In December, the weather is starting to get cooler and Christmas is right around the corner. If you are trying to save money on produce, the best thing to do is buy what’s in season, especially in the winter.
This may mean learning to eat things like kale, but there are lots of great recipes available online and it can be fun to try out new things. There are also some staples on sale including potatoes, onions, and carrots, though, if you are feeling less adventurous.
While we are seeing many good deals on items for Christmas now, keep in mind that prices will get better the closer we get to Christmas. For example, toys tend to be at their best prices two weeks before Christmas. You can also get Christmas decorations for a fraction of the price if you can wait until right after Christmas and stock up for next year!
Here is a list of what to buy in December if you’re looking to get the most for your money!
If you are looking for a source that constantly updates, check out the National Fruit & Vegetable Retail Report issued by the government every couple of weeks. This report gives the top 10 fruits and vegetables and the national percentage of which fruits and vegetables are in store ads.

All the Thanksgiving festivities are so fun, but sometimes by the time the weekend comes we need something to do but don’t want to expend too much energy. Whether you’re still with extended family and friends or just hunkered down with your immediate family, here are 18 fun family activities for Thanksgiving weekend that are simple, frugal, and will give you a way to continue to connect this holiday season.
18 Fun Family Activities for Thanksgiving Weeken
1. Use construction paper to make handprint turkeys or leaf turkeys, and let kids or adults write what they’re thankful for on them.

2. Decorate fall or Thanksgiving-themed cookies. See my post on how to have a cookie decorating party for my favorite methods!
3. Have each person make their own flavor of mini pies and award a winner!

4. Serve up a DIY hot chocolate bar and let kids add marshmallows, cinnamon, chocolate chips, or whipped cream.
5. Play Thanksgiving Bingo or Thanksgiving Trivia.
6. Have an indoor scavenger hunt with a Thanksgiving theme.

7. Play board games or have a card game tournament.
I love a good cheese ball during holiday gatherings and this easy cheese ball recipe is no exception. It’s easy to put together and is great with crackers, vegetables, or pretzels.
Tip: This is optional, but try toasting your pecans before chopping them up! It makes for a deeper pecan flavor. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment. Spread the pecans in an even layer and bake, stirring once, for 5 to 7 minutes, until fragrant (they can burn easily, so keep an eye on them). Allow to cool before chopping.

Ingredients
- 2 blocks cream cheese (16 oz total), room temperature
- 4 whole chives, finely chopped
- 1 handful parsley, finely chopped
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp vinegar hot sauce (like Tabasco)
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- pinch of salt and black pepper
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheese (not pre-shredded)
- 1 cup shredded white sharp cheese (not pre-shredded)
- 1/2 cup pecans, finely chopped
Directions
- In a mixing bowl using a hand mixer, beat the cream cheese on low until smooth.
- Add in the chives, parsley, Worcestershire, hot sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt and pepper. Mix on low until well combined.
- Add in the shredded cheese and mix on low until everything is well combined.
- Using either greased, clean hands or gloves, form the mixture into a ball and wrap in plastic wrap. Allow to chill in the fridge for about 30 minutes.
- Remove the ball from the plastic wrap. Spread the pecans on a plate and roll the cheese ball until fully coated.
- Wrap in a clean sheet of plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for one hour. Serve with crackers, vegetables, or pretzels.
