Going Nuts? I can help you understand coupon terms and abbreviations

I have been trying to brainstorm how to make coupon insert differences less frustrating.  It is a tough dilemma.  Coupon inserts vary from newspaper to newspaper.  They don’t just vary in coupons offered but also in the value of the coupons.

If this is new to you, then realize that you need to be purchasing the largest newspaper that you have access to.  If you live outside of Atlanta and have been getting a little local paper, you want to switch to grabbing the AJC.  If you are in Charleston, you want to buy the paper out of Columbia etc.

To help us, I would like to get a volunteer or two from each major paper to take the list that I post every week and alter it for your area.  You would make the list on Sunday or Monday after you get your inserts.  I will load them and keep a running database of lists for us.  This will eventually turn into something bigger and better but we will start small.  Because I can’t keep up with all the tiny papers in the Southeast we will keep lists of the major papers.  I’m listing the ones I can think of and if you feel another should be added to the list email me.

This is an example to help you understand:

Columbia SC – The State 5/31

If you are up for being the list maker for your paper email me ( jenny @ southernsavers . com).  I will update this list as the job is taken.  If I don’t email back just know that someone has your paper covered!

    • Kristina from Kennesaw

      Hey Jenny!

FYI: Albany, GA and surrounding areas down there don’t have access to the AJC. My parents live in Albany, and when I visited down there at the end of last year and stayed over the weekend, I just about lost it because I wasn’t able to get an AJC paper on Sunday. My parents were telling me that it was no longer available to that area and why this was so, but I really don’t remember all of the details…I only remember that I wasn’t able to get a paper that week! They were no where to be found down there. I was having coupon withdrawls and couldn’t wait to get back home to Kennesaw!!!

    • Lisa

I would be willing to help with the AJC, but I don’t get the paper until Sunday normally.

    • Terri

I’m an avid reader of your site–I’m south of Houston, Texas.

    • Kris

I’ve heard the AJC has cut back delivery to certain areas in an effort to cut costs.

    • Priscilla

I’m also an avid reader of your site and I live in KY. I buy the Louisville Courier Journel whose coupons vary somewhat from the ones you list. I don’t usually get the paper until Sunday morning though.

    • Brittany

A big paper here in FL is the Tampa Tribune.

    • Your coupons are always right on TAP for Greenville NEws & The Charlotte Observer. I usually purchase the Herald (cross the state line- Rock Hill)

    • Amanda

I read from Hot Springs, AR, but also don’t get the paper until Sunday and it is Monday before I have internet access…is there a way to get the coupons early? I would be happy to help out in this area,if possible.

    • Lynn

Wow, thank you! Just wanted to say great idea! I was disappointed in the difference in coupons last Sunday, so this will be great to look at before buying the paper to see if it’s worth it. Thanks for a great site!

    • M Rose

What about the Spartanburg Herald Journal??

    • Katie

Hi! I have been following your website for several months and have learned so much! I am in Lexington,KY and get the Lexington Herald Leader.

    • Anne

I’m in Little Rock, the Democrat Gazette is pretty close to the list you post.

    • Ashley in FL

I can help out with the Florida Times Union in Jacksonville, FL. I get the paper on Sunday. Are you wanting us to post our specific paper’s coupons prior to Sunday?

Just when you think Southern Savers can’t get any better!!! Thanks so much, Jenny!

    • Learning2CouponFL

This is such a great idea!

I inventory my coupons instead of clipping and sorting them all so I’m hoping these will be in a format that I can copy/paste into my spreadsheet. That would be such a time saver!

I’m pretty sure the inserts for the Lakeland Ledger (FL) are the same as the ones for the St. Petersburg Times, maybe you could put that list under both names?

Another large paper for the Central Florida area is the Orlando Sentinel.

    • Jennifer

I can help with the Greenville (SC) News.

    • MiniMidgMom

I just glance at the upcoming list but don’t make any plans until I see the inserts. I’ve also learned to use this website together with the store flyers for Publix and especially Kroger. It saves me a lot of time finding printables and reminds me about what I might have in my folders of insert coupons.

We also just found out the Pizza Hut coupons in the Tennessean distributed in the Nashville area don’t apply in our county. This was a first for us.

    • Teresa

This may be a very stupid ? but if I live in Charleston how do I purchase the Columbia paper?!?! Thanks in advance for letting me know!

      • Jenny

They sell it at Publix and the other grocery stores. Probably not something to worry about on normal weeks, but on weeks with lots of coupons it might be worth your time to grab the larger paper.

    • Delores

I can do the Raleigh N&O. I assume the coupons are the same no matter where they are delivered — I live in a small town a bit north of Wilmington (don’t ever by the Wilm. Star for coupons — awful!!!) but get the N&O for the coupons.

    • Erica

I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas and subscribe to the Dallas Morning News. Your info is usually right on with what’s going on in our area.

    • Katherine

There is a newspaper in Savannah, but it has HORRIBLE coupons that never match the inserts. I was in Savannah visiting family and bought the Savannah paper thinking the coupons would be at least similiar. Not even a FOURTH of the coupons were in that paper. I called my husband at home and had him buy 2 AJCs for me!

    • jess

is anyone near summerville, sc? do you get the state paper?? if so where in the world do you go? i have checked several places and they dont sell it. i have also checked the papers website and they dont list anywhere near here that sells it. please help me out if you can.

btw jenny this is an awesome idea!!

    • becky

The major paper near me is the Baltimore Sun. It would be great to have the Sun’s coupons listed because I don’t normally get the paper and the store we normally go to (Giant) doesn’t take online coupons. Your list would help me to know if buying a paper would be worth it or not.

    • Another one in NC is Citizen Times out of Asheville. It covers all of WNC.

    • Your coupons are usually the same as here in Charlotte with the Observer. Every now and then there is a small difference. I would be glad to do the Observer, but I don’t get mine until Sunday morning. Let me know if you need help!

    • I’m in Richmond VA and the Richmond Times-Dispatch is a large enough paper to carry the coupons as well.

    • Sam

I live in Destin Florida, and our major newspapers are:
The Northwest Florida Daily News and Pensacola News Journal
I would cover these if you like. Shoot me an email to let me know.

    • Beth

I am in Charlotte too. I would love to help with this. Might help me get a bit more organized too! I also get the small local Concord Tribune, usually the coupons are the same as Charlotte just arranged in different order in the inserts.
      Let me know!

    • Courtney

I’d be happy to help do the Charlotte Observer. I buy mine, don’t have it delivered, not sure if that matters.

    • N

The Washington Post may insert coupons in a few areas but for most of Virginia they don’t. The Richmond Times Dispatch is much better for this.

    • N

The Washington Post may include coupons for a few areas, but for their broader distribution in Virginia…they have zero coupons included. The Richmond Times Dispatch is a much better option for a major VA paper.

    • lynn

the st pete timee i have noticed has better coupons more coupons and the higher value coupoms than the tampa tribune but if you need help or a back up for the st pete paper let me know

    • Jessica Amick

So,I would just type up a list of the coupons in my inserts and send that to you? If so,I can do it for the Tennessean in Nashville.

    • MommaPalm

Thanks so much for your website and all the work that everyone does. I only have one request.
After opening the example, it was a little confusing that the ones NOT included in the insert were red. it seemed like the red ones were sticking out more. and i only have a black and white printer at home, so i wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. you could try a different formatting, like italic are not on the in the insert and underline is bonus?
      Just a suggestion.

    • You don’t have the Huntsville Times in Alabama listed, I can do that for you if you’d like. It’s the largest one I know if in North Alabama, because you can’t get the Birmingham News in every area up here. Just e-mail me if you’re interested.

    • elaine

If you subscribe to a paper from out of town do you get the coupons??THANKS

    • Susan MacDon ald

Ok, to know how far you are covered, I live in Boston, and i read you daily. I don’t shop at any of your grocery stores, but your CVS coverage is one of the best and I love your freebies. Thanks!!

    • Delta

You can add me to the Tennessean as back up if needed.

    • Delta

Just saw you’d be in Nashville in August! Wish I could make it but we have a family reunion in Indiana that day :(. Go figure. Thanks again for this website!

    • Sandra

It would be great, if the Huntsville Times would get covered! You go Kristin;-)

    • Wendy

I live in Western KY and we don’t have delivery service available so we buy ours at the local Walgreens or Books-a-Million or out of newsstands on Sunday mornings. We have access to the Louisville Courier-Journal, the Tennessean, the Chicago Times (usually) and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. If you have enough readers who need the info from the Times or the Post-Dispatch, I would be glad to do them! Thanks so much for all your hard work – it really helps.

    • Carrie

I live in Melbourne, Florida. The Orlando Sentinel is the biggest paper for Central Florida. I also get the Florida Today (specific to my county) and even those coupons vary. I’d be glad to help you with this one. Let me know.

    • Joy

I had noticed the difference in the inserts. This is a fantastic idea and I love it. I live just outside Nashville and get my coupons from the Tennessean, I see that it is already covered but if you need a back up I am willing to help. I have noticed though that my dad coupons differ from mine a bit and he also gets the Tennessean but lives about 1 1/2 hrs from me, maybe just cause he has different stores not sure.

Thanks LOVE the site I have told everyone who will listen about this place, got my neighbor hooked and she just emailed me about the coupon workshop that will be here in my town! I am excited!!

    • I would be happy to do the Richmond Times in VA, also the Roanoke paper (can’t remember name). I do not get them until Monday mornings however, so if someone can do it sooner that is fine.

    • Becka

I’m in Michigan and pick up weekly the Detroit Free Press, the Bay City Times, and the Saginaw News. My local newspaper – the Midland Daily News usually has the least amount of coupons so I don’t bother.

I love your site as well. Even though you are not from my area I follow your site daily and adjust as needed. Today I hit my kroger in Bay City, MI where they Double Coupons up to a $1.00. I had 194.00 in coupon savings and only spendt 54.00. I’ve learned a lot of what I know from your site…I have to admit it was your site that got me coupon shopping eight months ago. I now have a pantry that is well stocked and I share with everyone. I have access to 5 different computers so I get the pleasure of printing many copies when needed.

Thanks again for all that you do…

    • Judy Thornton

I live in Summerville, SC and can only find the local Post and Courier paper. I called the State and was told they don’t deliver or have stands in our area. I also couldn’t find an Atlanta paper. Sure would like to find someone in the Columbia area that would be willing to send me coupon inserts from the State – perhaps a coupon swap?

    • The Tennesseean’s coupons are WEIRD! I buy the Tennesseean in Clarksville because our paper (Leaf Chronicle) never has as good of coupons. But my coupons differ from the Tennesseeans my family gets 45 minutes away- and from the recycle bin I visit, I have pulled totally different coupons, also from Tennesseans.
So that’s 3 different versions I have found within a 45 minute area. *shrug*

    • Mina

I posted a list for The State under one of your preview entries a few weeks ago because it differed so greatly from what was entered in the blog. No one noticed, but my nose isn’t bent out of shape. Has the one that you’ve been posting been your rendition of the Pittsburgh Preview from HCW or Slickdeals? That’s not a put down. There is no sense in doing something from scratch if someone else has already done the groundwork.

Something that I was glad to hear from someone above is that the Greenville paper is a close match to Charlotte’s.

Thank you to all of the volunteers! It takes a considerable amount of time to match and type those lists. The agencies that print them don’t place the q’s alphabetically, and even have the ads in different orders in different papers.

One thing that may help is that each insert has a list along the spine of which papers in the print area it is being distributed in. By covering one paper, multiple papers will be covered if they are. Perhaps when listing which paper the insert comes from, the other papers could also be listed. I’ve noticed that the distribution lists for the SS and RP differ in which papers the same ads go to.

This is a good idea, Jenny.

      • Jenny

I use the list off Slickdeals, but credit that too at the top every week. I move the prices to the front, make it less wordy and take out acronyms that we really don’t need. I’ll also take out coupons that I know we will never get.

    • Andrea M

I am willing to help out. I get the Baltimore Sun delivered, and am revamping my “coupon cutting” to actually type out the coupons from my paper each week so I know EXACTLY what I have. :) If you want to add the Sun, just contact me :)

    • Gina

I live in Southern Claifornia. Read your blog all the time. I love it. Thank you for all the information. You’re awesome!
Anyway, I get two newspapers– The Daily Bulletin (just for Inland Empire) and The Los Angeles Times (reaches more people)

Daily Bulletin has most of the Q’s that the LA times does but not all. LA Times as the Q’s that you list on your site.

I’m more than happy to do this for you. I don’t know how many readers you have in So. California so I’m not sure if it’s worth your time.

    • Netta

The Advocate in Baton Rouge, LA please.

    • I use the Dallas Morning News so if you need help for my area I’d more than willing to help.

    • cavale

i second the Orlando Sentinel and the Tampa Tribune.

    • cavale

also, i’d be willing to do the job on the tampa tribune.

    • Ashley

I also get the Pensacola News Journal and would love if Sam would cover that one for all of us in the area. That is the only paper I can get.

    • Lauren

I live in Sarasota, FL. Don’t know how many fans you have here (I’ve been talking up SS to friends).

I get the Sarasota Herald-Tribune seven days a week (carries SS and RP). I also pick up the Sunday St. Pete Times when I can get ahold of it, since it carries the P&G insert, which the Sara H-T does not. The SmartSource and the RedPlum insert in the two papers also differ. I’d be willing to do a weekly list for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune inserts, but — as someone else mentioned — I don’t get it until Sunday morning. And what happens if I’m away?

Willing to pitch in, if I can be of service.

I will also check out the Tampa Tribune…I don’t regularly buy it. Not sure how the inserts correspond.

    • Janette

If you need anyone to cover the Northwest Florida Daily News, I can. I don’t get the paper until early Sunday morning though… Let me know!! :)

    • I would be willing to cover the Richmond-Times Dispatch. Feel free to e-mail if you don’t have someone else.

    • Stace

We just moved from Hixson, Tennessee (just outside of Chatttanooga)to Savannah, TX (30 minutes north of Dallas), that’s a culture shock within itself. But a church friend from Chattanooga told me about this site and your seminars. She was so excited that it was contageous!

I don’t exactly know where to start; it’s kind of overwhelming, in a blessing sort of way! I don’t have any idea what newspaper to buy and the grocery stores are different; I haven’t found a Food Lion, Bi-Lo, or Publix here, which is where we usually shop. I have seen a Kroger, but we didn’t have them in Chattanooga, so I’m not very familiar with them either. Do you have any seminars in our new area any time soon?

I am also a stay-at-home mom, who homeschools four. I look forward to learning how to be better at making our dollar stretch!! Even if it turns out that this is not usable for my area, I would like to thank you for your servant’s heart and helping all of us to be better stewards with God’s money! What a huge blessing you are!
