This week I hit Kroger to grab the current Mega Event deals. It was a fun trip, and we got stocked on a number of things. I went a bit past our normal 6 week stockpile amount on cereal, but stuck to smaller amounts on everything else. Really cereal is something that most of us don’t have to get 6 weeks on if you like the big brands, but for me I want to be set on basic items for a few weeks after #4 gets here (think of it like my way of preparing meals early).
Kroger
Total before sales and coupons: $167.10
Total Spent: $61.85
Total Saved: $105.25 or 63%
This was done in two different visits, mostly because of the annoying 2 printable coupons per like item rule. We have two computers and can legitimately print 4 coupons, but Kroger doesn’t like to be easy. My non-mega event items were: 3 gallons of milk, heavy cream, and fruit. I also grabbed two steaks for us to splurge and have a fun labor day dinner. Some of the milk and cream went to our first attempt at homemade ice cream that was amazing! We have enough to probably make 2 more batches if you want to stop by for an ice cream social.
If you have never shopped a Kroger Mega Event check out a video I did a while back with tips on mega event shopping.

Here’s a fun heads up… starting Wednesday 9/12 Harris Teeter will run Super Doubles again! They will double all coupons $2 or less, with a limit of 20 coupons doubled per day per card.
This is the first of three lists. Everything here is mostly regular priced items matched with any available coupons that might double. Your goal is to use coupons between $1-$2 that normally wouldn’t double.
Check back on Monday or the list of deals in the weekly ad, and then Tuesday afternoon for a list of unadvertised sale items!

When it comes to bringing a new baby into the world, life can get expensive – fast! We’ve already covered how to save on diapers (both disposable and cloth), so now let’s cut the cost of baby food. Whether you choose to buy it jarred or make your own, there are lots of ways to save. Can y’all tell I’m nesting?
Save Money on Baby Food Jars
When purchasing anything, our goal is to combine a manufacturer’s coupon with a sale, and if available stack on a store coupon too. Each week I post a list of the top baby deals and that includes baby food. I went back and looked at the past 3 months of deals (6/4-9/4) to give you an idea of the best prices and brands we’ve seen:
Beech Nut Stage 2, 2.5-4 oz, FREE – 50¢
Gerber, 3.5 oz, FREE – 50¢
Plum Organics, 3.5-4.22 oz, 25¢
Earth’s Best Organic, 4 oz, 29-85¢
Happy Baby, 3.5 oz, 65¢-$1
How much baby food will I need?
The easiest way to overspend on baby food is to stock up too much. It’s important to be realistic and also watch expiration dates. Depending on when you start solids (the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 6 months) you can expect baby to eat baby food for 6 months or less and at most 2-3 jars per day. If you go crazy that could mean 500 jars!
Realistically, not all babies like baby food that long, so collecting a closet full may end with you adding baby food to baked goods or making a large donation. (If it’s free, I guess that’s not such a bad thing).
Just remember our goal of stocking up for 6 weeks and you should be good. At 2 jars per day, that means 84 jars. This will give you a chance to try a variety of fruits and veggies and decide which ones baby likes too. Then you can always buy more at the next sale or switch to table food if baby is ready!
What about the different stages?
This is the most confusing part of jarred baby food, so we are going to make it simple: Just buy Stage 2!
Stage 1 tends to be smaller (2 oz) jars for the same price as Stage 2, which are 3-4 oz. Early on, you can give them half of the bottle and save the rest for another meal (they last in the fridge up to 3 days). Just don’t feed baby from the same jar twice to prevent contamination.
If you are concerned about texture you can always thin them down a little or puree them more for a few weeks until baby adjusts. By the time they get to Stage 3, these are a lot chunkier and most likely they can just switch to smashed up table food at that point!
That covers all my tips on jarred baby food. Do you have any others to share? Stay tuned for next week when we talk about making our own!
It’s a great way to end a week, with a ton of new freebies to fill your weekend. Remember that most of these will take 4-6 weeks to arrive.
