This has been a long week.  I thought last week with an unexpected surgery was crazy… this is another example of don’t put things off thinking that next week will be better.  They are all crazy in their own way.

We live in Columbia, SC which happens to look a little different than it did a week ago.  I think no one our area knew what to expect with the rain storm.  Friends that live in low lying areas braced for the worst, but most folks thought they would be just fine.  I also think, like us, most folks were laughing at the meteorologist by Saturday afternoon.  We got maybe 3 inches of rain Friday night and then Saturday it just drizzled.  We had a birthday party for my now 3 year old and went to bed.  Around 11 pm Saturday night the sky opened and didn’t stop pouring till noon Sunday.  Sunday morning we woke to texts and phone calls about church.  I’ve never seen an entire city cancel church.

Now that the sun is shinning we are seeing just what has changed.  For my family we had a small leak in our roof, but nothing to complain about compared to friends that lost everything.  The destruction to roads is another story.  We live about 10 miles north of town, it would have taken us 25 minutes to get to church last week.  Now it takes about an hour.  All of the roads between us and town are washed out or bridges aren’t stable.  There are so many roads like this, that it’s hard to know when they will get to our area.  We will wait patiently and drive a bit farther for a while.

As for shopping this week, that was also a bit tricky.  Most stores were very low on fresh produce, bread, and milk.  We got what we could, but didn’t bother with coupons (it’s okay to have weeks that they just don’t work for you).  We didn’t even get weekly ads in some stores when the ad had started!  I would love to go back and grab some deals, but I doubt that I’ll head back to town this week.  Adding an extra half an hour to a trip really makes you rethink whether it’s important!

We did get one thing this week that was a money saver!  We had a Zaycon pick up this week for a case of Salmon.  Getting 25 lbs of frozen salmon for $6.99 lb is about $3 less a lb than “on sale” in the grocery store lately.  It’s a big up front purchase, but means that we have fish for a few months in the freezer.

How did you do this week?  Leave a link or a comment and help me live vicariously through you this week!!

                  DIY Pottery Barn Roman Shades

                  on 10.9.2015 at 3:50pm
                  0 Comments

                  pottery barn roman shades

If you’ve ever gone shopping for new window treatments, you know how expensive they can be, especially if you have to get them custom made for a window that isn’t a normal size. One of my friends recently wanted to get some new shades for her windows and she really wanted roman shades, something similar to Pottery Barn’s grosgrain ribbon roman shades. The windows in their house, however, are old and an odd size, so the shades from Pottery Barn wouldn’t fit (plus they start at $150 each). To get a similar roman shade custom made was going to be super expensive (one company quoted at $800 for two windows…whoa). So, she started thinking more frugally and made her own!

To create a similar look to the Pottery Barn roman shades for a lot less, head to your local home improvement store (like Lowe’s or Home Depot) and look for vinyl roller shades that can be cut in-store to your specific dimensions. You can buy them for about $15 each, it’s free to have them cut, and they can do it right there in the store while you shop. Grab some ribbon from a craft store and you’ll be on your way to personalized window treatments.

                  pottery barn roman shades

                  Here’s what you’ll need:

-vinyl roller shades cut to your windows’ dimensions
                  -ruler
                  -pencil
                  -ribbon of your choice
                  -scissors
                  -hot glue gun

                  Here’s how to do it:

                  1. Decide what design you’d like your ribbon to be in to make sure you’ll have enough.
                  2. Unroll the vinyl shade on a clean, flat surface in a standard roll so that it rolls under and not over (when the shade is hung, the actual shade will be the closest to the window rather than the roll). This way, the ribbon won’t look clumped up on the roll when the shade is open. Use the ruler and pencil to mark where you’d like the ribbon to be (the ribbon in the picture is 2 inches all the way around from the edge of the shade). This will make it easier and a lot more precise when it’s time to glue the ribbon on.
                  3. Use the hot glue gun to attach the ribbon all the way around the shade. It’s easiest to work in small sections, a few inches at a time, so the ribbon is straight and the glue doesn’t dry before you can work with it. Also, try to hold the vinyl shade and ribbon tight the whole time you’re gluing so your shade looks clean and crisp.
                  4. Allow each section to cool before moving on and continue to glue the ribbon until you reach the top of the shade when the whole thing is unrolled.
                  5. Hang the shade according to the directions on the shade package.

To do two windows, it cost about $35 (including the ribbon and shades). That’s a whole lot better than $800 and I think it’s always pretty fun to work on your own DIY project anyway.
