Are you planning on giving your kids an Easy Bake Oven this year? I’m sure they’re going to be thrilled (I know my girls will be), but what you may not know is how expensive it is to buy the refill packs. First of all, my Easy Bake Oven came with one chocolate chip cookie bites mix, which will allow my girls one baking session with their new oven. After that, I know they’re going to be wanting more things to bake. The Easy Bake Oven refills that you buy in the store are on average $7 and usually include two baking mixes. That’s $3.50 for each mix!
But there is good news for you: you don’t have to use the brand-name mixes in your oven. You can make your own! You can use common ingredients like cake mix and Bisquick to make basically the same thing you’d buy in a refill. And when you combine coupons with store sales, you can generally find items like cake mixes for 50¢.
Just to break it down for you: You can make about 25 oven mixes from a box of cake mix (the cake mix recipe below calls for 3 tbsp of mix). If you can get the cake mix for 50¢, that makes each oven mix 2¢. I’d say that far beats getting one mix for $3.50.
Tip: Store your cake mixes in storage bags with the instructions and measurements written on the outside. This will make it easy for your kids to practice measuring and to know which mixes belong to them.
Easy Bake Oven Recipes:
Red Velvet Cake
(this recipe can be used with any flavor, but red velvet is my favorite)
3 tbsp dry red velvet cake mix
1 tbsp milk
Grease your Easy Bake Oven pan. Mix the cake mix and milk in a bowl until smooth. Add to the pan, bake for 15 minutes, and then slide to the cooling chamber for 5 minutes.
You can do this twice to make a two-layer cake. Spread the frosting of your choice in between the layers and evenly on the outside of the cake.
Cheese Pizza
4 tbsp Bisquick
3 tsp milk
2 tsp marinara sauce
2 tbsp shredded mozzarella cheese
Grease your Easy Bake Oven pan. Mix the Bisquick and water in a bowl until a dough forms. Pat the dough into the pan, spread the sauce evenly on the dough, and sprinkle with cheese. Bake for 15 minutes and then slide to the cooling chamber for 5 minutes.
Chocolate Chip Cookies
1/2 tbsp sugar
1/2 tbsp packed brown sugar
1 tsp butter, softened
1/16 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp water
1 1/2 tbsp flour
1 tbsp chocolate chips
In a bowl, stir together the sugars and butter. Add the baking powder, water, and flour and stir until well combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.
Roll the dough into 6 cookie dough balls and place them on your greased Easy Bake Oven pan. Bake for 10 minutes and allow to cool.
Biscuits
1/4 cup Bisquick
4 tsp milk
Mix the Bisquick and milk together in a bowl until well combined. Drop 1/2 teaspoons of the dough onto your greased Easy Bake Oven pan. Bake for 10 minutes. Allow to cool.
