5 questions to ask

Even when you don’t have a chance to do something really special for date night, it’s important to sit down and chat. This week for Frugal Date Friday we’re going to talk about having a weekly check-in.

Having a weekly check-in is an easy way to make sure you and your spouse are on the same page. There are 5 standard questions that are typically used for this check-in. You can talk about things beyond these 5 questions, but the questions are a good place to start. This helps you to both have realistic expectations for the week and solve problems before they can become a bigger issue.

So, how does it work?

To get started, pick a day. For us, it is most convenient on Sunday, but any day will work. You can do this while taking a walk, enjoying a cup of coffee together, or sitting on the couch. Next, you need to come up with a list of questions to ask each week.

The 5 standard questions:

1. How did you feel loved this past week?
2. What does your upcoming week look like?
3. How would you feel most loved & encouraged in the days ahead?
4. How would you best feel pursued this week?
5. How can I pray for you or support you this week?

This check-in is for the two of you, so if you don’t like one of these questions, you can throw it out. Come up with questions that will be more helpful and productive for your unique relationship.

After chatting, you can grab your calender and write down important reminders on it. If you know your spouse has an important meeting on Tuesday, you can write that down and provide extra support for him that day. Knowing what is going on in his or her life gives you special opportunities  to love them well and encourage them.

In my personal experience, I have found this to be time well spent. When you and your spouse are on the same page, you can work together as a team and conquer whatever the week brings.
