bi-lo merger

Big news in the grocery world this morning as it was announced that Bi-Lo is buying Harveys, Sweetbay and Reids stores.  All three had been owned by the same holding company (who also still owns Food Lion).

This will bring 152 stores under new ownership across SC, GA and FL.  They are saying that all stores will continue to operate under their own names, however if this is like Bi-Lo’s most recent merger with Winn Dixie we will see the deals and coupon policies align to be very similar (some weeks the ads are almost identical).

My biggest question is how does this impact small Georgia towns that already have both a Harvey’s and a Bi-Lo??  Or South Florida towns that have Sweetbay and Winn Dixie?

I’m also curious to see what moves Publix will take to remain the largest southeastern grocer.

What are your thoughts?
