iPad Mini Giveaway

Have you been gearing up for the September $1,000 Savings Challenge?  There are countless ways to save and one of them are mobile apps!

It’s a free app that gives you rebates for the groceries that you buy.  When you buy select products and redeem, you’ll have cash deposited into your Ibotta account within 48 hours.  Learn more about how it works.

Checkout 51:

Checkout 51 is another free app where you receive cash back.  Browse the offers, buy them at the store, take a photo of your receipt and get cash back!  See all the details on Checkout 51.

This is a fairly new app even though their program has been around for awhile.  Offers are now redeemable at Walmart, Target, Walgreens, Dollar General others thanks to the new app.  You can buy items, scan your receipt and redeem offers from their easy to use app.  Watch this video with more details on the program.

Southern Savers:

Let’s not forget about the Southern Savers app in this money-saving roundup.  With the app, making lists and tracking savings from your phone is even easier!  Life can get busy and we don’t always have time to print out a shopping list, so take it with you on your phone.

The Giveaway:

We usually associate “mobile” apps with phones.  But you can use them on your tablet, too.  To help you use these money-saving apps to reach your September Savings Challenge goal, I’m giving away an iPad Mini to one reader!

Leave a comment below telling me how you’re going to save money in September!

    • Cici Green

Oh form below, where did you go? Your missing I see, as I send out a plea. Dear Jenny, please help! We need some direction. The form that is listed seems to need a connection. :) If I could just find this connection you see, oh how happy I would be. A chance to win this wonderful thing, might possibly just make my heart sing. Thank you dear Jenny for all you do, I really appropriate it, God bless you. :)

Thanks for the update Jenny. I plan on saving money this month by couponing, using checkout51, savings star. I’m limited to those two because I haven’t an iphone or a device that can use the apps. I also plan on saving by shopping for a different insurance rate on homeowners & auto insurance. I sew, craft, and resale re-purposed/furbished furniture, so I’m very busy at that also. My garden is winding down but there are still greens to look forward to and put in my freezer. I find the garden a huge blessing and savings. I’m busy getting ready for Christmas. Finishing my last hand crafted projects. I never shop at Christmas unless it’s unavoidable. Busy with preventive health for people and pets. It’s always more cost effective to not get sick or ill in the first place. Just all around saving and trying to find the best deals on everything my family needs. I pay very close attention to how I spend my money, for example my bank has a program attached to our checking. By running our transactions as credits instead of debits we get back 1%. That doesn’t sound like much, but when you pay your bills (mortgage, power, ect.) that way in combination with your grocery and other transactions, it adds up. It’s like getting back 1% of your annual income and I’ll take it and smile while I do. :) That’s just some of the way’s I’ll save this month.

To all of the participants who have entered thus far: There isn’t a form to fill out for the iPad giveaway. All you have to do is respond to this post by answering the question: “How are you going to save money in September”?

In order to save money in September, I will continue to do what I have been doing thus far: 1. Continue to follow http://www.southernsavers.com so I can see if the things I need are on sale 2. Continue to use coupons because a penny saved is a penny earned 3. Continue to use Ibotta, Checkout 51, Upromise, SavingStar, Manufacturer rebates, etc. so I can save money. They make a lovely rainy day fund for me! :)

    • ctrinkle

September is my birthday month! I sign up for every marketing email I possibly can– because usually I receive free birthday coupons! I’ve already received a free sandwich from Zaxby’s– BOOM! I LOVE FREEBIES!!

    • Erin

We also are going to try to eat out less and healthier too!

    • Ryleigh’s_MeMe

September is deer season. We save by harvesting our own meat and processing it at home. Also had a great crop from the garden this year that has help a lot with the cost of groceries. I will continue to use the tools on Southern Savers to shop for personal care, household goods, and diapers – which has been such a blessing!

    • Donna

Saving star is the only one I can use because you do it on line. I don’t have a sophisticated enough phone for the others. If I win that is how I’ll save more money with the apps. And if not I’m going to try not to go to the store as often this September – that will save me.

    • Kelsey Taylor

We are saving by using coupons for back to school clothes.

    • melsmayhem

We are using down our stockpile since we have no room while we save to move out. And, keeping a close eye on needs vs. wants. I love the apps and use them to get that little bit extra on stuff we are already buying.

    • michelle

By using up all the grocery items in the back of my pantry and bottom of freezer.

    • Melinda

Doctor informed us yesterday my daughter has high intolerance to gluten and dairy, so we intend to make some major dietary changes. In my mind that also equals possible grocery total increases. How to save money? I’m going to use the BerryCart app. Similar to Checkout 51 and Ibotta, but geared more toward organic and ‘healthy’ grocery purchases.

    • theaikenparrs

We are going apple picking and will eat apples all month long AND gift them to teachers – so we will stay healthy, have fun, be active, support local business and give healthy gifts we pick ourselves.

    • Britney

By using my digital coupons and apps to save money. Thank you for all you do.

    • I am going to get “uncomfortable.” Meaning, I am going to try new things and take on ideas from other readers. Additionally, I plan to blog weekly about the challenge so that I can hold myself accountable. My youngest child has a birthday in September (she is turning 4), so I will need to look for ways to have a great birthday on a small budget.

    • Rere

By using all of my Labor Day and back to school deals and coupons. A lot of clothing stores are having end of season sales, I will be buying for next year as well.

    • Mia

My plan is to cut down on the number of times I eat out for Lunch and Dinner. My pledge is to only eat out one day a week for Lunch and one day a week for Dinner. This is going to be very hard, because I eat out every day at lunch. This will be huge!

    • Kris

I’ve downloaded a few new apps and also using the Savings Catcher at Walmart for any purchases I get there. I’m not usually a Walmart shopper but glad I can save even more on the items I do buy there. I so hope I win, I’d use the IPAD for more savings.

    • Barbara

I am planning to shop Labor day sales to start stocking up on christmas gifts. I love bogo items additionally with my coupons-wow what a savings.

    • Brandi

Same as I have but also cut back eating our!!

    • freeman03

    • Betsy

I’m going to cut back on some things, and get more serious about couponing.

    • Jean

I have really cut back on spending, so I am going to increase my effort on couponing. Also this month I’m working Overtime to bring in more cash.

    • Ashlee Whitmire

My husband is a Marine so I have access to the gyms on base for free. Unfortunately we live 30 minutes away so instead of driving between 5-6 hours round trip a week I am going to workout at home and save on a lot of gas! This will also give me an extra 5-6 hours a week to do other things such as coupon.

    • paularowell

I’m going to eat from my stockpile to include all the vegetables I have canned this summer. Also all savings from coupons and rebates are going to be totaled and that amount moved to savings.

    • kellamoon

Checkout 51, Cartwheel, Kroger app and normal coupons.. and this website ofcourse!

    • Randy Elster

I’ve been away from couponing for about a year and just now jumping back in and having fun with it again!

    • DaMama

After the back-to-school is long gone, clearance sales help me stock up on school supplies and continue to dress my ever-growing offspring.

And Southern Savers = big savings with a minimum of time invested.

Shop for clearance sales! Use digital apps

    • Tina Gonzalez

I am price matching, using the Walmart.com/savingscatcher, Checkout 51, and buying when items are on sale and I have a coupon. I would love to win an ipad mini since I don’t have a smartphone. It would help me meet my Sept. savings goal since I could start using Ibotta and other mobile apps. :)

    • Booon

Digital coupons with paper coupons. Doubleing up where I can.

    • Betty B.

I’m going to look for coupons, sales ads, and mobile apps!

    • Jen Goodman

I’ve been saving up my Walmart White Cloud coupons so I can get toilet paper for less than 13 cents a roll! I also have my Target + MF coupons for the baby supplies I’ll need when my daughter comes in mid-September. And, my BJ’s membership rewards come in September, so “free” groceries!

    • Malone

I’m going to take your class in Charlotte, NC in September to try to get more organized and learn how to coupon effectively!

    • melissa

Save money, teach my 5 kids to use multiple coupons, use my apps and websites to shop smart and save money

    • Samantha

Let my teenager pick the items he wants me to buy from the sales papers (ie, this website), then match up the coupons and go shopping. He would never get as many things as I do, so if he picks the sales it’ll save me money!

    • l.a.

save $$ by not buying anything unless it’s on sale.

    • Linda

I’m going to continue using SS for all my grocery savings. Also going to add the Checkout 51 app for add’l savings.
      – Reducing our cell phone bills by using Ting Mobile (they also offer a trade-in phone program).
      – Calling and increasing the deductible on home and auto insurance.
      – Decluttering and selling all unused items on Craigslist and/or eBay and adding that to my emergency fund.
      – I am going to look into Zaycon for our meat purchases.
      – I will be using the extra funds from all the savings from living a more frugal yet rewarding lifestyle, and pay more to the principle of our home, but more importantly use the savings to continue to help others a little more.
Thanks so much for the opportunity to win such a great prize.
      ~ Good luck everyone!!

    • A.Carmichael

Glad to get the reminder about the Southern Savers App!!! Downloading that for sure!!! Will save by using my Phone for quicker searches while in the store, or to look up something I may have missed!! Thanks.

    • Tammyla

      Less impulse buying

    • cam

I am going to cut coupons and go to publix. I have not started back using coupons since i had baby boy… but it is time!!!!!

    • pdnr

I’m going to save by using up more of the food products I have stocked up on. I’m starting to run out of room and need to be more diligent about using what I already have.

    • Tanyalulu

I am going to only buy what my children NEED for fall clothes, instead of every cute thing I see.

    • Whitney

Moving to Florida where there are no state taxes, and then finding a home near Orlando where the property taxes are ridiculously cheaper than up north. Fact: The price of food is higher, the annual income is lower, the price of housing is lower, gasoline is cheaper, they don’t double coupons like we do up north, but they do price guarantee and have BOGO deals, and my family will save a lot of money by not continually buying winter apparel. I believe, September is going to be my saving grace month!

    • cennaka

I’m going to use more programming scripts to notify me about relevant deals. They have saved me a bunch of time and money already.

    • johnstka

Awesome give-away! I am planning on a no spend September with my husband. We won’t spend anything more than for the absolute necessities like bills, gas, and groceries. It helps us see what is important and use some creativity for dates and shenanigans.

My husband and I are winding down a no spend August. We saved ~$1100!!! We only bought milk, bread, and fresh produce. We had to eat from our pantry. No other spending – no eating out. I’m ready for any restaurant food! I haven’t walked into Target, walmart, etc. It was an adventure!

    • Mandi Coley Kessler

    • jacob C

Just discovered ebates! I know I’m late to the game..

    • Kristina

I definitely am going to continue to use Southern Savers to help me save as much as possible. I also am going to use the mobile app coupons more during September. Checkout51 has saved me about $20 so far and any little bit can help. I’ve got to admit that couponing for free items is what keeps me motivated. I love to donate to a women’s and children’s shelter in Columbia, SC so it’s nice to get any extra free items that I can.

    • Robin

I plan to organize my coupons better. I can’t take advantage of the great deals Jenny points out if I can’t find my coupons!

    • Monika Smith

Price matching at walmart always helps save a bunch of money :)

    • Mel

I’m buckling down on couponing and ibotta/Checkout 51 this month. I have been slacking over the summer.

    • Stephanie

In addition to organizing my coupons and staying in my budget for grocery and household items, I’ve started making meals ahead of time for the week. Finding fun crockpot recipes and other easy freezing cooking blogs enables me to use the bulk purchases I make with my coupons the best way possible!

    • Tiffany

I’m going to only buy from the sale list at the grocery store and also not order dominoes every time up don’t want to cook! Also I need to start doing the drug store shopping again. I had a nice little stock pile going so I haven’t needed to shop the drug stores however we are getting low on things.

    • Julia

Just got a $10 of $50 at Publix in the mail! That sure helps on top of sales and coupons! Love their gas card deals too!

    • mommalana

We will save money in Sept by shopping sales and using coupons.

    • Faith8539

    • Sarah Pope

I am planning to shop from my pantry and use what I have stocked in my chest freezer as well as sales flyers.

    • Sunset

Plan a vacation in September. It’s usually a lot cheaper to book a room in September rather than in the summer. Summer rates are much higher.

    • Heather M.

I’m going to make more of an effort to take my lunch and prepare meals on the weekends for the week ahead with food in the freezer and pantry. If I don’t need something, I am going to refrain from buying it since I’m fairly stocked up on everything.

    • Nic

Our family will not be eating out at all this month. No breakfast bagels, coffees or trips for froyo. It will be hard, but will make a huge impact.

    • Stephanie

I’m going to start using coupons again!

    • darcy

I plan to pay attention to the “crumbs”. While it is important to look
at the large amounts to really impact a budget, many people have already
done this. Money can be spent in small amounts without really thinking
about how much is being spent. I intend to pay attention to even the
      $1 for a McD’s iced tea.

    • hollyferrero

I already use Ibotta and Checkout 51.

    • Crystal Smythe Hall

I’m going to start keeping track of the little things..an extra $5 spent here and a $10 spent there add up! I want to try and keep up with what I’m spending the “extra” money on and see if I can save some money by planning ahead and using my coupons better!

    • Ellen

I plan to be more diligent in using Southern Savers and my apps to save every penny since I just lost my job!

    • HTaylor

I use SavingStar, grocery store eCoupons, TopCashback, eBates, printed manufacturer coupons, competitors’ coupons, etc. I am still in “old school” mode though because I don’t have a smartphone or data plan on my cell phone, so it would be great to own my very first tablet so I can download the savings apps!

    • Kimberly

I’m reworking our budget and plan on utilizing Southern Savers to cut back on my grocery bill using coupons and sales. I’m also using SavingStar.

    • katie

We are going to continue to coupon and cut or grocery budget.

    • peggy

I will use coupons and cook at home more and when I do cook at home I will cook enough for at least one more meal if not more.

    • cjk05mum

We plan to open a new checking account to transfer a set figure amount into each week for food–including all groceries and eating out. This is kinda like the cash method but with a debit card and dedicated account. Plus of course saving on those groceries with coupons!!

    • A. Thompson

More freezer/make ahead cooking so there’s less waste, and I’m going to try to do iBotta and coupon more. :)

    • Lauren

We plan to meal plan more (eat out less) and use what we already have in our pantry.

    • Tania S.

Eating out less, using coupons and try to remember to submit my receipts to iBotta and Checkout 51.

    • Elizabeth

Pantry raid! At least once a week I plan to cook from our pantry to cut down on what we buy. And continue to try to never pay full price for anything.

    • Liz

I’m freezing lots of meals in freezer bags that I can pop in the crock pot in the morning. We’ll work on eating some of the things I’ve had in the pantry for a while too and stop eating out!

    • Krisa03

No extra purchases. No dining our. No new clothes. Packing lunch for work. Couponing early and often!

    • Shaf

Thanks for the challenge, I love your website! I am using coupons and buying only what’s on sale, walking/biking more to save gas, and reviewing my budget for unnecessary expenditures.

    • Elizabeth

Using coupons, buying items on sale, eating out less. Thanks for the challenge!

    • Leigh Anne Borders

I am going to use Ibotta. I have heard alot about it and have even downloaded it. Now it is time to follow through!

    • Sasha

I’m going to only buy milk and produce. Our pantry is well stocked from a trip to Bjs, our farm order, and back to school cereal sales. Now I just need to bypass “good deals” because we don’t need anything.

    • Marcie

In September I plan on saving the same ways I’ve been saving since
finding this site. A couple years ago our family income was drastically
changed. Since then I have been grateful for all the help and guidance
given here for saving money! I have cut coupons from papers, printed
coupons, stacked Q’s, planned complicated lists taking advantage of
sales and bogos, stockpiled when the deals where good and used that
stock pile when the deals where lacking! Using the apps is the newest
strategy I have added, still trying to figure those out. Thanks Jenny for this site I love It!!

    • Angel Marie Johnson

Coupons, shopping sales, packing lunch, making meal plans.

    • PJ

I’m going to eat out of the pantry as much as possible and try only to eat out one time a week for just a little treat ($2 or less). Also I’m going to try to make the house more efficient to save on electricity.

    • JJ

My Sept. mantra – no sale no buy, no more impulse buys without coupons/sales.

    • pan_102

By using all the weapons in my arsenal that you’ve so generously provided.

    • alli

I plan to use more of my toiletries stockpile & just replace when it is very low…unless something is very cheap and of course I have a coupon haha :)

    • Tanya Roberts

I’ve been faithfully couponing for 4 years and I will continue. It’s hard to pay full price on anything at the store. I have triplets so saving is a must. It’s also been nice to help others when needed by simply going to my pantry. I don’t have or want a ridiculous stockpile. God blesses my family to much for me not to use my coupon skills to bless others!

    • Tamara

      We will save through:
      1. No eating out all month
      2. Saving on water, as example using the dish and cleaning water for flushing the toilett.
      3. More game nights instead of movie nights. Good family time and lower electricity bill!
      4. Using stockpile, just getting freebies all september, otherwise pass on.
      5. Walking to the playground instead driving. Saving gas, good exercise and enjoying the beginning of fall!
      6. Just buying in season produce on sale.

    • veronica

Continue to follow this awesome site and convince my husband to eat out less. So I’ll cook more meals, pack lunches, and eat from freezer.

    • Jennifer

      Coupons and sale!

    • Elena Istomina

I am going to shop sales and use coupons

Continue to follow your strategies while using Ibotta, Savingstar, and Checkout 51!!! I think combining as many offers as possible is the best way to save more!

    • RuthDB

I’m going to keep using your site to save on necessities. Coupling sales and Ibotta and Checkout 51 has really increased my savings. I love when the cashier marvels at how much money I am saving. The apps are bonuses on top of coupons and sales.

      • Mike Stege

        Count me in.

    • stacey

I am going to keep using your site to find the best deals! Southern Savers has saved me so much money and taught me so much. I really appreciate you guys! My newest way to save money is the Walmart Savings Catcher that I learned about from your site!! I saved $5 already just this week alone! Thanks Southern Savers I really appreciate all that you guys do!!

    • rl

I will cut back on my snacks.

    • james

I am going to use the new walmart savings catcher to save in the month of September and I am going to do all my yard work and no out to eat food boy that is going to be hard for my family. Thanks for all your tips and ways to save.

    • cheryl

I will only buy what is on sale and I have a coupon for. wish me luck!

I plan to buy less clothing and wear what I have in the closet.

    • s

I am going to buy on sale items and carpool.

    • em

saving money has became a way of life for me and using your website is how I really save. I hope to get some great coupons and some really great deals with southern savers this month to come.

    • cdhabolt

I am going to save money by only eating out once a month. Homemade meals are the best & cheapest way to eat when you have a big family :)

    • Meme007

Eating gluten-free has been a challenge due to the high prices for these items. So I decided to just leave off the gluten-free breads, cereals, etc. My grocery bill saw a huge cut and I am losing weight even more. I hope to use a tablet, etc in the future to streamline my shopping day.

    • Jennifer Cook

I’m going to cut down on eating out and continue using my coupons and saving as much money as I can

    • Melissa

I use all the apps and paper coupons.

    • Vanessa Collins Seward

I’ve always shopped to save money, but Couponing has become a way of life since having twins. I don’t see it no other way. I feel it’s they only way my family can survive. In September I plan to continue to shop as a frugal shopper and catch as many deals as I can. School has started and my daughter takes her lunch, so stockpiling on those lunchbox items is important.

    • Kim Kjerulf

I am going to cut down on eating eat by planning out my meals in advance. Also use coupons more often and consciously try not to buy anything but neccessities.

    • Tabitha Miller

I am going to only by necessities at the grocery store, which means not taking my children shopping with me :)

    • Barbara

I plan on eating out less often and baking more instead of buying store bought “goodies”

    • Kristin Schoolfield

I’m going to try some freezer/crock pot recipes and have them ready instead of having to come up with dinner last minute (which is usually more expensive)!

    • Claudia

I am going to shop only when there is a sale + I have coupons. :)

    • Susan

      read Southern Savers!

    • cher

I think I will try one app for saving money since I am getting confused with all the apps and not getting the savings potential. I will try Savings Star. I have cut out soda completely and that has helped my grocery bill. I can usually get 6-8 meals off beans or 2 chicken breasts with a little creative cooking. I need to stick to one store too. I noticed my grocery allowance gets higher if I shop the sales at more than o store.

    • Gloria

I would use the IPad mini to get online myself to use Jenny’s site to find the great deals so my daughter doesn’t have to do it for me. ;)

    • Cyndimac

I didn’t realize SS had an app! I am going to download it asap! I’d loving having my lists on my phone! Thanks!

    • Kerstin

I am trying to eat out less and I may try a meal plan for the first time ever.

    • nc_sunshine

I’m finding free events like movies at the local library with our toddler, and using the Attractions coupon book, and using your DIY date night ideas for inspiration. :-)

    • Samantha Lloren Murphy

I’ve started making my own makeup remover, toner, etc instead of buying ones in the store to save money. I’m going to attempt to make my own wool wash & lanolin spray for our cloth diapers as well vs buying them. I also plan to use the Kroger e-coupons on their app more often, as well as always checking the Cartwheel app while in Target!

    • Ashley

I’m going to keep doing what I do. We have lived on a limited income for years and both my husband and I are naturally frugal. Maybe I should share in September and give more!

    • Ellie

In September, I plan to be more diligent making my list of sale items and coupons that coincide! I love saving money, as most people do! I will check out the apps you mentioned above, also. Thank you for your website and all the amazing info you give us!!!

    • Katerina

Eat out less & stick to meal planning & eating leftovers for lunch.

    • Connieb03

I use all the ways mentioned above to save money all the time!!!

    • Meg’s

I’m going to be better about meal planning what I coupon & using my stock pile

    • Erin

I just started couponing this year as a stay-at-home mom, so I plan to keep up with the SS website (as I always do!) to seek out deals on groceries, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. Thanks to coupons and this website, I practically have a years worth of shampoo I got for practically nothing! Also, I am hosting a shower for a friend next month, and in order to make it affordable (yet lovely!) I hope to do a lot of DIY projects from my Pinterest boards – actually making things instead of merely pinning them – which is what I am more often prone to do!! :-)

    • Geitania

To do more meal planning and eating out less. Thanks for all you do! Love the SS app too!

    • Natalie

My daily check on deals from apps and websites – including Southern Savers! (Thanks for keeping me in the money-saving loop!) I work at a library, so I frequently take advantage of those freebies. ????

    • Lorrie

I’m back to putting the time in to find and redeem the deals . I haven’t downloaded the SS app yet… I have only used it at home on the computer. If I have it on my phone, I can use a lunch hour at work to handle some of the work and make my weekends a lot easier!

    • Ana

I’ll try some of these apps! And I plan to make better use of fresh produce!

    • Ven

I want to try more healthier meals for my kids for lunch boxes.

    • mary

Only buying what we need and cooking more. I may miss a deal or two but I’ll still have the money in my pocket. Remember: it’s not a deal if you don’t really need or use it. I use the Savingstar app and use the savings for Amazon giftcards. Which I can use for birthdays (in November) and Christmas!

    • amy w

I’m stocked up on coupons and have both cvs up coupons and riteaid wellness plus rewards to use up plus gas gift cards both free from previous deals via cvs and riteaid plus purchased at Kroger. Really only need to keep up with my stockpile to replace what I’ve used.

    • Amanda G

Cancelled cable and trying to not online shop as much.

    • Crystal Hicks

I recently learned that I’m expecting our first baby next spring! I’m so excited to stock up on baby necessities and save money at the same time. We will be meal planning, eating out of the pantry and freezer. I will also have to cut out random trips to Target, etc :). I’m also going to give our insurance companies a call to see if I can save on our home or car insurance. It won’t be an immediate savings for the month, but more long term.

    • deanna hanson

I’m going to only buy what I need, not what is on sale and seems good at the time. :)

    • Bbyrdlav

      Using more Apps! :-)

    • Cindy

I think one of my best ways to save is not to go to the stores as much. :) Also, to stick to my list and not “look around” to see what other good deals I can find.

We are going to continue to coupon and use our favorite apps, plan more meals, eat out only twice this month, and use some of those gift cards from last Christmas/birthdays and rebate gift cards I’ve been holding on to – or keep forgetting about (not sure everyone would consider this savings, but it will be like eating out of my pantry/stockpile with more ending up in my bank account).

    • avogel

I’ll continue to use coupons and store circulars to compare and find the best prices in my area; I’ve also recently started using target’s price match policy.

    • sheold

I have to save as much a possible, will be using the walmart savings catcher, coupons, upromise and more. I can’t use some of the apps above because with four children, one in college, two seniors and one in seventh grade I can’t afford a fancy phone right now, LOL. So needless to say a new Ipad mini would be a blessing. Love this web site and all the help it provides me to help keep my budget in line.

    • Laura

I try to save every way possible. I love to save especially when there are so many ways to save besides clipping coupons. I just started to use apps and will continue to combine coupons to save more money. I’ll continue my daily check in with Southern Savers, for I get great tips and save even more!

    • Beth

I’m going to try using the mobile apps you discussed.

    • Victoria Bobrow

I am going to start using all of my apps to save money. I sometimes forget to check one or two of them when I am in a hurry. I would use this iPad in my preschool classroom for learning activities, I’ve been saving my extra money but still not there yet!

    • Susie Johnson

I”m going to get my coupons back in shape (throw out all the expired inserts) and get back to shopping each week! I got out of sync during the summer and my grocery bill went WAY up :( Couponing really works!

    • Georginna Quiros

I am going to stockpile coupons and purchase newspaper inserts to start saving big! My goal is to have a well stocked pantry that can last me 2-3 months by the end of this year.

Buy only necessities. Take advantage of sales-with-coupons deals in the grocery store. Work menus around store sales. Take stock of what I already have in the pantry, and make meals out of what I have before buying more. Set aside the amount I want to save in a second account ahead of time so that it is not sitting there in the checking account asking to be spent. Make ahead and freeze meals now in order to reduce the temptation to eat out on difficult days.

    • Kwistol Klear

We have a tight budget as it is with another baby on the way, so the only wiggle room I have to save is on the grocery bill. I’m really having to think outside my comfort zone…. Using soups to make casseroles….. using a lot of my pantry items…. Instead of using canned beans, cook the dried beans, freeze portions to use in chili…. Also making sure not to “waste” by throwing out leftovers. So dinner leftovers are lunch the next day, oh and the obvious….don’t eat out!

    • Johanita Smit Rose

Live with in my means, and I already took my credit cards out of my wallet. When you get them you believe that you can control them, but in the end… they control you…

Aside from really focusing on structured couponing (which I’ve really gotten away from since starting grad school), I want to learn to do drugstores. I’ve only dabbled slightly in cvs’ing but I think is could really save $$ with it if I tried! Thanks!

    • Tammy

I’m focusing more the Checkout 51 offers and using swagbucks to print my first round of coupons weekly.

    • lyndsay

I am going to start focusing on couponing again and shopping at the Farmer’s market. It was a busy summer and I kind of stopped for a bit.

    • Stephanie

I am going to diversify my shopping trips to include more than just one
store with the best deals…like including drugstores to get great deals
on paper, cleaning, and toiletry products. I’m going to build my
stockpile on free or nearly free items that are normally high ticket
items again so that I am not caught in the lurch having to pay full
retail for those items when I run out!

    • Taylor Davids

In September, I’m going to get back to couponing! I am going to check Southern Savers every day, multiple times a day to get the best deals! I’m also going to go to one of the SS workshops to learn more! We have also cut out our cable, and with football season here-I can watch the games free online! Also, with the cool nights coming up, we cut our air down at night to save on the electric bill! College is expensive, but it can be better!!!

    • Kimberly Cash

I used coupons for years. My aunt taught me how coupon about 4 years ago and we would always go together. About 3 months ago she passed away. I have not been back couponing since. I plan this month to get back on track as I know my aunt would want me to. A tablet would make this so much easier as I still use an old bulky desktop for my coupons right now.

I plan on doing that by eating at home more, packing my husband’s lunch, cutting online coupons, following Southern Savers religiously (of course), and getting together with other couponers. I’ve also downloaded Ibotta, Checkout 51 and other apps like that. Thanks for everything you do! (PS: Not trying to suck up. lol).

I have set a strict food budget for September, so everything that I purchase this month will be based on my “saved lists” from Southern Savers. I have already downloaded Ibotta, Checkout 51, & Savingstar to help me stay within my goals. Thanks Jenny!

    • Chandalee

Sell used homeschool curriculum and cut back on eating out.

    • Jackie

There are lots of ways that I plan on saving money in September. Not only will I purchase items that I can stack with coupons, but I will also purchase items that are featured on Ibotta and Checkout51. Lately I’ve used a new app, Receipt Hog, where I can scan and receipt and receive points that can be exchanged for gift cards. I’m saving all of the gift cards that I get from checkout51, Ibotta, and Receipt hog for Christmas shopping and presents. I love saving and making money with apps! =)

    • havennh

I recently signed up for savingstar.com and upromise. I have used southernsavers.com for a while matching printable coupons with grocery lists, but I haven’t tried these electronic savings before. I am excited to see how it works, and how much more money we save.

    • lumbergurlnc

We have decided to start cooking meals instead of eating out. This includes not stopping at gas stations/etc for snacks/drinks. We organized our deep freezer last night and pulled out meat to thaw for meals this upcoming week. I already try to only purchase items that are great deals with coupons & savings apps. With a 13 yr old & a 2yr old….saving money is a MUST! We have learned to not rely on certain brand names – it’s all about getting the most out of our $. Even my hubby packed his lunch & took with him to work the past 2 days (now if I could get him to just stop smoking…LOL).

Gotta start somewhere….and not eating out is a big step in the right direction!
Thanks for all you do Jenny! Without Southern Savers, I would not be able to save as much as I have already. I check your page daily. We all appreciate you :)

    • Meyer Couponers

    • Todbcave

I check out southern savers before going to any store. I already use a few of the apps suggested here but just learned of a new one. Thanks. I also want to suggest one that I found that is so easy to use and can save you a little extra when shopping at Walmart. The app is Walmart savings catcher. You shop and after checkout you scan your receipt. The app searches all nearby stores in your community for lower prices. After 3 days of searching it will come back and alert you of the lower deals and give you a refund of the differences. You can build up your refunds and then request your money at any time. Saves time having to do comparing competitor pricing before going to walmart for price matching deals. Hope you find it saves you some cash like it has for me. :-)

It’s hard to save this month, because we are moving! But one important thing we are committed to doing: we are eating up our stockpile instead of eating out or buying new groceries that we would likely have to throw away when the big van comes to take our stuff away….

    • Leslie

Focus more on buying what I need to build my food stock pile and less on things I have plenty of already. Even if it’s a super good deal, unless it’s free or money maker. Then whatever coupons I don’t want, give to my friends so they can save as well.

I’ve watched a millin YouTube vids, checked out countless websites, clipped my coupons for the week, and now I’m ready for my first couponing experience! I plan to save money this month by using the coupons from the Sunday paper, printing out valuable coupons from reputable sites, and using the mobile apps on my phone to get more savings. I also have customer reward cards for every place I shop in order to get the most out of my shopping experiences.

    • Chanda

Now that school is back in session and the days are a little more scheduled, I am going to try again to thoughtfully plan my family’s meals for the week. The difference this go-around is that I’ve got a stocked pantry to work from (thanks Southern Savers!) and no excuse for not having meal ideas or wasting food because I cook more than I need to. I am also hoping to find some creative new ways to use those pantry items and leftovers in the kids’ school lunches and snacks.

    • Miranda

I recently left the workforce and plan to hit couponing hard this month to help save money. I found a great app where you can store all your store cards so they are always at the ready! In addition you can scan an item to find the lowest price around. I will be checking Southern Savers religiously for great deals to help stretch the dollar!! My binder is ready and a fesh ink cartridge for printing!

    • Erica

I love using your website on how to find awsome deals. Now that both of my kids are in school, I will have more time to spend searching for deals.

We always have my coupons with us and refer to my apps for all kinds of savings. I use ibotta, checkout51, savingsstar, cartwheel, walmart savings catcher, shopmium, shopkick, checkpoints, receipt hog, viggle, amazon, southernsavers, shopyourway, living social & groupon. (I feel like i am missing some!) Any app that can help us save money or earn points towards gift cards etc. we give it a try. I even have my husband using most of the same apps & websites for all his shopping. sometimes I think he enjoys it more than I do. We plan every shopping trip out and if we think we have found a deal in the store we both pull out our phones and start searching. No more impulse buying for us. I started with SouthernSavers.com and anything you recommend I will give it a try. And when I am asked about couponing and how to get started, I refer everyone to you. Its the best for beginners, experienced and everyone in between! We <3 SouthernSavers.com

Planning to finally learn to use online apps – Cartwheel, Walgreen’s “paperless coupons”, ibotta, etc. These are (for me) tough to track. Expiration dates, stack-ability, need to scan phone…? I’m sure it’ll be worth it. Printed and printable ones sure are!

Hi Jenny! If I were to win the iPad mini, I would finally have a device to use for myself for shopping/saving, instead of sharing. I would put together a proper budget by entering everything I buy to see where I can cut costs. I can finally use the Southern Savings mobile lists and IBOTTA!! In September, I want to try to use every means I’ve seen to save $250! After my use, I would let my 10 yr old son use it, first to see if he can write better with it. He has High Functioning Autism, and studies have shown that they really help kids engage and stay focused. Hope to win! Thanks Jenny

    • Teresa Rodriguez

We will be saving more now thatI learned to truely coupon with the Southern Savers youtube videos and app. Also by eating out only on family sunday, paying bills on time to avoid late fees (they add up), paying out early on lease to own t.v. and put away money that could have been a payment instead of spending it, setting a weekly budget, planning healthy meals from what is available on sale, not buy more than necessary, make breakfast for husband and pack him lunch, using up everything in fridge instead of buying more and letting anything else go to waste and by using all apps to make a dollar go further. Due to being down to 1 income due to high risk/gestational diabetes pregnancy I have had to learn to budget wisely and now even more with my 4 month old on expensive formula due to milk protein/soy allergy and breathing condition and that’s where couponing came in and loving every second of it! But I save the most helping others save as well :) Good luck to all and God Bless!

In order to balance out the costs and not to go over budget we drop our grocery budget by 25.00 a week and do not buy anything but the staples (milk, bread, shampoo) without a coupon. I also take advantage of the clearance deals from all the let over back to school products. :)

    • Beth

I am going to start using coupons combined with Sales every week (before I would either get busy, or lazy or so and was using coupons/sales once a month or so). But Every time I do, I realize how much can I save with some effort. I plan to be a regular savings shopper. SouthernSavers have always and will help me in keeping up my goal. Thank you.

    • Amanda Hasty Hutto

I plan on dedicating more time to coupons and sales planning. Your site has helped me so much already! Thanks for what you do! My family sure would enjoy that iPad ;)

    • Stephanie

I plan to save by actually sticking to our budget. I already shop only on sales and use coupons when I can, but sometimes we still go over. Usually the culprit is purchases we could have done without.

    • Elizabeth C

Using more coupons and buy only what I need.

    • Susiexia12

      Only buying what I need

    • Denise G

I already use Checkout 51, Ibotta, etc. but still want to maximize my savings. By combining the daily savings tips emailed to me by SS, making my own baby food, eating at home, and buying only things we need, I should be able to meet my savings goal this month!

    • Donna

    • Anne Knox

I use coupons and try to get them doubled as much as possible for maximum savings! Sometimes, products will be on sale and is a great deal, even w/o coupons! I use Ibotta, Savings Star, Checkout 51, Jingit & Shopmium for a little bit more of a savings. I don’t use coupons just for the thrill of saving money… that can be an expensive mistake in the long run…. I will only buy what I think I can use or give to my family members if its free or a low price. My daughter comes home from college about once a month, and she will grab food for her apartment, from my pantry and this saves her money (because she gets it free!). I try to shop at the dollar tree when I buy bread, because I can get it for cheaper than anywhere else. I don’t make trips to the store unless its on my way to going somewhere else.I try to keep my coupons either with me in the car, so If I am in a store and I see a good sale, I have my coupons handy to save even more. I use coupon matchups with Southern Savers and other sites and this gives me enormous savings! It pays for me to save 25 cents here, 50 cents there there, and it helps me all throughout the year.

    • dana

      coupons and southernsavers

    • Ann

Before this challenge was introduced I have been reading and watching videos on southern savers about couponing. I decided this was something I wanted to do to save some money for my family. For this challenge I plan to be more organized, plan my meals from the pantry and fridge first, just buy what is on sale and also to refrain from “buying stuff”, yes the unnecessary things that I think we need. I have set myself a goal of November to be more savvy with the couponing which is further than this September challenge, however, I think this challenge will be an added push for me to get to my goal

    • Melia

To save money in September, I have really been trying to use all of the resources available to me. Southern Savers info, paper coupons, printable coupons stacked with store coupons, cartwheel, mobile coupons and apps. It’s a lot to keep up with but well worth it in the end!

    • amy mayer

my usual: coupons, follow ads and match using Sounthernsavers.com!

    • Janet S

I have watched videos of different people couponing and visited many sites and all seem helpful but the one that is easy to use is southern savers. Everything is easy to understand with no problem. The database does an amazing job locating coupons for products I want to buy. So I will continue using southern savers and continue watching your videos so I app an save more money than I do. An one more thing, I will expand on my stock pile because it needs to accumulate more items I used often.

    • c

I am going to coupon more this month.

    • en

September I am going to get this in order starting with my coupons and store discount cards.

    • Carol

I plan to save money in September by getting back on track with couponing. Over the last several months, I have gotten distracted and become very inconsistent. I have continued to collect coupons, but haven’t been organized or consistent in my efforts. This is my month to get back on track. Thanks for your great and so helpful website.

    • Faith

Using the mobile apps more often.

    • OLee

The apps help me get discounts that I do not have coupons for!!! Love ’em

    • gamego71

I am going to read Southern Savers Daily and pick at least one food bargain to go get per week. I have gotten away from clipping coupons but I can still save a lot of money if I will remember to check the best prices, especially on meat, at my local stores!

    • I’m going to save in September by using SavingStar more. I have already entered my savings cards from Walgreens, Food Lion, etc. All I have to do is check for the items I plan to buy and shop. My savings have added up over the past month and I plan to increase it this month. I also plan to keep using all the tools available to me such as Checkout 51 and Receipt Hog. I really love couponing and saving money!!!!!

    • Ricky Lee Collins

Coupons, ibotta, and the cartwheel app from target :)

    • Amy Tobyansen

I’m going to save more in September by using Southern Savers more often and keeping track with all the good deals. Also start using some of these mobile apps that I was not aware of. :)

    • Sasha

I would like to try out mobile coupons to save $, and also work on following a budget more closely!

    • Alexa Aviles

Good morning, I am going to save on September, by continuing to use Ibotta, Savings star, Checkout 51. I am slowly but surely building up those funds. I will continue to use Southern Savers to figure out what is out there and what I need to buy. With my twins at home it has gotten a lot harder to do this, but I still manage to snag a couple good deals here and there. I have had a good start on saving this month. I have bought Huggies diapers and Formula for about 50% of retail in publix. I have also gotten free bananas. The total savings I have is about $200 in this one shopping trip for formula and diapers. This will keep me for about a month. I have also been saving with my managers specials at my local krogers, especially on meat and produce. I am going to download the Southern savers app. I did not know that it was available. So I will continue this journey with all the online apps such as Ibotta, Savings star, Checkout 51, southern savers.

    • Maggie Jellinek

I would love to save money on a car. I am doing lots of rebates this month. I am trying to delve back into couponing after a hiatus.

    • Becky A

After a whole 3 days so far this month, I realized my plan of attack has to change. We went ahead and put half of our extra savings goal into our savings account to pretend it doesn’t exist and force us to find ways to live without it. Then when we get paid again, we will put the second half in savings. We may need to get new brakes for one of our vehicles this month, so this “savings” may just go to that, but at least we won’t have to tap into any other accounts to pay for them!

    • sarah mack

I’m committing myself to start couponing again and making a family budget!

    • Ash Johnson

I’d love to meal plan more. I usually end up throwing away a bunch of food that’s gone bad.

    • Paula Bennison Ollis

First off I would like to thank you for all the advice and help that you give everyone with this website. It has really made a difference in helping us with couponing. I am lucky that I have gotten my husband interested in couponing also when he realized just how much money you could save by doing so. He has helped me get out coupons in an organizer to help us with our shopping trips. He actually wanted a binder for himself so we are in the process of making that which will help us in our shopping trips. We have found that 2 stores that we can save the most at are Kroger and Harris Teeter. Neither of those stores are in our town so we go every other week and visit the one with the best sales because of the coupon values they will double. Since there is a limit to the coupons they double, he has the limit and I have the limit so we can maximize our savings. Along with that we both have our store cards loaded with the e-coupons to add extra savings. I also use Ibotta, SavingsStar, Check51 to receive the additional savings. One good example of the benefits of using the e-coupons along with manufacturer coupons is one our shopping trip to Harris Teeter yesterday I had a e-coupon for Tide with Oxy booster and also the manufacturer coupon. It was on sale for $9.49 less the e-coupon of $4.00 and the manufacturer coupon for $4.00 which left me only paying $1.49. Having an Ipad would allow us to have our shopping list with the coupons listed and be able to tweak it as we go to have the best savings outcome. We both have some health issues that take a toll on us financially so couponing really has made us so much more aware of how important saving money really is.

    • Debbie Whisenant Nunn

I will try out one of the suggested apps to save.

    • Jen

I am going to try to use the sales items more (especially meat) when I plan my meals. I have been asking what my family what they would like to have for the week and buying what they ask for. I have an upright freezer so I am going to buy more meat when it is on sale and then give them a choice of what I already have and make them pick from that.

    • Josh

use it with my new job

    • Josh

I’ll try those apps you suggested.

    • Judi Henderson

I am going to keep track of my savings which should inspire me to save more. The money will go toward a new sofa!

    • maehingo

I would use Ibotta and Checkout 51 :-)

    • Katie

I love your site! I have recently gone back to school to pursue my Master’s degree in Instructional Technology and am no longer working full time. My husband is a teacher, so money is tight! These are some great ideas to help us manage this year.

    • Blessedmommyof3

The key to saving money is making and list and sticking to
it, especially when grocery shopping. Buying what you NEED and not making impulse purchases can also make a difference. Of course, Southern Savers is a great tool when it comes to saving money and offers great insights on apps, deal ideas, and coupons to add to your normal routine. When using coupons, it’s always a good idea to compare prices between brands to make sure that you are getting the best deal. Just because you have a coupon it doesn’t mean that you are maximizing your savings by using it, especially when a different brand could be cheaper to purchase…so pay attention to prices! Also, SAVE, SAVE, SAVE! Don’t use credit cards if you have money to pay for what you need. Always try to set aside even a small amount every pay period if possible, and forget that it is there. Before you know it, you will have a nest egg set aside for those emergencies that arise and you will be secure enough to not have to use credit or borrow money.
These are just some simple things that we live by in my household and it works! So, this is how I will save for September and every other month moving forward.

    • KCook

I use ibotta and southernsavers but I’m going to get checkout 51

    • Tiffany Tyler

My best friend and I coupon together. It makes saving more fun and we help each other. She may see a deal that I didn’t know about and vise versa. I use Ibotta and Checkout 51. I use Southern Savers to look for deals. If it’s free or darn near free, I’m buying it whether I need it right now or not. On the things I need, I look for coupons before I go shopping and we price match at Wal-Mart. We are saving a lot of money and we appreciate your help in doing so Jenny! Have a blessed day!

    • Aubrey

I use Southern Savers every day and SavingStar every time I go grocery shopping!

    • Dana S

    • Dawn T

I am going to put forth the effort to meal plan and use up many of the staples in the pantry and freezer. And, when I go to replace those items, I will wait for sales and coupon match ups! An iPad would be a great tool for success!

    • Wanda

I am going to use every money saving app that I can find!

    • Sue Lercher Mellor Slater

I am a newbie and my very first time a few weeks ago I actually saved big time at Publix a little over $108. I am hooked! I even went and installed Southern Savers and checkout 51 and some other coupon apps on my phone, I look at them MORE now than I do at Facebook! I LOVE doing this! The extras that I will have in my stock pile will be going to my local homeless collation, I believe in giving back to the community. I am so glad I started doing this! Thank you for having such a WONDERFUL site!!!

    • steph

use my birthday freebies and discounts :)

    • Britt

Now that I’ve revamped my budget, I plan to get back to consistent couponing with the help of southersavers and all the money saving apps on my phone. Hopefully, this will lead to better meal planning and less wasted food. I also plan to focus on buying things I need and not all the things I want.

    • Amy Adams Major

    • Amanda

Use deals I find on southern savers. Match my coupons to deals that are going on at local stores.

    • Kim L

The kids are back in school so I can really start focusing on couponing more and finding those great deals. Sometimes the time goes by so fast and you don’t have time to get the great deals you really want. I am hoping to really catch up and stock my pantry up in the coming months. I would love to win an ipad too.

    • Margaret

I always start with Southern Savers as my road map to savings. September starts my calculations for school year savings.

    • Paula

I just want to thank you for all you do to help save each of us

    • I typed in my comment, made me sign in and it erased it. Bottom line: have no app available device to use, no printer, go to library to print if coupon given me without having to install software. Couldn’t you make it easier??? Have wireless at home with laptop to use FB,email, etc. Could sure use an IPAD… :-)

    • April

    • I’m going to continue couponing and try to start a coupon-swapping group at my church.

    • Jaime C

I honestly couldn’t Save in September, or any other month, w/out Southern Savers – it’s my go to website each week to determine what I’ll be buying and where I’ll be shopping. Thank you for giving us the guidance, and showing me how to save money for my family. **Here’s to many more years of success to Southern Savers, while you continue helping other families save too!**

    • Hope

    • disqus_B8fpY1dtGZ

Saved for many years, coupons, rebates. I check all on Southern Savers. With all this saving I made a down payment on a car years ago. (sewing everything except jeans) this allowed me to choose the best for my family for fruit, vegetables etc. I am using coupons since it started. I like Southern Savers because they have everything compacted on the site, and I can choose the best of the best.
      Thank you “Southern Savers”

    • Felicia

    • jbwphoto1

My new saving techniques will involve my husband for the first time. He’s disabled and home while I work, so he has an “extra” 40 hours plus more than I do every week. I’m teaching him how to navigate through Southern Savers and print the coupons. We’ve also just started working on our price book. Once I list the items I buy, my husband can then start going through the ads filling in the info.

    • djdurwin

I have been couponing for a few years now. This month I started using the new Savings Catcher Program at Walmart. Just another way to save money!

    • Judy

I am going to save money by using coupons and shopping sales

    • Coots

I’m going to save money by shopping for groceries only once this week, instead of making several trips to the store. This will not only save on gas costs, but it will enforce that I plan my week of meals efficiently and not purchase unnecessary items.

      Start couponing again to save

I have been an avid Southern Savers user for 3-4 yrs now. I would be lost in the shopping world without this site! I’ve, also, recommended your site to several others. I would love to be able to use the iPad Mini to be more “mobile” and efficient! There have been several times when I’ve wished I could check things on Southern Savers and Savings Star while I am shopping. September would be a GREAT time to start being a better couponer with that new iPad!

    • wendyof

I am going to coupon, look for deals and use cash back programs! Now that summer vacations are over and school is back in full swing, it’s time to get back to saving money!

    • Vanessa Siren

Oh my gosh I didn’t know about your app!!! I will be better at saving money in September, clipping my coupons on Sunday (instead of putting them off 2 or 3 weeks-then missing the fun deals) and using my phone to my advantage!!! I don’t have a tablet, and I can only see an Ipad helping me even more into this challenge!!! we have moved from FL to AZ 4 years ago but I still use Southern Savers and it applies so much to tons of stores around here!!! thanks!

I am about to be medically separated from the Marines and I started to research how I will support my family of 4. I came across your YouTube Video 101 and I am determined to get this coupon chapter of my life rolling. I plan to use everything your site has to offer to cut my $450+ / Month grocery bill down by half! I will make my grocery list / meals from all sales ads. Thanks for an awesome Site!

I already use ibotta and southern savers which save me a bundle, but I also intend to use the shopkick app to get points for gift cards for just walking into stores. It’a pretty neat!

I will never quit couponing or at least only buying grocery items on sale. I definitely plan on more ‘freezer cooking’. I’m also decluttering room by room and selling items and putting any extra money into an emergency fund and/or a Roth 401K.

i plan to use SavingStar and use more store coupons.

I always coupon, but I’m also looking for more meat deals, my local store does 25% off sometimes on meats that might have a sell by in the next few days, so we just freeze and when we are ready eat them. I also take advantage of ibotta, checkout51 and savingstar! Love that I can use coupons and some apps to help save even more money!

Where are the winners announced? I can’t seem to find the winner for this ipad or for the amazon giftcard. Thanks!

I will keep using coupons and coupon codes to save while shopping in the stores and online.
