Getting a Bigger Paper

Every weekend there are big variations in the newspaper insert coupons and I always try to encourage you to get the biggest paper available to you.  Newspaper publishers are cutting costs though by decreasing delivery areas which makes it harder for many of us to find bigger papers.

Here are some ideas:

  • Try local bookstores or  Books-A-Million, Barnes & Nobles etc.  Most carry large papers on Sundays that are intact with all ads and inserts.  Talk to your store manager and ask them to order more if needed.
  • Check at your Grocery stores.  Many carry the biggest paper for your state on Sunday’s.
  • Find a local newsstand (if you live near the airport check their newsstands too).
  • Call a Relative that lives in those cities and pay them to mail you the inserts.  They only need to mail them every other week or every 3 weeks.

For anyone in Columbia SC – We have a newsstand here, off St. Andrews Rd, that gets the Charlotte Observer!!  They personally drive to Charlotte to get these so you will need to call by Friday at noon to reserve your copy for that Sunday.  They do charge a little more than the paper costs,$3.29 ea, to cover their delivery time and costs.  Call 798-6000 to reserve a copy.  You can reserve as many copies as you like!

**If you wanted to try this out – I highly recommend this weekend.  Not only are there 3 inserts but “The State” will cost $3 this weekend due to special insert they are putting in about football.  This makes the Charlotte paper almost the same cost!!**

Atlanta Readers – Don’t forget that you have a coupon every weekend to save $1 off the cost of your paper.  It is good at Kroger or Publix.  This coupon resets every week.

      I actually have to go to the Kroger here before church every Sunday in order to get the best paper. If I wait until we get home – they are gone. So Sunday mornings, – CVS, Riteaid, & Krogers & then church – otherwise – no deals. Wish it wasn’t this way.

      I live in Lex, SC and normally get the STATE, so does the Charlotte Observer offer more coupons? Are they the same as the state plus some, or would I need to get both? I noticed I can have the Charlotte Observer mailed to me for $2.50, what does a Sun. issue go for at St. Andrews?

      I have been getting the AJC in Atlanta at Publix and it is only $0.85 with the AJC coupon. I’m not sure if they reduce the price after the morning or what, but I always get it for $1.85 (and then minus the $1 coupon= $0.85). I usually go around noon or so.

      Check before having any newspaper mail editions. Most take out all ads and coupons and I’m fairly certain the Observer does this too.

      The newsstand charges $3.29 ea.

      I live in a county in GA the doesn’t receive delivery of the AJC. I am part of a group of girls that takes turn driving to the closet delivery area. With 5 people in my group, I only have to do it once every 5 weeks!

      For those who get the AJC – on Sundays Publix will stack two papers together for one price of $2.38, if you use the $1 off q, you will get twice the inserts for what you would pay for normally one paper. HTH!

      Where is the coupon in the AJC? I usually buy the double papers on Sunday morning for $2.50. Can you use multiple $1 coupons?

      I bought my AJC at Rite Aid two weeks ago not thinking it made a difference where I picked it up. I did have my two coupon inserts and a Kroger circular, but that was all. No Target ad, no drugstore ads, no Michaels ad…

      My sister picked up the paper from a street vendor the same day and it was complete.

      A good example here in Greenville is The Greenville News does not get as many coupons as the “bigger” Charlotte Observer. But with me being able to buy the Greenville News for 88 cents at Walgreens, and still getting MOST of the same coupons, I can’t really complain. Not worth hunting a newstand and spending more for the CO to me.

      If anyone is in the North Myrtle Beach area you can get a Charlotte Observer at IHOP in NMB and also at the Kangeroo on Hwy 9. Charlotte is a level 4 paper and has better coupons in it. (ie. higher coupons amounts and lot of times more coupons)

      No sorry. You can get The State anywhere you like they all have the same coupons. This is really if you are wanting a bigger paper than The State.

      Does anyone know if there is a “bigger” paper is available in the Charleston, SC area. I’ve looked almost everywhere with no luck! I think that the Post & Courier carries only a fraction of the Sunday coupons.

      It’s a Kroger coupon but you can use it at Publix. If anyone at Publix says it’s a copy & can’t take it, just tell them you got it off of the AJC website. (I once had a manager say that they don’t take copies. I just explained that I got it off the AJC website and he was super nice and said then of course he could honor it.)

      I imagine that you could use two coupons. I only buy one and they still take off the $1 from the coupon even though I get the $2.00 paper at the $1.85 price.

      I have checked the Barnes and Nobles and Books A Million in Charleston and they do not carry The State. I hadn’t thought about the airport, though, and might check that out this weekend. Other than that, I think the closest you can get it is at various locations in Santee. If you go to The State website, it gives you locations and addresses of where you can purchase it.

      I live in Charleston as well and I called “the State” paper and they said the closest place to get it was in Bonneau in a gas station off I-26 exit. They would not let me get a subscription either but I haven’t tried Barnes & Nobles. Let me know if you have any success

      A great place to get the newspaper is The Dollar Tree or some other dollar store. The Sunday paper is only $1.00!!! and it has all the inserts!!

      I live in South East Tennessee – after watching the information about what was available in the Sunday papers by region, I discovered the ugly truth. The papers for Knoxville, TN and Huntsville, AL usually have the full list of coupons available – minus a few here and there. My paper – Chattanooga Times Free Press is short MANY of them. So – when I know it’s going to be a big coupon weekend – ROAD TRIP!! I don’t know many people that coupon – so they all think I am nuts to drive for a newspaper…

      Tiffany, I learned that too! The Chattanooga Times paper is always missing coupons! And if I purchase from 2 different locations I get 2 different sets of inserts – it is quite frustrating. Does someone know if anywhere near Chattanooga sells the AJC?

      I live in TN and noticed that the Knoxville Sentinal wasn’t available in this area. I called them and they emailed me the locations in our city that they are available. It’s hard to get because there are less then 200 between all the locations in town so I always call to hold one or two and one of the locations.

      In Montgomery, AL, go to Books a Million on the Bypass (Eastchase doesn’t carry them that I know of) and you can get the Birmingham paper. That is the only place I have been able to find it so far.

      I checked the ILM gift shop they said they did not carry the other newspapers. Barns and nobel do carry the Reilgh Observer.

      For the last month of so my parents have been purchasing the Greenville News (for the TV section) and the Spartanburg Herald Journal. The SHJ actually has more coupons in it, and the Greenville News is always missing at least one of the packs.

      Anyone know if Savannah, GA carries a larger paper than the Savannah Morning News? I have asked Barnes & Noble @ AJC and they don’t get it. I can’t find the Georgia Times Union anywhere near Savannah. Although, I have not called the airport.

      I also just order my inserts from a clipping service if I miss the paper or need more than I can get my hands on.

      The AJC coupon is a Kroger Coupon, Publix rings it up as a competitor coupon (so they are eating the $1); plus the coupon specifically says one per transaction; and, the two papers ring up under one barcode for $2.38. So technically, you really should only be able to use 1 coupon per double paper. But you can look at it this way, if the single paper is $1.85, by buying 2 and using 2 q, you are paying 0.32 more than just using 1 q and buying the double which comes to 1.38 for two..
      wow that was a mouthful :)HTH BTW, I have been known to buy 2 or 3 doubles at a time and use that same number of $1 q with no problem..I think the cashier knows that I will just break it up into seperate transactions if she says she can’t use them all at once..They know me too well at my Publix :) Happy shopping!

      I just called St. Andrew’s Newsstand to reserve 2 copies of this week’s Charlotte Observer, then logged on and read these posts.

      I still get the State by home delivery, but reserve the CO whenever there are 3-4 inserts expected, to build my coupon stash.

      The coupon for the AJC says it is only valid if you purchase it on Sunday, and I don’t shop on Sundays. I buy mine on Saturday.

      Our local gas stations carry newspapers from the bigger cities. So do our grocery stores. You do indeed pay more for them, but the increased coupon value is amazing!       I live in the Northern VA area (however, I am from SC). My sister is able to just buy the coupon inserts for 2/$1.00! Yeah :-) So, contact the newspaper to determine if this is an option for you. Just a thought.

      What are the best papers to find in Thomasville, Ga? All I have been able to find are the local Times Enterprise and the Tallahassee Democrat. Anything better out there I could really use the help.

      Walgreens sells the Raleigh N&O for $1.49 – grocers will charge $2 plus tax, machines will sell for $2 even. I usually buy from Walgreens. Anyone know if Charlotte is better than Raleigh generally speaking? Maybe I should go to Borders on Sunday mornings for Charlotte paper too!

      Walgreens in some Birmingham areas sells the Sunday papers for $1.50 but out paper is getting smaller and smaller. Wednesday’s grocery ads are in some papers and not others and also that way with the coupons on Sunday.

She just started Albertsons a month or two ago and doesn’t have the link up on her site, but if you add her to your blog reader or subscribe to her posts, you’ll see that she indeed does do it. Though I think her Alberstons ad is based on the published ad for the northwestern states, so you may see some variance.

      I actually find that the smaller Richmond paper has more inserts than the Virginia Pilot. I went to FarmFresh last sunday to get milk and thumbed through the papers. Our Virginia Pilot does not ever have Redplum. I usually get it in the mail on Tuesday. However, the Richmond carries SS and Redplum. I was so happy! Not to mention the Richmond is 10cents cheaper per copy.

      Look for the the Georgia Times-Union. It is basically the Florida Times-Union but printed for south/southeast Georgia. I can find it as far north as the Tifton area.

      I know most of your readers are in the South, so this deal won’t help them. But, the Washington Post is only .99/issue on Sundays when you buy a 6-month subscription. All you have to do is save $1/week in coupons to make it worthwhile!

      I don’t think the Knoxville News Sentinel has more coupons than the Tennessean. I do know there are some variations, but most of the time they’re identical. I get the Tennessean, but my mother gets the Sentinel. If they’ve got coupons I need/want, she just mails them to me!

      This past Sunday, I purchased 3 copies of the Daytona News-Journal from my Publix on Sunday evening. (I need to remember to ask about leftover papers on Monday.) I also have access to the Jax paper, I think it’s the Times-Union as well as the St. Augustine Herald, but I have not purchased either of them yet. I copied the list of coupons from the insert preview list into an excel file & then matched up which coupons I had. I was surprised & disappointed to find that my paper was seriously deficient on many coupons and that there were at least 5 or 6 coupons in my papers that were not on the insert list.

      Only tip I have is DON’T buy from those newspaper boxes where you pay with quarters. Not only do they cost more, but people will pay for one paper & then steal all of the inserts in the box.

      I live in Middle TN and was purchasing the Daily Herald (which never has all the q’s) for $1.25 and the Tennesseean for $1.75 on Sunday. But I found out that you can pick up the Tennesseean at Walgreens for .99 and CVS for 1.00 on Sunday. More inserts for me that way!

      If I understand correctly, some papers will have more and better coupon variety and availability than others. For example, it is not unusual for me to see a good coupon recommended by Jenny on this site, then go to my flyer from that week (RP, SS, etc), and the coupon is not in the flyer anywhere. i think if I were to get a different paper, my RP and/or SS flyer(s) may have more or different coupons.

      For those missing an insert….I bought two papers from CVS missing an insert. All I did was call the newspaper on Monday with the complaint. They actually sent me the two I was missing plus two additional inserts for my inconvenience.

      I’m in the Chattanooga area also, and bought the Knoxville paper before on a trip in June. It did not seem to have a greater selection for the most part than coupon inserts down here. But I’ve been curious about a Nashville or Atlanta paper. So are people saying it is difficult to find those sold anywhere in this area?

      I will say, my solution has been to have my mom in Michigan buy two Sunday papers and mail me the coupons. I found out in April that she had double or triple the amount of coupons I did down here (and she’s not even in a big town) so I’m usually set for what I need. Anything else is usually downloadable on this site.

      If you go to the office of the paper you can purchase a “complete” copy of the paper (with all of the coupons & ads that are possibly available for that week). I’ve done this many times in many cities in the Southeast.

      The AJC cut delivery south of McDonough and north of Kennesaw, so those of us outside of the immediate Atlanta area are no longer able to pickup a copy on Sundays. Also only Atlanta area residents can get a complete Sunday paper home delivered.

      I pull coupon sections from the newspaper recycling bin to get some extras.

      I also live in Middle TN – Kroger sells the Sunday Tennessean all week for $1.00 – On big weeks you will need to get in by Monday or Tuesday, but great way to pick up cheap coupons, but there are people who will take the inserts – probably should check before you buy.

      I think the Walgreen sale at .99 is only good through September

      HELP!!! I am traveling to Birmingham over the Labor Day holiday and wanted to pick up a few local papers there and in Atlanta while on the way home Sunday morning. Can anyone suggest the best papers to get in those two areas that give the most coupons. We will get back in time to also get the state paper here in Columbia, but I never mind getting a few extra coupons.

      I don’t have any tips on getting a bigger paper…but I just wanted to add that in my area (ROanoke, VA) Dollar Tree sells the paper now…for $1!!! AND, they keep the leftover Sunday papers and sell them throughout the week, so if you missed it on sunday, you can always go another day to get one. Not sure if they do this everywhere though.

      I found that I can have the Sunday paper for Columbus, Ohio (The Dispatch) delivered cheaper than if I buy it at the market or newstands.

      Keri #71- I am glad that you had a good outcome. I had the same thing happen, but the newspaper would not replace my lose. They said the store, Walgreens, was at fault. walgreens said it was the newspapers fault. So in the end, I was out 4 papers worth of coupons :(

      Errr.. I sent my husband out to buy 4 papers on Sunday (Greenville News) – no inserts, of course! He was really mad. However, The Walgreens on Augusta Rd in Greenville sells the sunday paper for $.75, each one I get always has different inserts and sale ads. It is frustrating, I wish I could get the Charlotte Paper!

      looks like the AJC is no longer offering the $1 coupon.
      I tried to print them yesterday and noticed they printed with LAST Sunday’s date on them. I went back today to reprint and the option to print coupons is gone.

      and the inserts in different newspapers are definitely not the same. We get the Athens paper and the AJC for coupons only. Athens delivers but AJC won’t. The Athens coupons are very weak in comparison.
