When you have many people in your family, it can be hard to make meals that make everyone happy. Although I don’t try to make everyone happy, it’s nice when you can have a meal everyone enjoys, no matter their preferences. “Bowl” meals are something I’ve seen around a lot lately, and they’re something we’ve been doing for a long time in our house. One of our favorite bowl meals is smoked sausage bowls, which are also a super frugal meal! Smoked sausage is frequently on sale at the grocery store, and the other components like rice and beans are always pretty inexpensive.

Smoked Sausage Bowls

There isn’t so much a recipe for smoked sausage bowls as there is explaining how we do it. You could add extra toppings, change up the kind of meat or beans you use, or do something just inspired by this idea. Here’s how we do it.

The firs step is to have the base of your bowl. In this case, it’s rice. I make Instant Pot jasmine rice, but you can make whatever kind of rice you like in whatever way you like to make it!

The next step is the smoked sausage. I like to cut the sausage into slices and then cut the slices in half, and then I just saute it in a skillet in a bit of olive oil until it starts to brown.

We like to black beans as an option for our smoked sausage bowls. You could make a special kind, but since you’re including so many other flavors, I just cook them straight from the can.

For the peppers and onions, I just saute them in olive oil in another skillet. However, if everyone in your family likes peppers and onions, you could just cook them in the same pan as the smoked sausage.

Then I just microwave a bag of frozen corn, add a bit of salt and pepper, and set that out as an additional topping.

Then just set out each of the ingredients (sausage, rice, peppers and onions, black beans, and corn) and let everyone assemble their bowls however they want to! Some other things you could set out include sriracha, hot sauce, salsa, cheese, and sour cream. I guarantee these smoked sausage bowls can be made to please even the pickiest eater!
