bi-lo merger

Big news in the grocery world this morning as it was announced that Bi-Lo is buying Harveys, Sweetbay and Reids stores.  All three had been owned by the same holding company (who also still owns Food Lion).

This will bring 152 stores under new ownership across SC, GA and FL.  They are saying that all stores will continue to operate under their own names, however if this is like Bi-Lo’s most recent merger with Winn Dixie we will see the deals and coupon policies align to be very similar (some weeks the ads are almost identical).

My biggest question is how does this impact small Georgia towns that already have both a Harvey’s and a Bi-Lo??  Or South Florida towns that have Sweetbay and Winn Dixie?

I’m also curious to see what moves Publix will take to remain the largest southeastern grocer.

What are your thoughts?

This almost means that Publix is going to have to buy Harris Teeter.

i hope this means my local Harvey’s will get some upgrading it needs!

I don’t see it changing anything in NC. As long as fuel perks and double coupons stay the same. I did notice the other day, Bi-Lo is carrying Winn Dixie products.

I hope Publix buys HT. HT prices are outrageous.

    • missingwegmans

They need to go visit a Wegmans in NY and then model their store after them! I miss that store.

    • Jennifer

My town, Statesboro, has a Bi-Lo and 2 Harvey’s. Bi-Lo is my store!! I rarely shop Harvey’s. But, I would LOVE to see a Publix come in.

I hope they don’t change there coupon policy because reids here in west columbia doesn’t double coupons and won’t let you stack either.

      • Varn9899

don’t change I would want them to start doubling

    • snowdogmom

I just hope Publix does NOT buy Harris Teeter. We have the best of everything now with the competition between Harris Teeter, Publix and Bi-Lo. I still do best at Harris Teeter since we have SuperDoubles every Wednesday but do well at Publix too. Publix prices are not any cheaper than Harris Teeter on non sale items. We need competition or we all lose.

Actually this morning Ii emailed Publix to see if they had plans to come to my area. I live just north of Orangeburg SC. The only stores we have are BILO, Reids, and the Pig. The Pig is rightfully called so as it should be a grocery store in a third world country. You could probably smell the stinch from the parking lot if the wind blew right. FROM THE OPPOSITE OF THE PARKING LOT THAT IS. Then we have the stupids at Reids that think a Food Lion coupon is fraud if its printed from the website, apparently you have to bring in the website creator as well in order to use the coupon. OK dumbies why do you think you ACCEPT a Food Lion card?????????? And I’m pretty sure Bilo ONLY learned the coupon policy after I moved here and complained. How stupid can someone be to not know a coupon policy………….you stupid its posted right here in customer service…matter of fact, your stupidness walks past your own side daily. ……REALLY?…the reply….oh well I will have to call lost prevention.

I cant wait to see Publix’s reply. Its either I drive to Columbia (40 minutes) or I drive to Scummerville (an hour away) so there is no savings due to the cost of gas. I was one of the smart ones that bought a huge FRUCK that gets a whopping 16 mpg. And that also why its called a FRUCK…..

    • Varn9899

so what will happen in Batesburg-Leesville, SC where Bi-Lo and Reids are right next to each other

      • Connie

Same on my side of town in Aiken, SC

      • momof3

Are they still there? My favorite bilo just closed and became the Winn dixie across the street.

it is like when Kroger bought out ‘Great Scott’ many years ago in Michigan. I think it is the same thing.. man I miss ‘Great Scott’ grocery store…

Food Lion is owned by the same holding company as BI-LO?
That is very odd – I got a come-on from BI-LO today telling me if I bring them my Food Lion rewards card and get a new BI-LO card they will give me $1.00 per gallon towards gas.
If they are owned by the same holding company, why in the world would they do that?

      • Erin Ciferri

No Bilo bought Reids, Sweetbay and Harveys from the same company that owns Food Lion. Now Bilo owns those three stores and food Lion only own themselves:)

It would be great if Sweetbay started to double coupons to match the Bi-Lo policy… theirs might not be the greatest double coupon policy, but at the moment, there aren’t ANY stores that will double coupons near where I live in Florida.

I hope that this means that the BI-LO in Lexington, SC will get an undated store. They have good buys but I hate going in there. I am not encouraged if the same company who owns FL is buying BI-LO b/c all the FL are great when new but they don’t keep them up and they become dirty and not appealing to shop in. Plus FL’s prices are HIGH.

I am a little disappointed. I frequent Sweetbay when Publix issues gas card coupons to stock up on meat. The quality is better as are the prices. In my experience the chain isn’t very friendly coupon wise however. As long as I keep it simple I have no problem. Mind you it is always a fiasco at the register. You would think if a store is going to accept competitor coupons, they might create a way for their registers to accept them. I must say though if they take on the BiLo name with the same coupon policy, I will be excited, but, considering the few changes I’ve seen at Winn Dixie, I’m not getting my hopes up.

I can’t see the government letting one organization own all these grocery stores so that they can monopolize the food chain business. If they control the price of food then they can set any price that they want to and expect us to pay the price or starve to death. You can’t go to another store, because they own that one too. It’s all about the money. This company that owns Harveys also owns Food Lion, Reids, Bottom dollar, and Blooms and I know that when they bought out all these stores they started closing some down and changing names on stores that they kept using. Like in Florida those Food Lion stores changed to Harveys and here in Georgia the ones that remained the same went up on their prices and the stores went down in service. Most of the stores went to hiring part timers so they wouldn’t have to pay for insurance on them. It’s not one person that are buying these stores but several people pooling their resources to use as a tax write off. The people who are selling Harveys and such didn’t keep this company more than a few years and now they want to sell. It’s all about THE MONEY!!!!!
