Earlier, we talked about sales cycles and stocking up for 6 weeks worth. While this works great for most items, there are some items that do not follow this traditional cycle. You really already know most of these items, but just so you don’t come back and yell at me that your peeps are never on sale… let’s cover it.
For items that go on sale less often, you will need to stock up for longer. Having a large freezer does come in handy for this, but many items will be fine in the pantry.
Baking Goods
Baking goods such as flour, sugar, butter, chocolate morsels, etc. tend to go on sale around Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. That’s it. So, whenever a sale period happens you need to stock up until the next sale period.
How much you will need will vary based on what your family will use. Keep in mind that some items, like butter and chocolate, will freeze.

Produce
Produce is at it’s lowest price when it is in season. Some type of produce will always be on sale, but you should stock up on family favorites. You will need to preserve it to keep it from rotting though.
Some great methods are freezing, canning, or making things like jelly. I am personally a huge fan of freezing as it is very simple and easy.
To get the best price you should buy in bulk from somewhere like your local farmer’s market. You can learn more about saving on produce here.
Temperature Specific Foods
Foods that are more temperature specific don’t come on sale certain times of the year. No one wants soup when it’s 110 degrees outside.

– Frozen Ice Cream & Novelty Treats (Not On Sale In Winter – Jan-Mar)
– Charcoal (Only In Summer & Grilling Holidays)
– Hot Drink Mixes (Only During Winter)

Holiday Specific Foods
There are certain grocery items and meats that only go on sale around holidays.
– Spiral Ham
– Turkey
– Stuffing
– Cranberries
– Corned Beef
– Eggnog
– Fried Onions
– Candy (Best Deals Around Holidays)
Now that we have the sale and cycle part down, tomorrow we are going to figure out where to get all those coupons that make great deals!

As we strive to get healthy in our house we are turning to healthy home cooked meals and trying to make better choices. There is one rule my husband makes me stick to though, no matter how healthy I want to make meals they must have meat in them. If I break that rule he is hungry again in an hour and that leads to grumpy husband…
One great change we’ve made is adding more turkey. I feel like a character from Forest Gump, but you’ll be surprised how much you can make with turkey!! My husband wasn’t 100% on board, until he tried it. We followed a recipe on Wholly Guacamole’s site for a Jack & Guac Turkey Burger.
