We all have crazy weeks and this was one for me. We got home from a trip on Monday afternoon, and haven’t stopped going since! I can imagine with end of the school year activities I’m not the only one who has had that kinda week…
Normally I get my coupons together Wednesday morning before heading to the stores, but this week I went up to Charlotte to film a few segments with the Charlotte Today show and never found the time to gather any coupons. I tried to practice what I teach though and still shopped the sales.
Coupon or no coupon, if items you will use are on sale this week you need to grab them. Following store sale cycles it means that items on sale this week won’t be back on sale for 6 weeks. You don’t want to miss the sale and have to pay full price! So leave the coupons at home and at least grab the sales.
We always head to Publix and Bi-Lo to look for unadvertised deals so I gathered sale items at both stores that we will use. I did find two coupons in the store at Publix (thanks store dispenser lady for keeping those stocked). That was it. I kinda feel like a fraud confessing, but truth is best.
Even without the coupons though we still saved almost half!
Publix –

We grabbed a lot of produce, and milk along with BOGO deals. Had I just stuck with BOGOs we would have been an easy 50% saved, but milk always brings the savings down.
Bi-Lo –

Total Saved: $37.81
This was all BOGO deals and a few closeouts. I also used some Plenti Points from a previous trip to bring the out of pocket cost down.
Tip: A few of the items we grabbed did have coupons on them. Check with your store because they may let you come back with coupons the next day and use them still!
I love hearing from you all and get so many encouraging emails each day of people who are able to stretch their budget and meet their goals. I also get lots of questions, so I thought today I would knock out one of the top questions I get:
How do I know when the coupon inserts are expired?
For everyone that uses the whole insert method of coupon organization (my favorite), you can feel like you need to keep those inserts forever. It’s that or you have to go through each page and look at the expiration dates…
Honestly 12 weeks worth are all you really need to keep. There is a great trick I use though to be sure I’m aren’t tossing valid coupons.
Pull up the coupon database and search the date of the insert in question. Inserts have a one or two digit month and two digit day (ex. SS 8/14, RP 1/08). The database will only show coupons that are still good to use:
If there are any coupons that haven’t expired, they will be listed and you can clip those few. (The four coupons shown above). If nothing comes up, you are good to get rid of the insert!
What should I do with expired inserts?
The preferred option is to send expired coupons to the troops who can use them up to 6 months past the expiration date. If not, I suggest you at least recycle them.
