Figuring out what to give a small child can be tricky. There are so many toys out there, but this is still the age where the box is just as much fun. Here are some ideas of where to start if you are lost…  If you are shopping for another persons kid, always ask the parent before buying what they like or even what they already have.

A huge tip: stay away from clothes.  While they are a needed item, kids this age find it very boring and will cast it aside quickly. Clothes are a requirement at this age but not a fashion statement.

Your childhood returns!  Care Bears are back this year and are coming in as a hot toy.  The bears talk and sing to you, plus when you get more than one bear together they know they have friends near and talk to each other!  They can sign and dance in sync.  There are 4 different bears out this year.

If your kids aren’t asking for one yet, just wait… Netflix is also reviving Care Bears!

With the new Peanuts movie out in theaters, the characters are fresh in the minds of little ones.  Happy Dance Snoopy will also win them over with his crazy dance moves.  I saw this toy at an event in NYC earlier this year and had my then 3 month old with me.  She sat there mesmerized watching him dance.  I know her 3 year old sister will be even more enthralled.

Books, Books and More Books
No child can have too many books.  There are some super fun books out for this age that you love too.  The age range of 2-4 can be tricky for this one though since 2 year olds will destroy paper back books and need board books still.  No matter the age they can all be read to from anything.  Some of our favorites:

Kids love to make noise, even better if they can be their own DJ with a record player.  This is the exact toy many of us had brought back by Fisher-Price recently (I think that means we are antiques now).  There is storage for the records in the bottom and the player comes with 10 different tunes.  It’s very easy even for a 2 year old to figure out how to work it.

Doc McStuffins is all the rage, but a lot of the toys for it come with a hefty price tag.  This set comes with a lot of pieces, but a low price.  It’s a great way to give your kids a toys that’s on-trend but still fairly inexpensive.

Duplo Lego Sets

This is another great way to make littles feel like their big siblings.  Legos have always been a hit toy for many decades now, so start them building and creating early with larger blocks meant for smaller hands.  They have sets for girls, boys and basic gender neutral sets.  Thankfully for you the pieces are large enough that they don’t scatter as easily, but they do still hurt when you step on them.

This is the only time you can by a drum set that has batteries… don’t miss it.  What child doesn’t like to bang on things?  This set teaches them rhythm and beat but also teach letters and numbers at the same time.  We trust anything V-Tech and have a few of their toys, they hold up great and are being shared by younger siblings now thanks to their durability.
