Have you ever window shopped the mall wanting to buy it all but the thought of $50 for one shirt just wasn’t gonna work??

I want to encourage you to find a new way to look at the mall.  Take window shopping to the next level in a sense.  I recently had a girls day out and had a blast first going to the mall and “Window shopping” with my camera.  I took pictures of the window displays and what they were wearing and then we went to T.J. Maxx and Marshalls and recreated a look that I liked for a ton less.

First, why TJ Maxx or Marshalls:

They are the leaders in “Off-Price” clothing.  Everything is still name brand, but the price is between 30-60% lower than in a department store or designer store.  Some people think it is because they are flawed or off season, but really each of these stores get’s over 10,000 new items each week and they work hard to stay in season and with the trends.  According to their website for an item to be in their store it must meet these guidelines:

    ·    Fashion – It must be a fashion classic or an on-trend, current season style.
    ·    Quality – It must be first quality. We never compromise, ever.
    ·    Brand – It must be a designer or brand name that customers know, trust and desire.
    ·    Price – It must be negotiated to sell for up to 60 percent less than customers will find in a department or specialty store.

    Now for the fun:

I walked the mall on Saturday afternoon so I definitely got some looks as I took pictures, even had a few college guys offer to jump in the window for me. It was fun just to start thinking.  I’m not in any way a fashion expert so I wanted to really look at what was in season and in style, and try my hardest to match it.  That challenge is what makes this outing so much fun. I quickly noticed scanning through all the pictures that every window display was wearing a tailored jacket so I knew that was my first goal.  Then to match some of the shirts under the jackets.

After taking my pictures I went straight to Marshalls and T.J. Maxx.  I took the camera with pictures in and then stayed focused trying to rebuild my outfit for the least amount possible.  When you first walk into one of these stores the amount of clothing they offer can be overwhelming so shopping with a direct purpose also made it easier to sort through everything and only grab what worked to recreate my outfit.

        Getting a Bigger Paper

        Getting a Bigger Paper

Every weekend there are big variations in the newspaper insert coupons and I always try to encourage you to get the biggest paper available to you.  Newspaper publishers are cutting costs though by decreasing delivery areas which makes it harder for many of us to find bigger papers.

        Here are some ideas:

        • Try local bookstores or  Books-A-Million, Barnes & Nobles etc.  Most carry large papers on Sundays that are intact with all ads and inserts.  Talk to your store manager and ask them to order more if needed.
        • Check at your Grocery stores.  Many carry the biggest paper for your state on Sunday’s.
        • Find a local newsstand (if you live near the airport check their newsstands too).
        • Call a Relative that lives in those cities and pay them to mail you the inserts.  They only need to mail them every other week or every 3 weeks.

For anyone in Columbia SC — We have a newsstand here, off St. Andrews Rd, that gets the Charlotte Observer!!  They personally drive to Charlotte to get these so you will need to call by Friday at noon to reserve your copy for that Sunday.  They do charge a little more than the paper costs,$3.29 ea, to cover their delivery time and costs.  Call 798-6000 to reserve a copy.  You can reserve as many copies as you like!

I was recently given the opportunity to try out Chex Mix bars from My Blog Spark and General Mills.  I can’t say that they are my favorite (that’s another General Mills bar) but they were good.  My kids however would say that they were a favorite.  I made the mistake of explaining that they had cereal in them so one of my “too smart for their own good” 4 year olds decided that this made it an acceptable request for breakfast every morning.  I didn’t know what to say at first but then re-read the information sent with them:

they have less than 150 calories per bar and provide at least 8 grams of whole grain per serving (48 grams recommended daily)

The whole grains won me over and I decided this might be better for her than another more sugary breakfast option with no whole grains.  She was victorious and ate enjoyed breakfast wholeheartedly until the box was gone.  (Don’t worry breakfast also includes yogurt and fruit most mornings).  I’m also glad for her that Chex Mix bars are part of the Mage sale this week at Kroger.

Back to us adults though, this is really a great snack option if you crave sweets or chocolate.  Get your fix and stay healthy at the same time!  I like guilt-free treats.

Would you like to try them? Two readers will each win 2 boxes of Chex Mix bars!

To enter leave a comment of your biggest food craving or a healthy way to fix it.  I will pick the winners tomorrow.
