Taking a road trip always seems like a cheaper alternative when you see the crazy airfare prices, but in reality, we usually spend more money here and there. Don’t get me wrong, we always take road trips and I love all of the extra things we can do when we’re driving rather than flying. I guess it boils down to the experience you want on a trip. Sometimes the most memorable trips are the ones where you’re playing games in the car to make the time pass quicker.
A few things that we do to make road trips cheaper:
- Pack a cooler with snacks and drinks. Gas stations kill the budget with $1.50 sodas and $1.25 candy…
- Pack sandwiches and easy meals to eat in the car. You will save time and money by not stopping for every meal.
- Plan to stay in hotels that offer free breakfast.
- Stop by the library before you leave and check out books and even videos for the trip! We have one rule that is crucial – the books never leave the car. I will not loose a library book in a random hotel!
Planning is key. Look for the deals before-hand on things like car rentals or hotel stays so you can afford to splurge on a meal at that famous diner that was at the top of your list. RetailMeNot is just the stop for those savings.
