Using Savings For Good

using savings for good

I have written on this a long time ago, but felt today was a good day to bring it up again…

If you follow Southern Savers shopping lists or hunt out your own deals you are probably getting very stocked on the things you need and also pretty stocked on free things you might never need.  I want to encourage you to start something new in your house.

When you shop and see something on the list that is free, even if you don’t need it I encourage you to get it.  There are exceptions of course, but most of the time there is always someone who can use it.  A way to make this easy on you is to put a box in the bottom of your pantry or somewhere out of the way and put the little things you grab in there as you get them.  When the box is full deliver it somewhere.  There are so  many places that I can’t really make a list, but to generalize: homeless shelters, women’s abuse shelters, children’s homes, church ministry…

A few ideas:

  • Every time you go to Publix take the Food Lion printable to get one free Gerber baby food – you probably have a friend who would love the gift or any charity location can use it!
  • Even if you don’t like or need any more free toothpaste, shampoo etc. – toiletries are the biggest needs at most places
  • Food is always needed at Harvest Food Banks especially during the winter

You can do this as small or large as you like.  If you just shop one store there are usally 2-4 free things each week, grab one to give away and you already have a box bigger than most people give every year.  If you shop all the drugstores and a grocery store then you can have free things coming out of your ears.

Coupons.com has continued to load new coupons every few days. If you haven’t checked recently here are some of the new ones:

-$1 off 6pk of Quilted Northern
-$1 off any Kraft or POLLY-O String Cheese
    (we rarely get cheese coupons)
-$2 off Neutrogena Hair care product
-.40/1 any All or Surf Detergent
-$1 off Shedd’s Country Crock Side Dish
(great to stack with FL printable)
    B1G1 Meaty Bone products
.50 off any Tilex Mold and Mildew Remover

These are all coupons that we haven’t gotten recently in our inserts or are higher value than our inserts. If you think you will use any printable coupon you should always print it when you see it rather than when you plan to use it… it might not be there later.

      Watch your ECB’s…

Just a warning before you head out for the big Sunday/Monday deals.  Watch your ECB’s on the Sally Hansen Nail Polish.  For me they rang up cheaper than the $5.99 and did not print any ECB!

Sadly I was at a store that had no idea how to do the new manual printing so I get to call CVS in the morning.

You can still buy them and they will be free, just be ready to make them manually give you the ECB’s or to have to call the Customer Service when you get home.

I didn’t buy everything that was free but most of the items and all the other ECB’s printed without problems.

I have a question for you this morning.  Lots of other blogs find one deal and spot light each deal in it’s own post.  For example printable coupons.  I tend to find a group of them and highlight them.  Do you prefer a separate post on each great deal?

Ex. The free Ouchless products at Kroger, has been part of the Kroger deals all week but is being spotlighted on other sites today?  Would it help to pull those out? It doesn’t make my job any harder just makes more posts for you to read…

Now for a small soapbox…  I don’t get on these often so just ignore it if you want… This question comes after me getting a little miffed this morning on seeing a deal that I posted in the printable coupon list yesterday morning highlighted (even with the special instructions) in special posts on three other sites today but no credit here or to slickdeals where I had also posted how to print it.  I know we all forget (me included) to credit things or it seems so well known credit is not needed… but sometimes after working numerous nights in a row into the middle of the night it gets on your nerves…

Thanks for any feedback and thanks for letting me vent.  Now back to your regularly scheduled deals!

Here are some great printable coupons:

-$1.75 off any Reynolds Parchment paper printable (-thanks Anne)

-.50/1 off any Tabasco product printable (or from side bar) (makes small size free at many stores)

-.50/1 off any Tilex printable (or from side bar) (print and save for a sale)

Various Foster Farms Chicken product printables not a brand in my area but maybe someone can use it

$5 in Old Orchard Juice coupons by mail – register here

-$1/2 any (2) Pillsbury products printable (IE) or printable (FF)

Tip:  If something doesn’t print try using another browser to print it.  It is always best to print a coupon that you will use when you see it rather than waiting for when you will use it.  Odd’s are if you wait it won’t be there when you want it (or if you are like me you spend hours searching for it and never find it)

-$1/2 any Philadelphia Cream Cheese printable (on sale at EVERY Southern Savers store this week!!)
(This coupon is an individual link per person but… there is a way around this so you can print it!!  Attempt to print it, when it says you have already printed it there will be spots to email a friend.  Email yourself about the coupon and they will send you your own special link in a couple minutes!!)

With the market that we are in there are going to be a lot of stores closing down some or all locations in the next few months.  While it is sad for the store, it does mean good deals for us.

I am going to keep a running list of stores.  If you come across one share with us and I’ll add it, big or little stores it doesn’t matter as long as they are in the southeast.

                National Chains

                Circuit City – 155 stores
Office Depot – 112 stores (only 8 in the south)
Steve and Barry’s – all locations
KB Toy Store – all locations
Freidman’s, White Hall, and Crescent Jewelers – closing 363 remaining locations
Linen & Things – all locations and down to the last days

                Local Stores

                South Carolina
Tullulah – high end lingerie store currently up to 75% off – Columbia
                Sears Outlet Center – Columbia
