Coupons.com is trying something new, and giving you the option to pay a monthly fee to get more coupons.  You pay $3 per month or $30 per year to get access to coupons that are exclusive to the “club”.

Here are the coupons I’ve seen so far for members:

          $2 off 3M Post-It Pop-Up Note Dipenser, $5 +
          $1/2 Bacardi Frozen Mixers
$1 off Blue Dog Bakery Treats
$.50/1 Bob Evans Refrigerated Side Dish
          $1 off Cooking Light Magazine
$3 off Law Abiding Citizen on DVD or Blue-Ray
          $1.50 off Opti-Free PureMoist solution, 10 oz +
$1.50 off Seattle’s Best iced lattes, 4 pk
          $2 off Tioconazole ointment
          $1.25/2 Vanity Fair napkins
          $1.25/2 Zest bodywash

Looking at the coupons, I have to say I’m not impressed.  I keep thinking that $30 you could get a 2 year subscription to All You magazine with each issue having $50+ in coupons.  So that’s $1200 at least in coupons with All You versus the $12.50 in coupons above (maybe $150 annually).  If you are going to spend money on coupons one option seems like a much better deal.

What’s your take? Would you pay the $3 for access to exclusive coupons?

menu plan a hint of fall

I know it’s still 90+ degrees in the South but the store flyers are starting to include hints of fall produce.  I love figs so I’ve included a quick spread that will be great on a quick piece of toast or muffin.

It’s always the most cost effective to cook with seasonal produce or buy extra when it’s on sale & freeze it.

I have always wanted to try a FoodSaver vacuum sealer, so finally I got brave and just asked them if I could review one and of course give one away to you guys.  My unit arrived this week and we tore into it and then searched the house for things to seal.  I kind of felt like a 5 year old playing with a new toy, but it’s just plain fun to see it suck everything down and completely seal it.

What is a FoodSaver?  A FoodSaver is a vacuum sealing system that takes all of the air out of a bag of food, but it locks in the flavor.  Foods stay fresh for up to 5 times longer and won’t get freezer burn for years since they don’t come in contact with cold, dry air.  I’m really tired of buying meat in bulk but then after a month or two not being able to tell what type of meat it is thanks to freezer burn being all over it.

For me if I can buy in bulk and not fight freezer burn that’s a massive amount of money saved!  I’m not throwing away a ton of food that has gone bad because we haven’t had time to eat it.   We love to buy produce in season and store it for the winter so this is a huge help!!  I know for some of you the thought of paying for a unit when normal zipper bags are less than $1 on sale is hard, but for us the amount that we freeze this really is awesome to have no freezer burn.  In the end counting in the value of the food it makes sense to me to pay a little more to store the food if I now can store the food 10 times longer!

I must admit, it took me once or twice to get the hang of the machine, but once I effectively vacuum sealed my first thing we were off vacuum sealing half the freezer getting rid of the traditional freezer bags.

One other thing I hope to play with this week, is prepping meats before freezing with seasonings and marinades, then sealing them and having dinner already marinated and ready to go!
