Menu Plans Publix & Kroger

Posted on Oct 09 2009 | By Jenny · Comments

I have a lot of questions about menu planning, I confess that we don’t plan our menu’s off of the weekly ads.  My pantry is a small version of the grocery store so I don’t need to plan based on this weeks sales.  I’m also just not a menu girl.  I’m the person that has to bring extra pairs of clothes on a trip because I might change my mind.

Menu Planning is something that many of you do, so I have enlisted the help of one of my best friends.  She is the ultimate menu planner in my mind.  I’m always talking coupons and she is always sharing whats at home in her crock pot or oven.  (I secretly strive to be her, but I know my limits.)

Without further adeu here is Amy’s Menu Ideas for the week.  Our goal, pick things where the main ingredients are on sale, hopefully you have the staple ingredients from past sale weeks.

This weeks splurge: Gouda Cheese

Beef Ravioli in Basil Cream Sauce
Celentano Ravioli $1.99
Hunt’s Tomatoes with chilies $0.19
Kraft Grated Parmesan $2.50

**or**

Tuscan Pasta with Tomato-Basil Creamtuscan-pasta-sl-1646355-l
Celentano Ravioli - $1.99
Classico Sundried Tomato Alfredo Sauce  - $0.74
Hunt’s Diced Tomatoes $0.19
**for added protein add Chicken Breast

Chicken with Grapes, Couscous and Asparagus
Chicken Breast $1.99 lb
Swanson Broth $0.29
Grapes $1.49 lb
Asparagus $2.49 lb

Mac & Cheddar Cheese with Chicken and Broccoli
Boneless Chicken Breast $1.99 lb (at Kroger)
Ronzoni Elbow Macaroni $0.19
Eat Smart Brocolli Florets $1
Swanson Chicken Broth $0.29
(3) Cabot Cheddar Cheese 8 oz $1.33 or (1) Kroger Cheddar Cheese 24oz $3.99

Beef Burritos & Beef BBQ (2 meals from the same roast)
Sirloin Tip Roast $2.99 lb

*note about cheese - When blocks of cheese are on sale, stock up.  You can shred it yourself, getting more cheese for your money.  Two 8 ounce blocks of cheese = about 4 cups shredded.  I shred it and put it in the freezer.  I have not noticed any textural or taste change doing this.  Freeze up to 3 months.

This brings me to my very prized macaroni and cheese recipe.  This is the best macaroni and cheese I’ve ever made.  Once you’ve tried it you can play around with the cheeses.

Smoked Gouda Macaroni & Cheese
start with this recipe and add:
16oz Bacon Fried and Chopped
Substitute Cheddar Cheese with Gouda
**if you are sticking with Cheddar, substitute the 10oz package for 8oz (it’s impossible to find a 10oz size)

This is not a low calorie recipe and we have it maybe once every 3 months or so.  ENJOY!

Jenny again: I have to say after all the years of just buying the sale items, I never realized that I came home with so much that I could actually make a meal from.

I love these recipe ideas!!! Ever since a Publix's cashier turned me on to this website --it has NEVER ceased to amaze me at ALL the tips, recipes and coupons that are out there. I keep an inventory of all my items and sometimes it is sooo hard for me to come up with new ideas for recipes. I cant wait to look around this recipe site. Thank you Jenny and everyone else for all the great tips!!!
  • KG
How exciting! My friends' only couponing complaints were that it was hard to plan meals! Now they have no excuse! Ha! I also will be glad to get out of the rut of the super-cheap taco kit meals and frozen skillet meals! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
  • Vicki
I love this! I wish someone would do this every week :o)
  • Elizabeth M.
    YAY!!!!
  • Michelle in Martinez
It's so funny that you posted this because I received an email with a recipe for mac and cheese that calls for smoked cheddar (which sounded sooooooooo good), and I have searched everywhere and cannot find any smoked cheddar cheese. Where do you buy yours? Thanks! :)
  • Nikki
Great idea!! Thanks so much for making it so easy for all of us. I am usually pretty good with using up ingredients, but I get stuck in a routine at times. Looking forward to trying some new recipes.
  • i cook from my stockpile and the fresh stuff that's on sale or seasonal at the farmer's market. i love the website allrecipes.com, you can enter ingredients that you have on hand and they will list recipes. free site! i usually decide what's for dinner in the morning, depending on family activities and even the weather (soup on a rainy day, crock pot if family members may be eating at different times due to schedules, etc) right now, we are doing a no spend month so meals may get interesting toward the end!
  • Melissa S.
I love allrecipes.com and didn't even realize they had a feature where you could enter ingredients. Thanks for the tip!
  • ZJ
I wasn't aware of this feature either. I've been using www.KraftFoods.com to input ingredients.
  • tina
Okay I am in TOTAL HEAVEN! I try to do this anyway, but admit last night even though I had food in the house, went thru the drive thru at Wendy's instead! I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS! YOU ROCK! So just to make sure I understand, this is only the items that are on sale at Publix and Kroger for the week right?
  • Jenny
She did pull it mostly from the Publix ad with a few items from Kroger (Chicken mostly).
  • Emily
The gouda mac & cheese sounds wonderful! I am a HUGE addict of the J. Alexander's restaurant dish Not Your Ordinary Mac and Cheese - I've been hoping to try and imitate it. The recipe adding the bacon, etc. sounds pretty close. Yum!!
  • CJ
What a great addition to your site! Great ideas.
  • This is great!! There is also a website I am trying out, www.e-mealz.com, that does menu planning off the current sales at some grocery stores, Publix is included. The recipes are pretty simple. It also includes a shopping list but doesn't incorporate coupon savings so at first glance the list looks expensive. However, I have found I have most of what is on the shopping list from my stockpile. It comes out weekly and is $15 for 3 months. You can also search online for a coupon code that makes it $12 for 3 months, about $1 per week.
  • This is great - I do a combination of both, plan meals around sales and dig into my stockpiles. Since we rarely get takeout and never eat out, I know what I need to stockpile for favorite recipes and for pantry basics for new recipes. Sometimes I wait a month or two to accumulate all the ingredients I need for a dish, then make it.

I have made some dinner entrees that have cost less than $2 for a family of 4 that have been great! But don't do like I did the other night and leave a full pot of food out overnight! I don't know what hurts more - wasting expensive food or wasting food that you worked so hard to save money on!
  • Are these things that are sales right now or this coming week?
  • BeachyMum
A hundred, thousand thank you's to you and your friend!

This is so great! I love to cook and I am somewhere in between what's on sale and what I like to cook. Thank you for adding this feature to this site.
  • ZJ
This is FREAKIN' awesome!!! I planned a meal for guests last Sunday for the 1st time since I've picked up couponing. It made me realize how I've just been grabbing what ever was in the fridge to piece together a meal for my husband and I. On Sunday, I told myself that I would somehow get back into preparing more gourmet meals - just wasn't sure how I was going to keep expenses down. Thanks!!
  • Candace Waterer
