If you have freezer space, using it to store certain items can save you a lot of money in the long run. We all know about buying half a cow and putting it in the freezer, but I’m talking about other foods and ingredients you may use regularly that will last much longer if you put them in the freezer. And in some cases, no thawing is even required before using them! This is great because if you find marked down food at the store, it’s possible you can put it in the freezer, even if the expiration date is coming up. Here are 15 foods you can buy in bulk and freeze.

15 Foods You Can Buy in Bulk and Freeze

Yeast

Yeast will stop working as time goes on, but keeping it in the freezer helps it retain its potency. And I’ve never had any issues using the yeast straight out of the freezer when making bread!

Any kind of flour

All flour can be kept in the freezer. All-purpose flour has a long shelf life so it might not be necessary to freeze it, but things like almond flour, oat flour, or whole wheat flour will last much longer if you freeze them. I recently found multiple bags of oat flour in the Kroger markdown section and just came home and threw them all in the freezer!

Coffee

If you find coffee on sale, whether whole bean or ground, you can freeze it! And you can put ground coffee right into the pot from the freezer.

Chocolate chips

No pantry would be complete without chocolate chips. If I find them on sale, I put them in the freezer to save for holiday baking. They can be put into things frozen, of course, but they don’t take long to thaw.

Rotisserie chicken

I don’t usually put rotisserie chickens in the freezer whole, but you can remove all the meat from the bones, shred it, and freeze that for easy cooked chicken for future recipes.

Cheese

Cheese can be frozen in blocks or shredded. If you freeze it in blocks, it won’t shred as cleanly, but if you’re using it for something else, it will be fine.

Bacon

Bacon often goes on sale and I buy as much as I can and stick it in the freezer.

Shredded coconut

I go through periods of making energy bites or homemade granola bars and use lots of coconut. But I always put the extra in the freezer so it doesn’t go bad!

Deli meat

This often goes on sale but won’t last forever in the fridge. Buy some extra packages and save them for future sandwich making!

Berries

Sometimes berries go on clearance toward the end of their life, but you can flash freeze them and use them in baked goods and smoothies!

Butter

Butter lasts forever in the freezer. I buy it in sale and save it for holiday cooking.

Pasta sauce

Pasta sauce in jars from the store often goes on sale. You may not be able to put the jar directly in the freezer because you need to make sure there is room for the sauce to expand. Transfer it to your own glass jars before freezing.

Bread

If I know we’ll eat it in the next few weeks, I just put it right in the freezer as I buy it from the store. If you want it to stay good for longer without getting freezer burn, you might want to put it in a freezer bag.

Tortillas

I also throw tortillas in the freezer in the bag I buy them in, but you can also put them in a freezer bag.

Nuts

I find tons of nuts on the clearance shelf at the grocery store, and while they won’t go bad soon, I find keeping them in the freezer to be a good option!
