The Mystery Penny Item at Publix for Sunday & Monday, 9/13- 9/14, is:

Publix Vanilla Wafers

This is the top penny item and many stores will automatically substitute the item. If your still has this in stock and you want the “real” item then just ask and they will honor it.

You can get the Publix Penny item with any purchase that is $10 or more before coupons. There is a Mystery Penny Item coupon in the Publix Sunday Ad every week or somewhere in the Sunday Paper. Some stores do not require this coupon, but many have changed and do require it now, check with your store to find their policy.

**If your store has substituted something else but still has this item in stock you can ask to get the corporate decided item and most stores will let you**

    • My store offered this item a couple of weeks ago, really hoping that I go in today and they have substituted something else :)

    • It seems like Publix is really cracking down on coupons. At my store in Lexington they want the coupons BEFORE the groceries. The cashier then tries to sift through them as she rings stuff up. This is irritating because they have missed coupons and even handed them back to me for items that legitimately should have been able to use a coupon on. Has anyone else noticed this? I’m taking my receipt back in there this week to get my $1 coupon honored.

    • Hi Everyone:
I live between Montgomery, AL and Birmingham, AL. The Bham paper has better coupons but I can’t find the Publix penny item coupon. Is it hidden somewhere in the paper? The Montgomery paper always has a seperate Publix instert that has the penny item coupon.

    • The Smyrna Publix does indeed have vanilla wafers as the penny item — I see banana pudding in my future.

    • Sarah Smith

I was just in the Publix in Lexington on Sunset Blvd. and noticed they have about 15 cans of the Good Start Soy Formula in the clearance section marked 2 for $10. Food Lion has a coupon right now for $3.00 off any GoodStart Formula. That would make each can only $2!!!!! Great deal on formula for anybody who uses the GoodStart Soy.

    • The Athens, AL Publix has Country Time Lemonade Canisters as their substitute penny item. They are located in a bin at the front of the store this time, near the Customer Service Desk. Also located there are the new coupon booklets—“One Stop, One Store.” They have other booklets behind the customer service desk as well. Just ask for them!

Thanks Lara…my husband is on his way up to that store! I am sick so I am sending him out for my penny item!

Not all Birmingham papers get the publix ads and penny item coupons. I live about 15 minutes from Publix but do not get publix coupons or ads in my paper ever. I have complained and complained. Luckily my publix has the penny item coupon in the store already cut out.

Reason # 572 why I love Jenny: my $.31 shopping trip. Yes, that is THIRTY-ONE CENTS. Wahoo!

Here’s what I got for ONLY 31 cents:

1 box of Kashi cereal (free with vocalpoint coupon)
2 Newman’s Own Pasta sauce ($.70 total with coupons)
      Publix Vanilla Wafers (1 penny)
4 Dannon Yogurt 6 packs (rainchecks and coupons made these around 25 cents I believe)
3 bags Friskie’s cat food (rainchecks and coupons made these free)

Then I had gotten a coupon from Bi-Lo to save $2.00 on my next order it is a Catalina manufacturer coupon for buying Terriyaki sauce so once that was subtracted I paid $.31.

I am so happy and my husband almost hit the floor when I told him. My kitty is also going to be happy to see that I got her favorite cat food. :-)

Thank you X a million Jenny for all that you do. I appreciate you every single day.

I live in Prattville and I didn’t get a Publix ad in my Bham paper either!

    • Teresa

Jill – there is a new (in the last few weeks) checker that is really suspicious of coupons! I try to avoid her. She won’t ring a single item up until sorting through my coupons and laying them out on her station. Not only does she make me feel like a criminal but also anyone else in line will get annoyed because it takes so long! Most of the others are ok about them.

By the way, Welch’s Grape Jam or Jelly at Lexington Publix today.

    • Jessi

The Publix on Highway 70 in Bellevue is subbing Glass Plus cleaner for the Penny Item. There is a coupon from the Tennessean for $.50 off a Glass Plus item.(sorry, I don’t know what week or if it was RP or SS.) Use it to give you $.99 overage. I was so excited!

    • Anne Marie

GRRRRR! I got home tonight without my penny item. They had the publix vanilla wafers and charged me for it, but didn’t put it in my bag! I was so busy making sure that all my coupons scanned that I didn’t pay attention! Oh well, I have to go back tomorrow and try to get the All detergent that they were out of and the bagels, but it’s just a pain!

    • Teresa and Jill, yesterday I heard Jenny do a seminar and she was saying that the Publix computer system doesn’t have a way of matching coupons to items, so the cashiers are trained to match them when they ring you up. I’m sure is is really a hassle but they are just trying to make sure that you’re using the right coupons (which I’m sure you are!). Just thought I’d share; they may not be trying to be overly annoying, just trying to do their job as they have been trained.

    • J

The Publix on Rosewood in Columbia is offering Campbell’s soup as the penny item. HTH.

    • Ann

I agree about the Publix cashiers being overly cautious. I understand that they have to match the items with the coupons but today I found he didn’t even ring up two of my dollar coupons because it was taking him too long to match them up! It happened so fast but when I got to the car I realized that I was missing $2 in coupons and what can I do about it? He kept the coupons! I suppose the thing to do is buy fewer items at a time so I can keep up with it but when I’m able to shop on Sundays without chidren to help me :) I try to do it all at once.

    • Ln

I was in Publix today in Trussville and the lady at customer service said that they were not requiring the penny item coupon anymore because the only way to get it was through the Sun. paper and some people don’t get the paper or the Publix ad doesn’t come in the paper they do get because they live too far away to receive it. She said a lot of people complained it wasn’t fair to either have to buy the paper to get the coupon or the paper delivered to them doesn’t carry the Publix ad and so she said corporate said that they’re right that it wasn’t fair and now it’s not required. Just thought those of you where it is still required might like to know this.

    • BMe

Am I the only one that thinks the Publix Vanilla wafers taste awful?
I usually love vanilla wafers. I’m also not real impressed by the taste of their ice cream. That’s the only two things of the store brand that I’ve tried… because I havent’ been impressed so far.

I had this happen to me too a few weeks ago. The cashier didn’t scan 6 of my coupons (amounting to $6.50!) and didn’t say a word to me about not accepting them, just put them away. I was with my 2 y/o and thought my $24 total seemed higher than expected, but paid and looked over my receipt when I got home. I wrote a letter to the manager, enclosed a copy of my receipt and a list of the coupons I gave and a list of coupons scanned (which was hard b/c I had several $1 m/f). I asked for a check or gift card for the amount of coupons, and the store did even better…sent me $6.50 in cash AND a $20 gift card for the inconvenience! I was really annoyed with the cashier…most of the 6 coupons were from the advantage buy ad and made several of my items free or almost free for charity, which I wouldn’t have otherwise purchased (the Pert Plus & Sure for Men). She had no problem telling me at the beginning that they weren’t accepting Rite Aid $5 off/$25 anymore, so I don’t know why she didn’t take my other coupons or tell me why she wasn’t taking them.

I too live in between MGM and BHM, and I receive the BHM news. I have never received the Publix ad w/ the penny coupon in my paper but the store clerks are always very nice and ring it up for me at $0.01 anyway. They tell me that a lot of people don’t get it in the paper. The only grocery store ad I ever receive is the Piggly Wiggly ad in my mailbox. I never get the Rite Aide in my paper either so I just follow this wonderful website and pick my ad up in the store when I go.

    • Victoria

As for the penny item – when I do not have the coupon from the paper I have gone to the Customer Service desk several times and asked for a penny item coupon and they have always just given me one. Maybe that will work in your stores!

    • Sara

I am a customer service staff at Publix in S.C. We are getting more picky about coupons because people come in and have coupons that don’t go with their items. As much as I love saving money and other people to save money, it is a bit ridiculous when people come in with over fifty dollars worth of groceries and only pay five dollars. Remember, our company gets no reimbursement for Publix coupons or Competitor coupons. This is hurting our company, in turn it is hurting the employees. As far as asking for the coupon for the penny item, yes we need it. Usually we don’t ask for it but our corporate office is cracking down on us.

    • Heidi

Hwy 5 Publix in Douglasville has Glass Plus for their penny item!!!

    • scqponmom

Funny thing happened tonight. I picked up the vanilla wafers got to the register and was told they changed the item to the Motts apple juice. Paid for 2 seperate transaction and the manager comes over and tell the cashier that the .01 item is now the Minute Maid Juice Coolers drinks (10 pack). They let me exchange my apple juice. I love Publix!!!

    • Kristi

Thanks Heidi for telling me about this awesome sight! loves :o)
