A lot of people are spending the spring and early summer at the ball field or waiting for games and practices to be over. And because many parents work, these practices and games are almost always in the evening right at dinner time! It can be convenient to grab some takeout on the way home, but that can quickly add up. Here are 10 easy on the go dinner ideas that are simple to pack and that you can eat while you’re AT the ball field!

10 Easy On the Go Dinner Ideas (for eating at the ball field)

Pizza bread

Whenever we go on road trips and are going to eat lunch in the car, we pack pizza bread. It’s still really good at room temperature and my kids love it way more than sandwiches!

Walking Tacos

You can keep the ground beef warm in a thermos and just bring all the other toppings in a cooler. Here’s how to make walking tacos!

roasted chicken salad

Chicken salad and croissants

You can make my chicken salad and get a deal on croissants at the store when they are marked down.

Sandwiches or wraps

This is self-explanatory and probably the most traditional on the go dinner. But you can make it more exciting but making a big sub and cutting it up or even cutting the sandwiches into fun shapes.

On the go charcuterie

I call this “snack dinner” to my kids, but it’s essentially just taking what you’d put on a charcuterie/snack board or what comes in a lunchable. I’ve got instructions for DIY pizza lunchables and you can get inspiration from my post on How to Make a Snack Board.

Pinwheels

Pinwheels are kind of like sandwiches, but more fun! Make these ham and cheese tortilla pinwheels for something a little different.

Egg salad

Make my egg salad and put it in lettuce wraps, tortillas, or on a sandwich. Or just eat it plain!

Pasta salad

There are tons of options, but I love my Greek pasta salad because you can easily add chicken (like from a rotisserie chicken) to up the nutritional value and add some protein.

Hot dogs / sausages

Especially as the weather gets warmer, your food will stay warm in the car! You can make these ahead of time and wrap them in foil so they’ll still be warm when you’re ready to eat them.

Soup

If you have thermoses, then you can bring soup! Make my tomato soup and bring some bread and cheese for makeshift grilled cheese sandwiches. Alternatively, you can make the grilled cheese ahead of time and wrap it in foil.

Don’t forget the sides!

Sides don’t have to be complicated. You can easily pack raw veggies with a container of hummus or peanut butter. Take fruit that is easy to eat like grapes or blueberries or even washed apples. You can take one big bag of chips or individual bags.

If you're spending the spring and summer at the ball field, the cost of eating out can add up. Here are 10 easy on the go dinner ideas!
