Try out a new Synthetic Motor Oil by Green Earth Technologies and get a FREE 5 qt. bottle after mail-in-rebate.  The 5 quart bottle is only sold at Walmart, but you can read a ton of great reviews for the oil on Amazon.

You need to purchase your 5 quart bottle by Sept. 9th and mail in the rebate by Oct. 1st.  Limit one per household.

A little about the oil:
It’s environmentally safe, biodegradable high performance motor oil that is 100% renewable and recyclable.

That since oil is the highest cost of an oil change that makes an entire oil change pretty cheap!

This post brought to you by Zimmerman Advertising. All opinions are 100% mine.

Take a minute and think about your car.  Mine is a nice little mini van with over a hundred thousand miles on it, a layer of melted crayons in the cup holders and a few lost toys under the seats.  I know it’s no Cadillac, but it’s mine, it’s paid for and it’s a vital part of our life.

I don’t really think any of us can live without our cars in today’s world.  The grocery store is 5 miles + away, church is a 25 minute drive, our parents live 3+ hours away… honestly the thought of not being able to leave the house to just get to the park makes me jittery.

Now to your car.  When was the last time it got a good tune up?  an oil change, tire rotation, clean air filter?  If your house is like mine you have no clue.  The car is needed, but I (and you) don’t have time or money to give to it.

Enter Pep Boys, they recently sent us a gift card for an oil change and inspection and wanted me to try out their online registration and tracking system.  I can’t turn down a free oil change, so I hopped online found the nearest location and quickly had my car registered.  It took all of 5 minutes to pick an appointment time and enter the car’s info.  We printed out the paper work and dropped it off at night, all registered and ready for it’s 8 am appointment.  The fun part was they send you a tracking # for your car and you can log on and see at any point where your car’s progress is.  I love it!  (Seriously more professions should come up with something list this…).

Getting the car back I’m pretty sure it is happier, it doesn’t talk a lot but I always feel like it is more spry after we show it some tlc.

Pepboys is giving away a $50 Pep Boy’s gift card to 5 different readers! I don’t know who is happier, you or your car.

HP 16 GB TouchPad for $99!!

              on 8.20.2011 at 8:35am

Yes you read that right, HP has decided to cancel production of their HP Touchpad mostly to move to another operating system.  This means that they are selling off all their current Touchpads for basically 1/4 of the original price!

              You can get:

16 GB Touchpad with WiFi for $99

32 GB Touchpad with WiFi for $149

They are already sold out online, but this is going to be the price at all retailers, so check Best Buy, Amazon, Staples etc. both online and in stores around.

What does this mean on the technical side?
They are stating that they will still support existing WebOS devices so you should be able to still get current apps for it and tech support.  You will probably find that no new apps are made though or software updates

My take (and my computer engineer husbands take) if you are wanting a tablet device for note taking, calendar, or internet browsing then jump on this now!  It’s an awesome price and has all the main functionality you will ever want.  Plus it at least has the Kindle app…

You can also watch a recent video comparing the Touchpad vs. iPad.

                Free Magazines From Recyclebank

You all know about the awesome coupons you can get with Recyclebank, but looking through their rewards there are other fun prizes too.

All of their magazine subscriptions are 115 points, which you can easily earn right now in the Green Your School Year challenge!

Normally my rule of thumb is to pay no more than $5 for a year or $10 for a really premium magazine subscription.  Free is always better though!

                115 Point Magazines

                Better Homes & Gardens
                Cosmopolitan
                Everyday Food
                Good Housekeeping
                Bazaar
                Marie Claire
                Parents
                Popular Mechanics
                Redbook
                Seventeen
                Town & Country
                Whole Living
                Martha Stewart Weddings
                Martha Stewart Living

If you are new to Recyclebank, it’s a program where you earn points by completing games and tasks and then redeem the points for coupons – or in this case FREE magazines!

In our neck of the woods school started back this week.  With that brings the lovely expense of buying books for older kids.  One option you may not have thought of though is renting textbooks.  If you know they are taking a low level class and are never going to want to keep the book you might really want to look into this.

Behind the scenes of Southern Savers I have a few college students that come and help with all kinds of things, so we were researching how to save and came across the idea of renting your books.  There are three main websites that do this and they all creamed the local bookstore price handsdown.

Here’s a rundown of the three sites:

                  • BookRenter.com allows you to rent for a full or partial semester.  They also offer free shipping both ways! Use code TT5%OFF to get 5% off your total purchase.
                  • Chegg.com has 130 day rentals (full semester).  Shipping is $3.99 for the first book and $2.99 for any others.  Use code aff51 to get 5% off your total purchase.
                  • CollegeBookRenter.com allows full or partial semester rentals.  Currently the are offering free shipping through 8/31 and return shipping is always free.  Use code SAVEWITHCBR to get 5% off your total purchase.

To give you an idea of the savings:

                  Fundamentals of Human Resource Management
                  Purchase New $134
                  Purchase Used: $95.24
                  Rental: $42-$53 (after 5% savings)

I know from my experience buying the used version and selling it back later I only got maybe $30-$40 for books (if I was lucky), so to me this comes out to pretty good deal.

As with all online deals, you can even get cash back from your text books!  Go through Shopathome.com or Ebates and get between 4% and 7% cash back from the three sites above.

Do you have any other tips or tricks for saving on college text books??
