I admit I’m not always a fan of AI (artificial intelligence) because I feel like it keeps us from using our brain in situations where we really should. However, I do agree that AI can be very useful in some areas. More recently I used it to save myself some time and research in my homeschool planning.
Since I know there are many homeschool families out there who could also benefit from AI in this way, I am going to share some of the ways in which I used ChatGPT to help me plan out the year. All of this was completed using the free version of ChatGPT.
Please remember that ChatGPT is not a human; it’s artificial intelligence, and therefore, you do need to further check what it tells you.
Ways to Use ChatGPT for Homeschool Planning
SCHEDULING
Maybe you are trying to homeschool only 4 days a week or maybe you need to know how far along you will be in your curriculum before the new year. Or perhaps you would like a sample weekly schedule for the year. Whatever your scheduling needs are, ChatGPT does a pretty good job of providing some options for you.
Here are some of the questions I asked along with some of the answers I received:
Question: Can you create me a yearly homeschool calendar with the following?
180 days of teaching
1st day of school is August 4, 2025
Last day of school is May 29, 2026
3 days off Thanksgiving week
2 weeks off for Christmas
1 week off in mid-February
1 week off in mid-April
ChatGPT Response:
Question: Can you make me a weekly schedule that incorporates the following curriculum?
Christian Light Language Arts
IEW Following Narnia Volume 1
Math with Confidence 5
Science
History
ChatGPT Response: I was literally provided with a table including times, days of the week and subjects as well as the following subject breakdown with suggested activities per day.
Question: Can you make me a plan by topic for teaching 24 weeks of US History with the book Land of Hope by Wilfred M. McClay?
ChatGPT Response: I was provided with a table broken down into chapters and themes to fit a 24-week course along with the below suggestions for supplements.
Question: Can you suggest me a plan for teaching a 3rd grader and a 5th grader two different IEW units during the same time period?
ChatGPT Response: There was a lot of information given to me, including which source texts pair well together. Here is just a brief example of what was provided.
CHOOSING CURRICULUM
If you are looking for new curriculum and wondering what might work well for your children, it’s possible ChatGPT may be able to help! You can ask it to recommend something based on your child’s personality or compare different curriculum options you are looking into.
Question: Can you recommend a good language arts curriculum for a 3rd grader who enjoys reading but is hesitant to write?

The following chart summary was preceded by a bulleted list of each recommended curriculum. This can provide a great start to your curriculum search!
Question: Can you recommend an online homeschool Christian science course in zoology for 5th graders?
ChatGPT Response:
CREATING CURRICULUM
Sometimes we want to step away from purchased curriculum and simply create our own (or rather let ChatGPT do it)! Go ahead and ask for any unit study and be amazed! If you like to quiz your kids on certain subjects for their portfolio, you can ask ChatGPT to create those too!
Question: Can you create a unit study on entomology for a middle schooler?
ChatGPT Response: I literally received brief lesson plans for 4 weeks with the following goals.
Question: Can you create a quiz on kinetic energy for a 7th grader?
Tip: This question is too vague. I still got a quiz, but you should try to be more specific regarding format and number of questions for the best response.
ChatGPT: I received a quiz with a variety of question formats, including multiple choice, short answer, true false and math application.
By now I hope you can see that AI is an absolute gamechanger for homeschool planning. The uses are endless!
