I’ve run into so many people recently who do all their grocery shopping at Walmart. While Walmart does have the lowest prices on some house brands, if you are someone who prefers name brands, you are much better off shopping at a regular grocery stores that runs actual sales.
To prove this fact to you, we have started comparing prices at Publix vs. Walmart. I’m listing the Buy One Get One (BOGO) price at Publix as well as the same item at Walmart at the current price. If there is a comparable item under Walmart’s house brand, I’ve included that price as well, because going generic will sometimes be cheaper.
Why compare just sale prices?
The #1 comment I get on price comparisons is that it’s not “fair” to only compare the sale prices at Publix.
Our goal around here to ALWAYS save money on groceries, and the best way to do that is to shop sale prices. If it’s not on sale, your goal is to not buy it. Comparing full price items at Publix would be a silly waste of time because you shouldn’t be buying the full price items anyway!
Note: The Publix sale prices are from the Publix ad starting 2/4 or 2/5.
Comparing Prices at Publix vs. Walmart
Of the 15 items I’m comparing prices on today, Publix beat the name brand price at Walmart on every single item and beat the Walmart house brand on all 6 items that had a generic alternative.
Assuming you bought each of these deals you would have paid:
$38.74 at Publix
$64.77 at Walmart
If you are a name brand shopper and you decided to start shopping at Publix, you would save almost $26 dollars this week on these items! If you do that every week, you’d save almost $100 over the course of the month.
While buying the house brand at Walmart for each of these items may not be much more expensive, the truth is there aren’t perfect copycats of the name brand items for each of these. So if you are brand loyal, your best bet is definitely to shop the name brands at Publix!

There are no newspaper inserts expected this weekend, on 02/08, and no news yet as to when the next insert will be coming.
Hopefully they will continue coming on a monthly basis, but with more and more newspapers going to a digital-only format, it is hard to predict. And this has contributed to at least two of our insert preview list sources to shutting down, making this information even less available.
