I always get asked, “When’s the best time to buy ____?”
For big ticket items, the answer is normally “on a 3 day weekend”! We always see the lowest prices over long weekends. There are a few specifics, though, depending on the time of year and current trends.
Here are all the deals to grab over the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend (plus a few to avoid and wait for another holiday).

Top Deals to Shop
- 45% off appliances at Lowes & Home Depot—remember to get them to honor other prices if you find it lower somewhere else and to even honor free delivery/haul away if others are offering that in your area
- 50% off mattresses at various retailers online and locally
- 25-40% off smart watches on sale at Best Buy
- Up to 50% off patio furniture at Walmart and Target
- Garden and yard planting deals on mulch, potting soil, and plants at both Home Depot & Lowes
- Large sporting goods items like kayaks and above ground pools
- Up to 70% off clearance items at Wayfair through 5/26
Stack the Savings
Many grocery stores will also offer rewards back on gift cards this week. So head to Kroger, Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods and others to get gift cards for any stores you plan to shop at. This will get you gas savings and then use those gift cards to buy the deals you want!

What Not to Buy
While many Memorial Day ads will include everything you want for summer, it doesn’t mean that this is the best time to buy. If you can hold out, here are some things to not buy over Memorial Day weekend.
- Grills—these are cheaper at end of season clearance around Labor Day
- Lawn mowers and other lawn electric or gas tools—another Labor Day buy
- Large TVs—these are better around Thanksgiving or even the Super Bowl
- Computers & Tablets—wait just a bit longer until back to school sales start in July
- Smaller sporting items and outdoor toys—wait for end of summer clearance to grab things you will enjoy next year
