As a mom I learned one very important less very quickly: my kids will do anything for a quarter. They know that making money isn’t just for grownups! There are plenty of jobs the kids can take on to earn a little extra spending money too.
It’s important for kids to learn the value of money at an early age as well as money management. Below are (10) ways the kids can earn some money.
Do note that these may vary on the appropriate age depending on the tasks. Also, keep in my mind the kids will need to be supervised and always working with a trusted adult.
10 ways your kids can earn extra money
1. Doing extra chores– While the kid’s probably already have certain tasks they are expected to do, it’s nice to give them the option to make a little extra money. They could sweep, dust, help fold laundry, etc. depending on their age.
2. Petsitting– Neighbors on the block might need someone to watch over their dog or cat while on vacation and the kids can be perfect for the job! It saves the owners money from having to board their pets, and it teaches responsibility to the kiddos. They can also be dog walkers too!
3. Recycle– This one might sound a bit strange, but recycling can add up to a pretty penny, and it helps the environment too. Have the kids collect unclaimed recyclables and take them to your local recycling plant to earn some extra change. You can usually get about 5¢ per bottle so while it’s not a lot, it can really add up quick.
4. Rake leaves– When Fall time comes around, the leaves can start to pile up in the yard. The kids can rake up the leaves in your yard or they can be hired by a neighbor. This goes for shoveling snow if you live in a cold climate too. If they are old enough, they can also have a lawn service and cut the grass.
5. Lemonade Stand\Bake Sale– This can be a great one for the kids when they are bored on a hot Summer day! They can make a batch of lemonade or bake some goodies and sell them for a quarter. It can also be fun for them to decorate signs and a stand where they can sell their items too.
6. Mother’s Helper-While the kids might not be old enough to babysit, being a Mother’s Helper is a great alternative. Moms need help with watching kids at home while they get some things done around the house.
7. Car Wash– Make signs and set up a car wash in the neighborhood. With a little soap and water, they could clean up cars for a fraction of the cost of the car wash. Great idea for a Summer day!
8. Teach Computer Skills– Older people might need help polishing up on their skills when it comes to computers. The kids could help out by teaching computer skills, setting up devices and answering questions about electronics.
9. Make & Sell Crafts– If the kids enjoy knitting, painting or making jewelry, they could consider selling what they make. Research craft fairs and festivals and consider renting a booth if there are lots of crafts to be sold. While these booths can be pricey, starting small at a local Farmer’s Market might be a good option.
10. Sell unwanted/Used items– Have the kids clean up the clutter and get rid of unwanted items. This helps to not only clean out the house but can make for a little extra profit too. They can sell video games to Game Stop, clothes to Plato’s Closet or if you plan to have a garage sale, they can have their own table.
