The time changes this weekend. Hopefully this reminder helps you not be late for church…

There are a few things that I want to encourage you to get into the habit of doing every time the time changes. The most important is one that most of us can’t remember the last time we did it.

Change Your Smoke Detector Batteries
This is by far the easiest home project and probably one of the most important. Some folks will tell you that testing them is all you need to do, but changing the batteries only costs a few dollars and if needed it’s something you’ll never regret doing. We nearly burned down our kitchen 6 years ago leaving a pot on the stove that we thought was off while we went outside to look through a telescope. If it weren’t for a working smoke detector the child sleeping right above the kitchen probably wouldn’t be here. So I’m a little passionate about this one!
Clean Out Your Exterior Dryer Vent
This is another fire prevention task. Most of us don’t think about this one, but your exterior dryer vent collects lint too and needs to be cleaned out regularly. According to national statistics about 16,000 home fires occur each year because of dryers!
Vacuum Refrigerator Coils
When was the last time you did this? Yeah that’s what I thought. This helps your refrigerator run better and more efficiently. It takes just a few minutes to push the refrigerator away from the wall and vacuum. Most models have an opening in the back so you won’t have to take anything apart, just vacuum.
Clean out Gutters
This one is a bit of a larger project, but is a great thing to plan on doing twice a year. Cleaning out gutters helps to protect your roof from leaks, which in the end saves a lot of money!

Going ahead and scheduling these things in your brain for time change weekends means it at least gets done twice a year. While it may be a slight inconvenience, some of these are well worth the extra minutes it takes!
