        RMN Road Trips

Have you had your fair share of road trips yet this summer?  Recently RetailMeNot conducted a survey about folk’s spending habits on road trips.

According to their survey, 38% of people are planning an overnight road trip this summer.  I think it’s common knowledge that we usually spend more money while on vacation than when we’re at home.  It’s just more convenient and a special time, so you don’t feel as guilty opening your wallet a little wider.  95% of Americans say that they normally end up spending more money than they planned while on a road trip.  Whether it’s food, gas, or souvenirs, you’re not alone.  RetailMeNot has been my go-to stop for online shopping, but did you know that they also have ways to save on road trips with sales and coupons?  Grab their app and you can select coupons to to just show right on your phone at local stores!

        RetailMeNot

Taking a road trip always seems like a cheaper alternative when you see the crazy airfare prices, but in reality, we usually spend more money here and there.  Don’t get me wrong, we always take road trips and I love all of the extra things we can do when we’re driving rather than flying.  I guess it boils down to the experience you want on a trip.  Sometimes the most memorable trips are the ones where you’re playing games in the car to make the time pass quicker.

A few things that we do to make road trips cheaper:

        • Pack a cooler with snacks and drinks.  Gas stations kill the budget with $1.50 sodas and $1.25 candy…
        • Pack sandwiches and easy meals to eat in the car.  You will save time and money by not stopping for every meal.
        • Plan to stay in hotels that offer free breakfast.
        • Stop by the library before you leave and check out books and even videos for the trip!  We have one rule that is crucial – the books never leave the car.  I will not loose a library book in a random hotel!

Planning is key.  Look for the deals before-hand on things like car rentals or hotel stays so you can afford to splurge on a meal at that famous diner that was at the top of your list.  RetailMeNot is just the stop for those savings.

This post is sponsored by RetailMeNot, but all opinions are 100% my own.
