Announcing Something New

on 10.7.2010 at 4:54pm

This post may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure here.

I’m so excited to share with you something new that we are going to do for the next 6 weeks.  I’m teaming up with Operation Christmas Child to help spread the message of the joy provided by Christmas Child boxes and to help you find awesome deals to pack some amazing boxes.

Over the next few weeks we’ll have posts on how to pack boxes, hear from kids who have received boxes, take a tour of one the packing facilities, and visit some drop off sites.  My goal is that you won’t be able to prepare for Christmas without thinking about these kids who would love to have a small piece of that Christmas joy.

Two New Southern Savers Features::

  • For the next 6 weeks grocery and store lists will have a new icon next to deals that would be awesome to put in a shoebox.
  • A new special deal round up list — “Great Deals That Make For Great Donations”.

Whether you use these for Operation Christmas Child boxes or to donate to local groups, I think you’ll find it will make the Christmas Season all the more fun.

What is Operation Christmas Child::

This is a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse to help children all over the world experience the joy of receiving a gift and to share the love of Christ with them.  They have shipped over 77 million boxes in the past and this year they are hoping for record 2010 numbers!

I encourage you to watch this video (though it makes me cry so bring tissues). Can’t see it? go here.

If you want a glimpse at the joy of these boxes, watch this.

Stay tuned this is going to get even more fun for you guys starting next week!!

    • Kaybender

I’m very excited that you will be doing this…..we have a family at church who will be paying for 100 boxes to be sent and I was wondering where I would find enough items to fill that many (we only did 42 last year)!
Thanks for spreading the word about a great program :) And the tear-jerker for me was “The Lejla Anderson Story” I cry every time I watch it!

This is awesome Jenny. I truly love how much you encourage your readers to bless others and not be selfish with the good deals we get. Thank you for your amazing work!!

    • Catherine

What a wonderful idea Jenny! God bless you!

    • Chattypatty247

Thank you for doing this. Our church is also collecting boxes and we were talking just last night about what to put in them. I can't wait to get my son involved with helping to fill ours.

    • Sheri C

Thanks for doing this Jenny. I know these kids love receiving the shoe boxes. Our family has been doing them for years.

    • Sarah

This is great! We put together a box every year and this will help make it easier…maybe we can even make more than one this year! Thanks for doing this Jenny!

    • Teach

Thanks! What a great idea! I have been saving my little Walgreens freebie lip balms & things like that, and I stocked up on school supplies back in August. I was hoping to find some more neat little things to put in my boxes!

    • Jeremyandjesse

I've always loved this site, but love it even more now! What an awesome ministry to be involved in!

    • Caity

Thanks Jenny! My husband and I were just saying we'd like to do this and now we'll probably be able to afford to do more boxes with your help over the next few weeks!

    • I just picked up 24 boxes off of recycle web site in my local area just for this at my church. And i have lots of Chap stick to put in them and other items from other sales.
how wonderful it is to share.

    • ChrissyKSaves

Thank you Jenny. Your site is a blessing to all of us as you help us to get “deals and steals”, and it is so wonderful to see that your heart is full of giving. Thank you for reminding, encouraging, and enabling us to give back. I am excited to partner with you in this because God blesses us so that we will BE a blessing. May God bless you!

    • Xjelrod01

where will we drop off the shoe boxes once packed? I'm in the charleston area

      • Sherry Mcfaden

Go here to find the closest drop off location and hours. National Collection Week is Nov 15-22. You can drop you box off then.

      • Krowland

visit http://www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php/OCC/Drop_Off_Locations_2010 to find your closest drop-off location

      • Karen

You can call one of the local Baptist Churches in your area and find out where you can drop off your shoe boxes. Or you can call The Charleston Baptist Association and they may be able to tell you where you can drop them off.

      • Caity

Charleston Baptist Church near the Citadel Mall will take them :)

      • Terjas

There are several locations in the Charleston area. Charleston Baptist Church is a Collection/Relay Center, Fort Johnson on James Island is a relay center and Hibben United Methodist is a relay center in Mt. Pleasant. We are sooo excited that Jenny has posted this on here. Also, Moe’s West Ashley is having an Operation Christmas Child day this coming Sunday as well as the 2 Moe’s in Mt Pleasant. Moes will be contributing to the shipping cost of the boxes. Come out and support Moe’s as they support Operation Christmas Child. Chick fil a will have a day on Nov 10th

    • Bev

I'm so excited that you're doing this! I would love to find deals to put in it. I wish we were organized enough to have everyone grab separate deals in bulk and then send them to someone who could put all of our couponing deals together into boxes–that way everything gets spread out evenly. Of course, then we might also end up with 200 chap sticks and no crayons. Ha ha! But I'm excited you're doing this–it will be great to have more folks get involved in putting together shoe boxes. A lot of local organizations and Chick-fil-As are drop-off points around this time of year. It might be nice to have that info handy too. Thanks!

    • Kristin

Great idea- I'm in for a shoebox or two!

    • Stephanie

Wonderful idea! We have been doing this for a couple of years now and would love help finding good deals to fill more boxes.

    • Tina

Yay! What a great idea. We love doing shoeboxes each year. My 4 1/2 year old talks about it all year long.

    • Hendersonzoo

We have been doing Operation Christmas Child boxes for several years. It is a blessing to these children and our children have a great time finding just the right things to include. The year we got a note back from a child who received a box was the best ever!!!

    • Brandi

This is great! We love doing these through our church!!! God bless you Jenni!

    • Lauren

This is a great idea! We've been doing these boxes for a few years but would love some ideas on how to save a few dollars!

    • Loueffie

Count me in! Love this idea and am excited to get my 3 year old involved in putting some boxes together. Thanks Jenny!

    • Hosselton621

Thanks s much for doing this! Our church has been doing OCC for several years, and the kids who receive these boxes are so thrilled. If you pay your shippng online, you will receive an email notification about where your box was delivered.

    • Judy Chatt

Awesome idea!!! The first yr. I started couponing my family packed 10 shoeboxes almost for FREE. The next yr. we did 12! I can't wait to see what we can pull off this year. I keep a tub in a closet and throw stuff in it all year. Everytime I get a FREE sample of toothpaste, it goes right in the box. I always hit up clearance holiday items b/c it's cheaper than buying stuff at the dollar store. I even add things like washcloths (that I've gotten in packs on clearance at Target) and spoons.

    • Susan

Jenny – This is the best. Thank you for showing us how to put our savings to good use for others. May God bless you and your family.

    • Amber

You can check and see if there is a local program for you too! I know Chattanooga has a program like this for the homeless….it's great to get things like kids gloves and hats for .50 and ad in there, and then the travel sized Tide is great too (and free with coupons!) so that they can hand wash their clothing items!

    • Kb

      So EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!!!!

    • Annette

THANK YOU, AMBER!!!! Not all of us want to participate in a sectarian/religious project. As you say, there are many other non-profit agencies (local, national, amd international) who are doing holiday drives, as well – and who need our support.

Please, Jenny – I respect your right to your expression of faith, but this website is not an appropriate venue – especially when not all of your readers are Christian.

      • These new lists will be great for everyone to realize how easy it is to give to whatever venue you choose.

        • Annette

Yes, they would be – but then please SAY that! Either do a “generic” suggestion (“here are some suggestions for items that many charities would welcome for their holiday drives”) OR provide some options as to worthy charities – secular (shelters, hospital pediatric wards, nursing homes – as well as Christian/religious organizations.

          • Heidischk

Annette, you sound like the Grinch. Don't nitpick on her choice of words.

            • SFLS

And Annette, you sound like the stereo-typical judgemental, mean, bullying Xian. WWJD, Annette? You know Jesus didn’t celebrate Xmas.

            • sss

Sorry – NOT Annette but to Heidischk and her followers that like her.

          • Kristen

all i can say is WOW!! whether or not a generic” suggestion is posted, the reality is that jenny is trying to good for those in need and that should be the main point.

      • 3monkeysmom

If you don't wish to participate in a “religous” project, then don't :-)

But since this is Jenny's site, she is free to say and post whatever she likes.

Just like you can turn the radio or tv off if you don't like something, you can ignore this post or better yet, just give to the charity you feel comfortable giving to :-)

        • 3monkeysmom

And considering that CHRISTmas celebrates the birth of Christ, then a Christian charity seems pretty appropriate to me :)

    • Gregsmom2005

Thanks!!! I've already been trying to look so I can hopefully do more boxes!! :)

    • Christyrolison

      awesome!!!!!! Thank you!!!

    • Amy

I'm so excited about the “enhanced” lists you will provide – I always forget to look for deals for the shoe boxes until it's too late. This will be great!

    • Rita

I've done these through Chick-fil-A in the past so if you're not familiar with a church in your area that's involved you might want to call or visit your local Chick-fil-A for boxes and collection details. – God Bless all who want to bring joy to a child at Christmastime.

    • Brandisheidler

we have been doing this for 8 years and LOVE it!

    • Abrooke8

So excited! I love Operation Christmas Child and I can't wait to see the deals.

    • Annachis07

This is so awesome!! My MOPS group is going to do a bunch of boxes and I've been trying to keep my eye out for good deals to fill them. Thanks for all your effort!!!

    • Pdudeck

I already started doing this a few weeks ago. Last year I worked at the Charlotte processing center, and I plan to do it again this year. There were so many broken plastic shoe boxes last year. I always thought they would be great (reusable), but at least 1/3 of them had to be repacked into regular shoe boxes at the shoe box hospital. Try to use regular shoe boxes if you can. : )

      • Occmom

The main reason that the plastic shoeboxes were broken was they were of lower value and sometimes the way they are packed into the cartons they get broken. The plastic boxes are great for the kids because they can use them after the gift. Just purchase higher quality and you will be fine.

    • Nookiesix

i was just wondering how can you sign a child up for this. i have seven children ,and am not working could really use some help this christmas.

      • Sandra

These boxes are sent overseas to different countries to children who truly have nothing. We usually fill them with small toys, personal hygiene products, candy, socks etc. This program is run by Franklin Graham and the sender has to include money to help with the shipping. HTH

      • paigejade

Get in contact with your local United way. They will help you out or get you in contact with someone who can. Blessings.

      • Deb

I'd suggest contacting one of the larger churches in your area (just call the number listed for the office) and asking if they can direct you. They'll likely have their own program and, if not, will know who you should talk to. My church does its own private version of an Angel Tree & all recipients are nonmembers. It's not the shoebox program, but it should provide some smiles for your kids come Christmas season.

      • Occmom

Operation Christmas Child is an international ministry , so they send all of their boxes to children overseas. But I'm sure there are lots of churches or agencies in your area that can help you.

    • Laura

This is awesome! I've been doing these for years and accumulate stuff all year long to supply these boxes!

    • Emhcoupon

Jenny, I think this is a wonderful idea to use your gifts to serve. I encourage you with Ephesians 6:7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, 2Tim 3:12 Everyone who wants to live a Godly life in Christ will be persecuted, Matthew 5:10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

    • Casail

My Daughters and I do this every year! I have shoeboxes on my counter already. We usually do one box for each of my girls and they pick the age and sex themselves. We put things in as we get them when we are out and about! We drop ours off at our local Lifeway Christian Store! Thanks for spreading the word!

    • Hhill67

This is a blessing to have a list. We do shoeboxes every year and now you have organized it for us! Thanks for you servant heart!

    • Dbisho13

Thanks, Jenny! You just gave us another reason to coupon. So we may bless others the way god has blessed us. I just wanted to say to you a great big Thank You. I am a member of Charleston Baptist Church and this ministry is very dear to our hearts at my church. I know the Lord himself placed this on your heart and I am thankful. Keep up the good work and I am sure by now you know to let those hateful comments roll off your back but to encourage you I wanted to say WELL DONE and God will deal with the rest!

    • Mclann1

My children and i do this every year. It is a wonderful program that i am so thankful to be apart of… Thanks for helping out and making it excessable to all..

    • Ngubandgeek

Thank you so much! I want to do a box this year, but as a student living on loan money I was trying to figure out a good way to coupon and do this. Its awesome that you are going to help even more with this! Thanks!

    • Mhbuchanan97

Awesome! Our family participates every year and I have been using your site to stock up items for our shoe boxes! Looking forward to it!

    • Christyhnj

I'm so proud to see you doing this. It only takes one person to set things in motion. Just imagine how many people will get involved because you took the first step. Good luck and I can't wait to see all the goodies we can spread to those who truly need and appreciate it!!!

    • Laurie

We love Samaritan's Purse and do shoe boxes every year. I ALWAYS put stuff in there I've gotten for free, like toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc. What a great idea to make this a part of the website . . . we are blessed so we can be a blessing to others.

    • Amy W.

I am so excited to see this post. My church participates each year. This will be a great help to many preparing these shoeboxes. Thank you and God bless!

    • Snellmom

Yea!!!! Operation Christmas Child has a special place in our heart. We've been able to tour the Atlanta Packing Facility the last couple of years. So awesome. If you want another video showing the impact of these very simple gifts, go to YouTube and put in “Samaritan's Purse Christmas Shoeboxes in Papua New Guinea”. Video done by a family while they were working with Wycliffe in Papua New Guinea.

    • Shanvickery

Love it, Love it, Love it! Thank you, Jenny! Our family loves to pack a couple of shoeboxes a year. When our family went to Africa this summer on a 10 week mission trip, it was so cool for my daughter to see kids actually playing with toys they had received from a shoebox gift. It is an awesome ministry!

    • Pam-alabam

I don't know if they have statistics on this or not, but my guess is that more boxes are needed for older boys. Everyone I know does little kids or girls. When we were foster parents, social work tried to get sponsors for all foster kids for Christmas but older and teen boys were always last to get sponsored and sometimes a few didn't get sponsored. Older boys are a little tougher to do but they like presents as much as the younger ones.

      • Rachael

This is Rachael from Operation Christmas Child. Most boxes are packed for the 5-9 range. Yes, 10-14 age group boxes is much needed!

    • granjen

My family enjoys packing these Shoe boxes. I get things all year long to put in

them. My boxes are ready to fill now. But with the help from this site, I'll probably

be able to fill even more. Oh, what a joy it is to help others! My hope is that even

more people will get involved with this ministry because of you and this site.

    • Kristen

I am in Debary, fl so if anyone knows where i can drop them off please let me know!!

      • Angela

Not exactly debary, but we do them in Mothers of Preschoolers Group in Sanford/Lake Mary. We have some members from debary so maybe I can hook you up with one of them to get the boxes. You can reach me at bornawild@aol.com

Great idea, looking forward to your posts. We have been filling boxes for several years and our grandchildren really enjoy finding things for their box. With your help we'll be able to find even more things this year!!

    • mc

This is a wonderful thing our church First Baptist Church in Callahan Florida collects the boxes. It is a blessing to be able to sit and pack these with my boys they get to purchase things they would like and put in the shoebox for other boys to enjoy.

    • Susan W

This is awesome!!! Before my mother died, Samaritan's Purse was her most beloved charity and she always made shoeboxes at Christmas. This will be a wonderful way for me to stay connected to her through the love she had for spreading the Good News of Christ's love! THANK YOU!!!

    • Hazel

Thank you Jenny… My oldest son wanted to do this this year. We normally pick names of f of our local tree. but, the other day at church they had the boxes. He is really excited about this and I am excited that I will be able to get some great bargains to fill the box. Thank you for all that you do.

    • Hannah7504

This is so awesome!!!!! This is the best idea and a get way to give back to other kids.

    • angela

awesome. thanks for stepping up to do this for children around the world!! blessings, angela

    • harbinfamily

This site just gets better and better! Thank you so much for ALL you do!

      • MelRae

My thoughts exactly! I have been reading Jenny for almost 2 years now, and it just gets better all the time!

    • Sarah

That is awesome—we do this every year with our church, but having items marked in the store deals list will really help and may give me new ideas.

    • cmk

My son and I have particiapted in Operation Christmas Child for the past 12 years (since he was 2). Though I've already purchased most of the items to fill the 3 boxes we'll send this year, I'm pleased to know you'll be pointing out items that are ideal for this project!

    • Paigejade

Yeah you! We do at least one of these a year. With deal rememinders I should be able to do a couple at least! Thank you! What a blessing.

    • Scqponqueen

My church just collected boxes for OCC. We still have a few to pack but our goal was 1000 boxes and at last count, we gathered about 600. Not too bad for a church that is not very big. Jenny, thanks for posting our project on FB a while back. We actually did have a few things dropped off. I'm not sure if they were because of your post or not, but it was a huge blessing either way. This is an AWESOME thing to do. We were blessed a whole lot more than those kids will be by being able to do it. I highly encourage all of you to take part in this. And Jenny, if they need a drop off site in Simpsonville SC, I'm SURE my church would be a willing partner. We still have the 600 we packed there, and would LOVE to get a few more to be able to take. Thanks for doing this.

    • Molly70208

This is awesome!! We do this with our church. I have also seen this in action while I was in Peace Corps in Nicaragua!!! So excited to put our savings into these gifts so that we can give more!! Thanks, Jenny!

    • KNM

Thanks Jenny – can't wait to participate :)

    • Csgoff

This is a great program!!! I have participated in it several times. Had a Girl Scout troop do boxes as a services project a few times as well! Great things!

    • Jsduncan52

WE are having our Kick Off Day for Gordon County at Trinity Baptist Church in Calhoun on Saturday Oct 9 2-4……. Our church is the collection senter for surrounding counties. It is great to be involved with the wonderful works of OCC!

    • Mandy

This is awesome Jenny! Thanks for doing it.

    • Wendy R

Thank you for sharing this (and even making it affordable). This post came on the perfect night. My family have never done this project and I think it a perfect way to teach my children how to give and not only think of themselves.

    • Jenn S

      I LOVE this idea! Thanks!

    • atmwm

My daughter and I participated in Operation Christmas Child last year for the first time. We had so much fun picking items that another child would enjoy. Our church is just getting ready to begin our program for this year. I am so excited to see your suggestions for us to use this year. Thank you so much!!!

    • Mndyeelain

I am in Alabama, (birmingham), and if anyone can tell me of programs to register my child for recieving help with Christmas, I would be grateful.

    • Kellycoury

I love this program!!!!!!!! I look forward to reading more about it here!

    • Shelley

Awesome! We do this every year but this will definitely make it more fun!

    • Ppostle

Our church in Summerville SC is the local collections center for the Low country, what a great joy to help with this each year!

    • Things like this are another reason we love you site! Thanks so much!

    • Shelby

My Mother and I have done this every year and now that she is gone I will carry on the tradition with my kids. I love the Christmas season and spreading cheer is an awesome feeling.

    • hjafl

Jenny, this is fantastic! Thank you for using your site and influence this way. I'm impressed.

    • Amandacottrell

So excited about this, Jenny! My husband works at OCC and this ministry is a huge part of our hearts. I love your blog and have shared it with so many friends because of the great impact you have on our lives in more ways than just saving money. Your efforts and strategies allow us more ways to give to others and share more time with our families. I love to see two things that I love come together in a wonderful partnership!

      • OCC Rachael

    • Jnberryhill

I LOVE this! You are awesome. Just read an article in our paper this afternoon (and I never read our paper) reporting on a recent presentation made by a young woman who emigrated from an Eastern European country – she had received a shoebox as a child and she said it made all the difference in the world. She had an abusive father and a debilitating illness and the box brought color and encouragement to an otherwise dismal life. I'm going to share this with my small group (they are all fans of your site!) and see what we can pull together over the next six weeks!

    • Corrine

We have done OCC for many years now not having any children. Now that I have a 6 month old son I am even more excited about it as I look to the future this is something I will be able to share with my son and teach him about what a blessing we can be to other children in need.

    • Momsdword1

Our family has done this in the past and thoroughly felt blessed by our efforts. I would love to get my granddaughter involved in “giving” this year. Thank you for all the many ways you share your goodness on your website. I look forward to all the info for filling the shoe boxes.

    • Allison

My two oldest children are adopted from Russia and when we were there in in 2001 they were talking about an orphanage that got shoeboxes and how excited the kids were. These kids literally have nothing of their own. All clothes are community items, even underwear, at this particular orphanage and this was the first, and maybe only, thing they ever recevied that was just for them. Now we pack a bunch of boxes but we let our 3 children pack one specifically for kids their age/sex. It is very personal for them to know that someone just like them is getting a special gift. Also, our church is a major hub and we do a lot of work with this organization and I have heard several times that they do need more older kids, especially boy, boxes.

      • OCC Rachael

        Hey Allison,
This is Rachael from Operation Christmas Child! Your story has blessed my heart and a true testimony of God's faithfulness. I'd love to hear more of your story!

    • Kensgirl91

This is a great program. Have sent several shoe boxes.

    • Radkbell

Awesome! So glad you are doing this. It will definitely make getting our shoeboxes ready easier this year. Thanks!

    • Phillips

My brother and sister-in-law went down to Carolina last year (we're from upstate NY) and helped in the packing facility and met Franklin Graham. They said it was an incredible experience. He heads up the Operation Christmas Child Drive at his church and personally packs 100 – 200 boxes each year. He gets the whole family involved. We get most of our stuff at garage sales all summer long, but since I started CVSing, I've found tons of stuff there to pack the boxes with too. Thanks for putting this on your site. You're right – I cried like a baby while watching the video. It really touched my heart. It sounds like many people are getting on board that have never heard of this program before. God Bless You :)

    • Sherry Mcfaden

Thanks, Jenny!!! This is just awesome. I coordinate OCC for Central Virginia as a volunteer and I can testify that these children are so grateful to receive these gifts. I went with OCC in 2009 to the Dominican Republic to pass out shoe boxes and the gifts are truly life changing for them.

Thank you for spreading the word! :)

    • Emily

I love this!! We did this when I was in high school and it was so rewarding. I'm planning on doing it again and also something from the Angel tree/kids stocking at our local mall. With all the free stuff I have, there is NO REASON NOT TO!!!

    • Oceanfan2001

Thank you for bringing remindig us that it is time to start planning. Somehow the time can get away from us. I had tears in my eyes even before reading your comment to bring the tisssues. My 10 year old daughter and I plan to do a few of them this year and look foward to your tips and suggestions. Thank you for all you do for everyone!! I can't go a day without checking your site!

    • Rachelle Bartlett

Awesome Jenny! Your the Best! Miss you at CBS!! Rachelle Bartlett

    • Jrenee

This will be my first year to pack my own shoe boxes. In the past, I have just donated money so that my church could fill more, but I decided I wanted to do my own this year. I have been collecting things since this summer to go in them, and I am so glad that you are going to help me finish filling them through your efforts here. Jenny, you are such a blessing to me and my family. I pray that the Lord will continue to use you in a mighty way.
      God bless!

    • Occmom

Thank you for doing this. I am a year round volunteer for Operation Christmas Child and I was so excited when i found out that one of my favorite blogs was going to be partnering with my favorite ministry. I know that many shoebox gifts or Gospel Opportunities as we call them will be going to the children of the world because of what you will be sharing on your site. thanks again!!

    • Bockstie

Fantastic! We do this each year and I've already been saving toothbrushes. I need your help finding the rest! What an awesome idea….thank you for all the hard work you put into helping my family save money. I pray you are blessed beyond belief for all you have done to help us!

    • Melissa

Thanks you for inspiring us to do something for others with all the good deals we score. I stocked up on school & art supplies a couple of months ago when there were so many freebies and bargains out there, knowing I could use them for my shoeboxes. Now, I have a nice collection of things that are going to make some children really happy. It's also a great way to get my own kids involved in helping others. They love to choose items to purchase, pack the boxes, and make cards for the kids they are going to. Thanks, again for spreading the word! What a fantastic ministry!

    • Sara

This is great and my children are ready to help! It's nice for them to think of others that don't have what they do. Especially at this time of year! Thanks for this opportunity!

    • Oliveplants

I'm so excited about this! Our family has participated in this for a couple of years, and I had already wondered how much I could get now that I am couponing. Now it will be even easier for me to figure out what to get!!!! Yay!!!! Thanks for all your hard work on this website, and sharing so many great tips and ideas! God Bless :)

    • amyt

What an awesome idea! One of the things I like so much about Southern Savers, is that you use your “platform” to do good works — and encourage others to participate in making the world a better place.
We did shoeboxes last year for the first time. It was easy, people! I was able to fill seven boxes with stuff from my stash. We did run to Target to grab a few toys, but that was it. Of course, I have been collecting toys already this year!
      Love Southern Savers!

    • Lbenjamin1349

LOVE that you are doing this!! Love this ministry :)

    • Laurenbayles

Love this. Was thinking last year around Christmas time how valuable this would be. Thanks!

    • polly77

Jenny thank you so much for sharing! Wonderful news! My family loves participating in operation Christmas Child. We get to share the good news of Christ while helping children in need. I highly recommend filling a shoebox, with our good fortunes from couponing there's no reason not to.

    • TMhardin

We have done these boxes for many years and my two girls really enjoy helping find things to put in the box for their child. We send them for girls that are their ages. I also stock up on school supply items and then look for other fun things that will fit into the box. Any inexpensive ideas that you can share would be greatly appreciated. Also, we usually pack our items in a plastic shoebox so the child will have a nice storage box to use too. Thanks for sharing about this ministry. Operation Christmas Child is such an easy thing to participate in, but it makes such a difference for the children who recieve the boxes around the world.

    • Cber

Thanks for leading us on a great mission, Jenny!
A dear friend/fellow couponer and I were just talking about this the other day. How much easier it will be this year to fill our shoeboxes, thanks to our new way of shopping.

    • Scchelle

Great idea, Jenny! I love participating in Operation Christmas Child because Samaritan's Purse really makes a difference in their lives sharing Christ's love with them. Thanks for the extra help this year!

We do this every year with our church and both of our children's schools. A couple of month's ago Franklin Graham spoke at our church and mentioned this as well. It is an awesome way to give. Just a quick idea for items is to save the crayons that your kids get at restaurants (unused) and things like Happy Meal toys. We also get the discounted back to school items (like crayons for .25 cents), pencils, sharpeners, etc.. and we save them in a basket until Christmas just for this purpose. I send a reminder during back to school to remind my friends to do the same.

    • Mslonas

I LOVE THIS!! Our church has been doing Operation Christmas Child for years now, and Im sooooo excited you thought to do this Jenny!! My 3 kids (ages 8, 5 and 2) have always done a shoebox for other children, and I try to encourage them to buy for children of their same sex/age so it feels like its a personalized gift from them…Im so happy to see what you have in store for the coming weeks regarding this WONDERFUL ministry!!

    • Amelvincare

I love OCC! Thanks for doing this and the great ideas for great deals for my shoebox.

    • carolinagal04

Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea, Jenny. :-) I'm excited about doing it this year, & even making it a family event. What a great way to show my daughter at such an early age of how to help others.

    • Nanicraig

Posting this on our blog if you dont mind, count me in!

    • Jenniferwinch76

awesome!! we do this every year!! my girls (ages 7 and 4 1/2) LOVE to pack these!!!

    • Alice

This is great and you be helping me lots. Usually by this time every year I already have at least 6 boxes ready but for some reason this year I am behind. Your post will be most helpful.

    • Lesliepholmes

so ridiculously happy you are doing this!!!

    • gayla_p

My 6 yo daughter and I did a box last year for a little girl and we throroughly enjoyed it. I paid the extra $7 to help with S&H and received an e-mail Christmas Eve that our box went to Zimbabwe. Not only was this a lesson in compassion and humanity but in geography as well.

We are doing 4 boxes this year and have been collecting things for them since last Christmas.

    • Jewels912

Thank you so much for doing this. What a great way to help others get involved!

    • Robandbrittany

What a PHENOMENAL idea. I'm so excited to see you guys doing this!!

    • Danielle

Thank you so much for this! I greatly appreciate this opportunity!

    • Thank you so much Jenny!!! I am so thankful that you are doing this. You are really doing God's work here…thank you for using your blog and your celebrity to help others.

    • Lorannclark

I have prepared shoe boxes for several years. It is really fun. Looking forward to preparing them even more cost efficiently.

      Thanks so much!!

    • Katie

Such a GREAT idea! Thanks for doing this, Jenny!! I am really excited to start filling up some shoe boxes!!

    • Epotate

What an awesome idea for an awesome ministry! We go every year to the warehouse in Atlanta to help sort & pack the boxes. It's like being in Santa's warehouse. I've also been fortunate enough to see a homemade video of some children in an orphanage that received the boxes. We take so much for granted!

This is truly a great idea to focus on.

    • Hope

Just wanted to add to your kudos, thanks so much for doing this, I'm really excited!

    • Dodge05mag

This Rocks!!! I love Operation Christmas Child! I stock up on things year but am looking forward to the new icons to see what deals you come up with for this! Thank you and God Bless you !!

    • Courtneyjo

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Our church teams up with them every year and packs the boxes. So excited to see others doing the same :)

    • I love this! I have participated in Operation Christmas Child in the past and it was so… indescribable. It is an amazing program. Placing the items in a box, saying a prayer for the child who will receive it, tucking in my favorite verse and sending it on its way touches my heart in a way that I just can't explain. I've been thinking about Operation Christmas Child all year and already have several things stored up and I can't wait to pack my boxes!

    • JulesV

What an EXCELLENT idea! I have done operation Christmas child for several years. It will you bring you as joy donating as it does the kids who get it I promise!!

    • Snowski824

I cry every time they play this video in church.

    • Lisa F

Jenny, I love love love that you are doing this to get the word out about Operation Christmas Child and to help people make a difference in the lives of children and their families. My husband and I haven't been able to have children of our own, so I especially get great joy shopping for and assembling these boxes each year.

    • zaxmom2008

I love this! I volunteered at the Charlotte distribution center last Christmas and it was an amazing experience. Packing boxes is a lot of fun, and its a great way to get your kids involved with charity too. Thanks for doing this…

    • Landdaaisy

Wow, I am so glad to see this. This is something we have done regularly in our home each Christmas and we have some wonderful letters and pictures from children around the world that have received the actual box our children have sent because we also included our address and a picture of us. Wonderful opportunity!

    • Elise

Thank you for doing this! This is one of my favorite ministries and I am so excited to see the news spreading!

    • Peggy

Jenny, I have been doing Operation Christmas Child for years. It would not be Christmas without this project. Years ago before I retired from teaching, my 8th graders and I did this through my school. One year we packed 588 boxes, a very special memory of my teaching career of 33 years. What an awesome project for Southern Savers! God bless you for doing this very meaningful task for these precious children!

    • BusyBee

This is AWESOME! Many years ago, I was on the receiving end of these Christmas boxes, so I can say I understand how excited these kids are! For the majority of them, this is the ONLY Christmas gift they will receive. It means so much! Now that I can be on the giving end of this, I am excited about Southern Savers helping with ideas, and deals… that way more kids can get boxes. This is a great ministry that touches many kids' lives. All glory, and honor, and praise be unto the Lord Jesus!

    • WynetteC

I couldn't be more excited! That is great that you're teaming with them! My daughter has stayed in touch with a girl who received my daughter's shoe box nearly 5 years ago. Such an amazing thing how God draws us all together in the bigger plan.

    • Deanna

I am soooo excited about this!! My church is very involved with this and I can't wait to start finding deals and filling boxes!!! You are awesome!

    • flower_mom

I heard of this last year but have never done it. Thanks Jenny on our future 'education' in filling a box! :)

    • Newmom2004

Jenny, I think this is great what you're doing. Our very small and new church is going to the packing facility in NC as a local mission trip and last year we did a community event so I am very excited to spread the deals with our members too!!! Thanks and God bless you!

    • RebeccaFer

I have been gathering things all year to put into shoeboxes for this awesome time of year. I have several boxes of Crayola crayons and index cards that were free after RR at Wags just as school started, a ton of small stuffies that my daughter gently used and will fit perfectly into boxes along with other odds and ends that I've been gathering. I can't wait to find more goodies to make up more boxes! This is going to be not only fun but so beautiful for all of us to do together. We have been so blessed by your guidance in getting for ourselves that it makes so much sense to be guided as well to how to give to others. God Bless you and yours Jenny! :D

    • Brandygrapper

absolutely perfect. thank you so much for doing this! now there's no excuse for me to get all these freebies to people who need them!

    • peyton88

How exciting! My daughter and I have made boxes for the past five or so years and we have a ball!! Great cause and very simple!

    • Tammy

This is AMAZING! How can you not want to be apart of this! I hope everyone does this to touch a life of a child!

    • TK

I have been couponing successfully for nearly two years now and have always loved how it allows me to give more to others. This is a wonderful new addition, Jenny!!!

    • Kdm

This is so perfect! I have already been planning to make a box or 2 with my coupon goodies and now you are going to help us even more! Thanks so much for doing this!

    • Carrie

Love it! I talk year round about OCC on my blog but I'm a small blog. I'm so glad you're doing this! So many people will learn more about OCC this way!

I do hope you also mention their catalog option. I purchased a flock of baby chicks for someone, somewhere last week. $14. That's one eating out. I can pack sandwiches!

    • Jaggreer

my box is already full from freebies and deals i have saved for this year. this will help me make a second box. Thanks for your generous spirit.

    • Sarah

Jenny, you ROCK! I hope that lots of people take this opportunity to share the blessings we have all been given!

    • beckystinson

We do this every year. Thank you Jenny for getting the word out and not being shy about your faith.

    • Amy L.

Awesome. Our boys prepare one for a child (3 boys = 3 boxes) and they really enjoy finding lots of things they would love to have – putting it in the box for someone they will never meet this side of Heaven!

    • Kpower-davis

Oh Jenny THANK YOU!! Our family has participated in this for years and I have been stockpiling the “free” and greatly discounted stuff for just such an occasion. I've already donated several boxes to single mothers in our community and never even thought about Samaritan's Purse. Again, THANK YOU for all the work that you do and for spreading the word. I'm hoping to start a donation box at my child's gymnastics school because that is where I learned all about Southern Savers and I bet working together, we could make a big difference.

    • Bryarsmom

      So cool!

Our church partners with Samaratin's Purse donating thousands of shoe boxes every year. Such a simple gift to us that means so MUCH to the kids.

    • Hannah050603

Jenny I thank you so much for sharing this with everyone. Donating boxes has become a tradition in our family. Last year, when I explained how it works to my 6 year old daughter, she was anxious to hope on board. She even cleared out her piggy bank to get another $7 and send off an extra box. We tracked where it went and learned a little about each country as well. So it became a lesson on giving and geography!

    • heather

I can't wait to see what is to come!! This is very exciting!

    • Very excited about this! I love packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child!

    • 4meggiemoo

      Can't wait!!

    • Malinda

This is such a wonderful ministry. I have already purchased my items for one shoebox this summer when Michael's was having a big sale but now I will be able to fill another box. YEA!

    • stephanie

So awesome. What a great idea. WE love packing shoe boxes for OCC at our house. Thanks for supporting such a great ministry.

    • Carmeng87

Awesome. My family and I would like to know how to get in touch with the packaging center in Charlotte so we can sign up to help pack, label, tape or any other function we can serve in this great cause!! Please foward a link for us. Thanks so such for this opportunity to share faith and happiness.

    • Kmd20ts

We used to do it then we moved and now I don't know where a drop off is. I also sponsor a world vision child and give to Heifer International!

      • Kanglin

The samaritan’s purse website allows you to put in your zip code to find locations for drop-off. Check it out – http://www.samaritanspurse.org

    • kcreviews

Every church I've ever attended has done OCC. It's a wonderful blessing for both child and giver. I've already almost finished my box but look forward to more ideas!

    • Melissa

This is a great idea!! Thank you for adding it to the site!

    • Barb

Great job!!!! It is so important to help others…….

    • SassySaver

I have been using my “couponing freebies” like toothbrushes and such to build up my stash for packing boxes with my boys. I am so excited that you are showing us that even those on a tight budget can afford to help others. This is such an amazing and worthwhile project.

    • Crystalmart5

I can't wait to be a part of this! I love that not only am I saving money for my family but now, since couponing I have been able to donate to those in need. It truely has been a blessing from God, and I must share and bless others with it.

    • Kim

I was privileged this past January to actually distribute the Occ shoe boxes on a mission trip to Mexico. Words can not even describe the joy that these children & big kids too felt when they received a box. A few things that we learned just from the trip: 1. they really like the plastic boxes it served a purpose for them later. 2. during the presentation of boxes they hear the story of Jesus, but they have no idea what Christmas is.
      3. Where we distributed boxes they had no clue what a bar of soap was. They use a powder (similar to washing powders to wash with).
      4. Toothbrushes and toothpaste didn't really understand that and they were very embarrassed by the underwear!
      5. They loved the sunglasses and hair bows etc.
There is so much more to tell, but hope this helps. God truly blessed me on this trip.

    • Uabmathgeek

This is such a neat ministry! It is so great to save money couponing, but so much better to be able to use that to give to people in need!

    • MamaChell

Wow! I'm so excited about this. Thanks so much for making it so easy! Regularly, there are great deals / even free deals for things that I don't need or use, and it gives me such great joy to be able to donate these items to someone who may need them. You're right, I DID need tissues to watch the video. Thanks so much for sharing that!

    • Donna

thank you Jenny for supporting OCC ! My family and I have packed shoe boxes for several years now ! My children LOVE IT ! Thank you for showing us great ways to give !!

    • AWESOME!! We packed boxes for OCC and I was looking forward to putting my SouthernSavers knowledge to use this year to pack even MORE boxes. Now you've made VERY EASY!

Thank you for all that you do!

    • Keisa

I'm SO happy that you are doing this! One of my best friend's husband does videography for Samartin's Purse. They are such a great organization!!!!

    • Mmleininger

I'm so glad that you are running this posting series!! I first heard about Christmas Boxes on another coupoing site about three months ago. I got inspired to do them this Christmas and I've been trying to collect items but I'm absolutely clueless about what would really be good in these boxes. Thank you so much for giving us more information. I really appreciate the extra effort!!!!

      • Keenapaige

Our church is the collection center for OCC in our area, so I’ve been packing shoe boxes for many years. I’m so glad you’ve heard about the ministry and are inspired to help this year. Here’s a website that provides more information on how to pack your box(es) and a list of suggested items to include. I hope it will help you. God bless! http://www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php/OCC/Pack_A_Shoe_Box/

    • Rstorey5

Thank you for running this post over the next couple weeks. We collect items thru out the year at the church then have a weekend that we gather and start to load boxes. We wrap some and then put some in plastic shoe boxes. We go to local shoe stores and ask for empty shoe boxes. We have one store that along with the boxes gives the church a large donation so we can add items to the box. My small county church of 115 members usually gets 200 plus boxes sent out.

    • Renee

My family has been doing this for the past three years through our church….Our kids enjoy picking items and carefully packing them as much as my husband and I do. We have a friendly competition going with another family on how many we do. Last year our “friendly competition” yielded over 50 boxes! I think in total, our church donated over 300 boxes…..Its such a wonderful feeling to know that I had a part in making something so profound happen for a child. Thanks for sharing.

    • Nora

Love this!! I make up boxes every Christmas & try to find deals throughout the year. This will help out a lot! Thanks Jenny!

    • One of the high points of my Holiday season is making the shoe boxes with my daughter. She's 17 this year and has grown up filling a box — first with older siblings, now on her own. I'm hoping we can take it up a notch this year and go work in a distribution center.

    • Donna

We have been packing these boxes for years, and it is always such a blessing. Last year, we tracked our box by going online and paying the $7 shipping fee. We use it as a geography lesson for my son. I just got a free flashlight with my coupon from the Harbor Freight store. I'm putting it in a shoebox. Now I just need some of those free batteries from Target. Thanks for doing this Jenny!

    • knc

Thanks so much! Love, love, love Operation Christmas Child. So much fun to put together as much as I can with all my freebies and inexpensive items. Thanks for your support of OCC!

    • Tmcalister

      Love Love Love this idea!!!!!

    • Joy

Thank you for adding this to your posts over the next few weeks. Our family saves toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, soap and other deals all year long, so we can make as many shoeboxes as possible. I'm always looking for deals and new ideas!!!!

    • Heather M.

We do this every year with the children in our 4-year-old Sunday School class and our daughter who is now six. We usually include a photo and our address and pray over the box before we send it. This year we actually got back a photo of the little boy who got one of our boxes. He was smiling from ear to ear with excitement…what a privilege it is to be able to give to a child in need! How exciting that you have partnered up with OCC and including this in your posts making it affordable for more people to get involved! Thanks so much!! I'm going to pass the word on my fb!

    • Joan

Thanks so much for doing this! We have participated for years, and we have received several letters back from the children who have received these gifts. We are still in contact with one girl who is now college-aged. Such a wonderful way to use our blessings to bless others around the world.

    • tori729

This is awesome and will be super-helpful for me!!;.

    • Collectorkelly

Thanks, jenny. We are going to Mexico on a mission trip in November. i cannot wait to get started on this mission, also. Thanks for helping us use God's money wisely!

    • Jessie

I love that you're doing this. Our family puts together shoeboxes for OCC every year. It's a great opportunity to teach our 4-year old about sharing God's love and thinking of others as better than ourselves. I have her choose something out of her treasure box to give to the kids instead of keeping for herself.

    • Our church packs these shoe boxes every year, gathering the needed items thoughout the year. Each year we try to increase the number of boxes. Usually we are able to obtain at least half of the number of boxes we intend to fill from our local collection spot as well as from regional. This year there are none available. That means that we will be attempting to gather actual shoe boxes and wrapping them in Christmas paper. The boxes from Operation Christmas Child are decorated on the box itself–no wrapping needed. This year we will be having a wrapping party.

It is such a blessing to gather with other church members and plan for this, working year round. Then we gather to put the items in them all at one time, then place them on the altar and pray over them on Sunday morning for the individual children who will be receiving them. Church members who want to participate but are unable to be at the meetings to work put together their own box/boxes at home and bring them in.

      • Melody

If you have a Cato in your area check with them for boxes. We get our boxes there and have some very dear ladies in our church that do most of the wrapping for us. Good luck!

    • Oh Jenny this is AWESOME!!! I have done two boxes every year since my senior year of high school. I love doing it and now that I have two girls of my own, its a tradition I love sharing with them. Thanks so much for adding the new feature!!! Hopefully I'll be able to do a BUNCH of boxes this year, thanks to you!!!

    • Charity

Awesome! We've been doing this for several years with our church and now that our kids are old enough to do it, they love it! I collect things throughout the year for the boxes and am looking forward to suggestions that you'll have for them!

    • Joanna

Thank you SO much for doing this! I love Operation Christmas Child, and what a blessing it will be to see it promoted on your sight over the coming weeks! God bless you!

    • Melody

OCC is my favorite mission. We have been working on boxes all year at my church. We started in January crocheting scarves and hats. We have been packing since summer and as of last Sunday we have 515 boxes. Praise God! We will be taking the youth again this year to Charlotte to work packing the crates to ship out to the children. THANK YOU for drawing attention to this ministry. OCC has been a tradition in my family since my children were little and they still look forward to it. Thanks again.

    • Sleepygirl09

I worked as a teacher at a small private school and had several students who had been adopted as older children from Russia. They told us how they had received boxes at the orphanges and what it meant to them. Now those sweet girls pack boxes and send them to others. This is truly a worthwhile project.

    • Jnomcafee

Jenny, This is a great idea. Thanks for sharing your heart for missions with all of us!! My family and I enjoy packing shoeboxes every year.

    • Clw2283

I have wanted to do this for a long time and the years just pass by. Thank you so much for doing this and showing us things to donate. I am so excited! Praise God for such a wonderful blessing!

    • proud grandmother

For the past three years, my granddaughter (9 years old) has requested the items suggested for these shoeboxes be her gifts for her birthday party. With the gifts from friends and using her birthday money, she has filled 12 or 13 boxes each year! She draws pictures to include in each box. Her grandfather has paid the $7.00 postage for each box.

    • Corb1232001

Love this idea. Thanks for caring!

    • glammyyams

awesome! i get sooo overwhelmed and bummed trying to get all these stinkin deals and it's all about me, me, me! BUT it's really great when someone or several ones can benefit from our savings! God does love a cheerful giver, let's not disappoint :)

    • Darla

Out of all the updates to your site I really like the “recent articles” on the right hand side of the page. It makes it soooo easy to refer back to a post on a deal and didn't have time to do right away. That was an awesome idea!

    • SFLS

Jenny, you know I love what you do AND this is one idea I can't support. With so many folks out of work in this country, shouldn't charity start at home? I don't support overseas ministries when we have so many folks hurting locally.

We support our local food bank and volunteer to serve T-Day dinner.

      • Many of the Operation Christmas Child boxes are in fact delivered in the United States to children in the foster care system or in poverty/domestic violence shelters. Just thought you should know that before you totally reject the idea…

        • Jodie

I ditto this! I have a niece and nephew who benefited from this very organization one Christmas when their family was in need. It was awesome and very personal for them. Please reconsider.

    • Kim

Jenny, I have to disagree with some on here. This is awesome! Many of us already support Operation Christmas Child, so making it easier for us to identify deals to support this will make us be able to share more this season with everyone!!!! Just because we support overseas missions doesn't mean we don't support anyone here at home. Jesus says minister to the nations. Keep up what you do Jenny! We all appreciate it! Thanks for thinking of those that already hold this cause near and dear to our heart!

    • gotta reaffirm all the positive comments below. . . as a local contact for occ, i'm so glad you're taking the time to show everyone how easy it is to give! thanks for all you do!

I’m not as dim-witted as you think. After converting to Christianity, the Emperor Constantine merged paganism and Christianity to either make conversion easier or to make peace among believers and non-believers.
Why does it matter when it was first celebrated in the US?
Whether or not pagans had a fish symbol has no bearing on what the fish symbol represents to us. I didn’t realize that the early pagans copyrighted the fish….. Please do more research about the significance of fish in God’s word :) As to your statement regarding the female anatomy: that’s pretty lewd and uncalled for and if you’re trying to ruffle feathers, go somewhere else!
And before you start in on other holidays, yes, I know that bunnies and eggs are fertility symbols.
Your use of X is not inappropriate, though others may think so. X, the greek letter Chi, is the first letter in ???????, translated :Christ :-) I would argue your use of it is to cause contention.
      God Bless :)

I love Operation Christmas Child! I have been filling boxes for many years. I was so thrilled that last year, I could pay the $7 postage per box online through the Operation Christmas Child website. I was able to print a special label, so my boxes could be tracked. I found out that my boxes were sent to India. Some of my family has done mission work in India, so this was extra special to me.

    • Awesome idea, Jenny! And we are starting collecting boxes at our local church here too! I'll be sure to send folks your way when looking for ideas! :)

What a wonderful idea! Thanks so much for helping us be a blessing while continuing to be good stewards of the blessing with which God has entrusted us!!

    • I was so inspired when you posted this, and then at church on Sunday there was an insert about Project Christmas Child in the bulletin. I will definitely be participating, and I am planning on writing about it on my own blog tomorrow. Thanks Jenny!

What a wonderful and inspiring idea!

Jenny, do you think you can keep the new icon beyond the 6-week period? Now I'm inspired to give to community but I'd like to continue throughout the year. The special icon makes easier for me to spot great items to donate.

Jenny, thank you for all you have been doing!

Yeserterday I went to Lifeway Christian Books on Capital Blvd. in Raleigh. The VBS shirts from Saddle Ridge Ranch were 90% off so that made them 94 cents each! We bought all they had for shoeboxes, but they may have the same deal at other Lifway stores.

Inspired, I have promoted 2 other people to do this with me and now I found a church that is doing it also. I will take my boxes there! Fun and made me feel good to give. :)

I dropped my boxes off yesterday at Chic-A-Filet. My son and I have being doing this for years. What a great way to put a smile on a child's face.
