Dollar General Gift Card Giveaway

Unfortunately, Summer is about to come to a screeching halt.

Isn’t that how it always happens – out of nowhere?  Now we’re all scrambling to buy everything on school supply lists and get the kids ready.  We can’t lose sight of our wallets, though!

Rather than falling prey to the common excuse “I don’t have time to save money,” focus on easier ways to save when things get crazy.   You can start with this Suave offer: save $2 instantly when you buy $6 worth of participating Suave products.  You don’t even need any coupons!  Just grab the items and you’ll get the savings at the register.

If you want some coupons though… play the new Dollar General game, The Savings Search.  It’s a back to school themed photo hunt game, for a chance to earn even more savings!  Finish the game to also save $1 on any Suave Professionals Shampoo or Conditioner (28oz), Suave Natural Infusions (12.6 oz), or any Suave Hand & Body Lotion (excluding trial and travel).  I played the game and I’m going to warn you:  the third thing is always the hardest to find.  It’s a timed “find the differences” game that you will probably find slightly addictive.

I love tax free weekend, even though I don’t have any kids in school. I buy items for a local charity that gives school items to needy kids.

    • mami2jcn

I look for sales and use store coupons.

    • Nora S Camacho

I waited for today to get my kids school supplies. Today starts the no tax day here in SC. 8% is a lot to save on top of coupons and sales. I have TQ and MQ ready for folders. I had some notebooks from Kroger when it was on sale for 19c. I also had backpacks when they were on clearance last year. I always buys extra for the future use. Plus I still have left over school supplies, whenever clearance events come, I stocked and hide them for future use.

    • Erin K

    • Rebecca

wait tax free weekend and I also buy items we need that I get money back at the store (etc. Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid) to pay for the back to school items.

    • Ms. D

And sometimes they are packaged in bulk, so I have extras to donate as well. Right now I am stocked up on one subject binders and book covers! Anybody need some?!!

      • HTaylor

And Goodwill is tax free everyday! Also, with their rewards program, you can earn an extra 25% discount! The South Carolina Goodwill’s are the best that I have ever seen!

    • Brittney Mathews

    • peggy

I watch Southern Savers for all the best deals.

    • Chanique Nicole Jones

I save the most money during back to school season by recycling last years supplies. Things such as unused notebooks, pencils, colored pencils, sharpeners, etc. are put into a tub once school is out. From there, I purchase what is needed – usually from Staples. It seems those stores usually have better deals than Target or Walmart.

    • Samantha Edu

Our children go to a charter school and usually after the first semester we get a new school supply list. This money would go towards the second semester school supplies and teacher requests since we donate for teacher supplies also

If my 4th grader requires dry erase markers I will buy two packs of 3 at the Dollar Tree instead of a pack of 6 for $8 at Walmart then I can afford to replace them when he leaves the cap off, shares with friends, etc. I can get 24 for the price of 6….it’s not algebra. :)

    • Katherine

I follow the sales online and combine them with my coupons. I save so much money that I am able to donate the extra supplies to the teachers.

    • S_Carolina_Girl

Staples almost always offers 25% back in rewards with the tax free weekend. I also use lots of Target coupons to get free stuff.
I tried stacking coupons at Dollar General once, and they would not accept my manufacturer coupon on top of their sale price. They told me it could not be done, despite their coupon policy stating otherwise. Customer service also told me the same thing. I was so frustrated I haven’t gone back, however, if I won a gift card I won’t pass up free stuff. I could really use it too to help with back to school.

    • Amanda Alford

I try to keep track of sales. I also try to buy a little more when its on sale so that we can use it the next year.

    • cheryl

I get all the deals that I can online and try to use coupons for these items.

    • Tamra M

For school supplies I usually look at the next weeks sales ad before purchasing any items for the current week just in case another store has the same item for less. I also buy enough for two school season and just replenish if the price is right or items are on end of season clearance. My friends and I usually do this so if I don’t have an item we trade of give to each other as well.

    • kelbs

I have two college students living at home. We save LOTS of money by using book prince comparison sites to purchase our textbooks. We often find everything we need for 75% less than the college bookstore.

    • Melanie D

I have a daughter who is about to enter her freshmen year in college, a son that is entering third grade, and a baby that is about to turn a year! Yeah, I know they are so spread out. Well with having three kids I have to find the best bargains out there and try and find all of the things they want and need at least 70% off. I have been using coupons for years and so I match the online ads to find the cheapest price, then match my coupons, and go have a ball as the savings start to rack up!

    • Kelly

I shopped ahead for a number of items. Last year, I found a nice sports theme backpack at Old Navy for just $3.50 with a matching lunchpack, $2.50. • Nancy

In the back to school season, try these tips: Assess what you already have before you buy more. Sell, consign or trade outgrown clothes for new sizes you need. Stock up on essentials during back to school sales.

    • Jake

      No name brands!!

    • Samantha

I wait until after school starts because I have found that the generic school lists are NOT want the teachers actually want. Last year it said he needed 4 3-ring binders, for example. He needed NONE.

I have mostly picked up things at Wal-Greens as my filler items at check out. I also have been picking up things throughout the year vs. getting things all a few weeks before school starts. Yes, lots of deals every where happening just for back to school, but finding those deals in the off season pays off too!

This year I left the kids w Dada… And I had a late night date w Target. I stacked Target printable coupons + manufacturers + Target Text Coupons + 5% Red Card Discount. I saved SO much this year… All in ONE store & had a nice night at Target alone… with Quiet :). Came out DONE w the school supplies charades & a Starbucks coffee!! What a way to treat myself I’d say!

My mom used to work at an office supply store that ended up closing 2 years ago, so she has a LOT of stuff that I can use for my son’s schooling. I’m very glad of that, because the school supply deals aren’t nearly as good as they’ve been in the past. I used to shop the big staples/office max/office depot sales each year…what’s up with them not offering the great deals?

    • BethMc

Luckily our school gave us our school supply list for first grade at the end of kindergarten, so I’ve been watching the sales all summer to grab all the best deals!

I go to the huge consignment sales for my babies on and they all wear hand me downs, 3 girls ages 2, 1 and 2 months!
I am also teaching my daughter 17 and her friend how to coupon so they can save up for their first place. Oh and one major tip for all like to stock pile…apartment complex is a great way to get several Red Plum mail coupons, everyone tosses them.

    • Lori

I shop the sales all year and keep a “school bag” with lots of school supplies in it at all times. So when school is getting ready to start, we “shop” the “school bag” first before going out to shop the stores. It saves tons of time and money! It’s amazing how little is needed for the upcoming school year.

    • Jamie Buchanan Benningfield

Keep my eye out for deals throughout the year that I know will be needed when school starts.

    • MaryMWithrow

I usually buy clothes the years before when they go on sale. I also grab all the deals and take advantage of all the free shipping

    • Cici Green

Coupons, Sales, and Consignment Shops. Also check out clearance racks first, not last. I also purchase a year ahead and am always putting back for the next season. Stores always seem to put items on clearance way before end of season anyway, so the wait time until the item gets used is really only about 9 months or less. Your children will adapt. Now my daughter who is grown and own her own heads straight for the back of the store first where she knows the markdowns are. Makes me so proud. :)
