Going Nuts? I can help you understand coupon terms and abbreviations

After taking a few weeks off from shopping, we went a little overboard this week.  I decided to grab deals at Publix, Bi-Lo and CVS.  Bi-Lo was our big trip and for the first time in ages we had so much it took two buggies!

This was also a week where my Sunday inserts paid for themselves.  Many times I feel like I use more printable coupons than insert coupons, but this week we used a lot of coupons from the past few weeks.

Lets start with the fun trip first…

CVS was mostly a run in for Cetaphil and contact solution, two things we need.  I decided to grab a couple other freebies and big deals while we were there.  I shared all the deals we grabbed in a Facebook live earlier this week.  You can watch it above.  Here’s our shopping list.

CVS Totals:
Total Purchase Value: $70.33
Total Spent: $1.33
ECB Remaining: $3
Ibotta App back: $2

Next up was a quick trip to Publix for a few things.  We stuck to just the BOGO deals and the free Centrum Vitamins.  I may have slipped a Publix sub into the buggy too cause a girl hitting three stores needs to eat.   Here’s the shopping list of what we bought.

Publix Totals:
Total Purchase Value: $70.55
Total Spent: $28.20
Total Saved: $42.35 or 60%
Mobile Apps back: $3.25

The big trip was Bi-Lo.  I stocked up on all things beans and was very thankful for all my inserts this week.  We grabbed chili beans, baked beans, grill’n beans, refried beans… you get the idea.  We also used the Target $5 off $25 pet care coupon from this weeks Target ad and grabbed a lot of kitty litter that we a donating to the animal shelter (that’s what my 9 year old wanted for her birthday instead of presents).  I was able to get 4 big containers of it for $12.98 which is the regular price of one!

One other fun deal to mention is money maker Pace Salsa!  They are BOGO and we have 55¢ coupons that double making them 39¢ a jar.  But… these are also included in the Publix $5 off (5) store coupon.  So if you have enough coupons, grab 5 of them and you get paid 60¢ a jar after the coupons!!

Bi-Lo Totals:
Total Purchase Value: $240.90
Total Spent: $81.70
Total Saved: $159.20 or 66%
Mobile apps back: $2

My budget is really only around $50 so we are a bit over for the week, but after not shopping for the past three weeks we are fine.

          How To Organize Coupons

          organizing coupons

How should I organize my coupons? This is a big question that I get, and a lot of people are surprised to hear that I don’t keep my coupons in a binder with baseball card dividers!

There are some really simple ways to organize them and some more complicated ways. Obviously the more complicated, the more time it will take.

You can try different methods to see what works best for you.

          How To Organize Coupons

File Folder Method – Keeping Your Insert Whole

This is the method I use because it’s easy and fast. When you get your weekly inserts write the date bigger on the front page of the insert.  Then, get a large 13 pocket accordion file system or use a filing system in your desk and put all the inserts from this week together in one pocket.  Next week put those inserts in the next pocket of the folder.

As the weeks go on you have all the inserts from each week together organized back by the date that they came out.  If you buy more than one paper, just put all the inserts no matter how many into the same pocket.  Now when you come to Southern Savers you will use the SS dates that are next to coupons on the weekly deal posts to find each coupon and cut it out before going to the store. (Example: PG 04/30)

I do not recommend this system to anyone that hates to miss a clearance or closeout deal in the store.  The upside to this system is that the only time spent on it, is the time you spend getting ready for your trip.  Usually takes me about 15 minutes to cut any coupons needed for a trip.

You will also need to have a smaller accordion file folder to store any coupons that you cut and don’t use or any printable coupons.

          Some Additional Tips:

Print the Regional Insert Coupon Variation list for your paper to quickly know what coupons you do and do not have.

-You will keep inserts for about 12 weeks. After that, you can clip the one or two coupons that haven’t expired and throw away the rest (or send them overseas to troops).  See a quick tip to see when things are expired and ready to be cleaned out.
