Lately I’ve gotten a number of emails or Facebook comments asking why Southern Savers requires you to login to print a shopping list.  While this is something that we rolled out 8 months or so ago, I thought I’d take a second and explain what exactly the login is for.  (This maybe review for some of ya.)

First, the Login is not anything to benefit me.  I do not sort, file, or analyze your data.  With over 1 million saved grocery lists a month that would require computers I am too cheap to buy…

About a year ago we rolled out a much smarter shopping list.  One that could be tailored to the area you live and only show you the coupons that were in your actual paper, instead of sending you looking for coupons that came in a paper 3 states away.  For a while we ran two systems keeping up the programming behind the old system for those that hate logins (even if they make life easier) and the new system.  In the end it cost way too much to maintain both and since things around here are free we had to pull the plug on the old “no sign-in” system about 7 months ago.

So yes, we are asking that folks login now.  That said, this login thing is actually pretty awesome!

Here’s what the system does for ya:

  • Create a Shopping List with coupons shown only for the newspaper that you get.  If your newspaper is not listed, pick the closest city near you and maybe even consider volunteering to cover your area
  • Save your Shopping List forever (or until you decide to delete it). You can also keep adding to it, editing it and even putting multiple lists from Southern Savers together on one printable list!
  • Track your Savings in the Savings Tracker.  You can track by store and see your total grocery budget.
  • Search with the Item Search just for things you need right now across only the stores you have in your area.  You can also make a shopping list of just the things you searched for.

We have a number of other features planned, but for right now this is already more than any other couponing site.  I’m quite proud of what we’ve built, and that life around here is still completely free for everyone!

In order to fully use these features the system had to know who you were, what paper you get and what stores you like to shop at.  Thus we needed a login feature so that it could remember those things about you.

If there are ever things you would like to see us add please let me know.  I’m also open to feedback on current things.  Leave a comment or send me an email at jenny@southernsavers.com.  What I don’t like getting are emails just saying that you’ll never use the site again… so it would be a little more pleasant if you could be constructive in your feedback.

I personally like the log in and saved list feature! Helps me keep track of things!

I haven’t tried the login option for ages now because I like to copy and paste the items on the list into a Word document arranged in the order they’re arranged in in my store. With the login version it wouldn’t let me select the items. It was weird. But I stopped using it.

You could fix that by making the items able to be rearranged more than just within their category. If I could move a B1G1 into another category to make them in the right order for my store, I’d be OK with logging in all the time.

      • Kim

I totally agree! I would love to be able to move things around by the order of my store. When I was creating my list for Harris Teeter Super Doubles, I went to the 3 different lists (regular price, sale price, and unadvertised) and combined them into one shopping list, but when I would view my list, it still had them separated by categories. It is frustrating at times!

    • Deanna

I’ve never had to login to print… so I’m confused. I don’t make custom lists either though, so maybe it’s what you are talking about?

    • Klovesrc

I love that instead of it saying delete old shopping list that is says Destroy!!

      • Tie Dye Jen

        me too!

    • I make custom lists and, thank goodness, I’ve not had to sign in. If it becomes necessary to sign in, then I will go to THE KRAZY COUPON LADY as they don’t require sign in. But for now, I’m staying with SS as long as I don’t have to sign in. Sorry to all those who can’t just print their list.

      • Do you not want it to only show you the coupons in your area? I would love to know why logging in so negative. We don’t send emails or anything related to it, just need to know who you are to tailor your coupons.

You already have to login to leave comments on the site so it’s not really any different than that.

        • Hi Jenny! For me, signing in is another step that is not necessary. Thank you for wanting to tailor the coupons to my area, but I like seeing all available coupons – especially when I get extra coupons from my FL friends.

Honestly, the less information I need to provide, the better. I’m very careful in that I do not use my children’s names or give my specific location to my readers. This is my preference at this time. Yes, I find logging in and providing specific information – that I don’t find necessary for getting great deals – negative.

I use Disqus to log in for comments which limits the information readily available. My thought is that I can always post private information. But once it is out, it is really hard to get that privacy back. So, I tend to err on the side of caution and only give out information when I deem it necessary.

Getting coupon deals is not necessary for me when there are so many other coupon matching sites. I’m hanging here at SS as long as I can continue printing without logging in. Thanks!

      Hi Jenny,

I really cannot begin to thank you for all you do. I would NEVER have started couponing if it wasn’t for you and what you do. I don’t mind the login. I just use my couponing email acct.

      Hopefully constructive feedback:
!. Unless it’s been recently corrected (like in the last 1-2 weeks), I have noticed that the “Search by Item or Brand” feature doesn’t work for me if I’m logged in. Products I search for when logged in will say there’s no sale, but if there is indeed a sale on that item, it will show up if I’m NOT logged in.
      2. I never realized how much I loved and appreciated the acorns “starring” really good deals until they stopped showing up on logged in lists. It’s certainly not something I’d deem a priority item, but just in case you didn’t know the acorns disappear on logged in lists, they vanish. :-) I’d love to see them on my lists again in the future if it’s possible.

Thank you again for ALL you do!

      • Thanks for the feedback! I’ve never noticed that the acorns dissappear when logged in, is this on the main site or on a shopping list you’ve made? I’ll have my husband look into it!!

For the item search I think I know the answer there :) Go under your profile and make sure you have selected all the stores in your area. The item search will only return sales for the stores you have when you are logged in versus returning every sale in the 31 stores on SS when you are logged out. Should fix it all!!

          Hi Jenny,

I’m sorry for the slow response. We’re hosting an orphan boy from Ukraine this summer and hoping to adopt him and things have been a bit crazy!

The acorns only disappear when I create the shopping list. They are the main site when logged in, but go *poof* when I create the list. :-)

I’ll need to double check my profile because I know I’ve selected stores somewhere and I’m assuming there’s only one place to do that. I’ll make sure my stores are saved.

          Thank you so much!!!

    • sbeatty

Above it states that you can add to your Shopping List or put multiple lists together on one printable list. How do you do that?

      • When you are logged in the bottom “Create List” box should have a place to select a list you’ve already made. Just pick the name of the list you started already and then click Create List. It will add all the new items to the already existing shopping list!

    • Will you post instructions on how to login correctly?

    • jlaura

I absolutely love the login feature as I take advantage of
all the benefits that come with it such as being able to track my savings, make
changes on my lists, etc. My experience
on Southern Savers has been nothing but awesome! Jenny, I thank you so much for
your time and knowledge. I have become better
at couponing because of you! Thank you and Happy 4th!

    • Lyndi Hedgecock

I also would love, love, love it if you could add a feature that would allow you to move the items to different categories. I ALWAYS arrange my list by aisle and it would be helpful to be able to move things from say a BOGO section to a produce section and whatnot. Thank you so much for all that you do!

Just wanted to make a suggestion that if logging in seems to be too much trouble, consider changing your browser settings so that it does not clear out your cookies/cache when you close out. I open and close my browser all the time and am not prompted to log in each time I visit the site – it remembers me and I just continue on as usual. A simple fix if logging in each time you visit is bothersome, because I find that the benefits of doing so are great! I love the ability to create a list, to go back and add/edit it until I’m ready to print, and keep track of my savings.

I do echo the suggestion of enabling list items to be reordered between categories once you’ve saved your list – I could probably shave a good bit of time off my shopping trips if I could order things according to my store’s layout, especially when I go with my kids!

Thank you Jenny for everything you do to provide such a helpful website. Your site is the primary reason I have been successful is cutting our grocery and household costs greatly over the past 3 months! I know there is so much work involved in something like this and I am grateful that you provide it all for free!

    • Tie Dye Jen

I like what others said about moving items to a different category and would like to be able to delete a section heading if I delete all the items under it. Also, I would like to be able to combine two lists that are already created. Sometimes I don’t get around to going to CVS til Saturday night and I have already saved the new week’s list separately, but would like them together for ease of shopping both weeks’ ads. Thanks for all you do!
