This is the time of year when your electricity bill can really start to get out of hand. There’s probably no way to cut your bill in half, but there are small things you can do that, when you add them up, could make a noticeable difference in your monthly bill. Here are 10 ways to save on electricity in winter that will only take a few minutes each and could pay off in the long run!
10 Ways to Save on Electricity in Winter

Lower your thermostat by 10 degrees at night — use the programming function to schedule this so you don’t have to think about it. Add an extra blanket to each bed and you won’t even notice.

If you can manage it, decrease the thermostat by a few degrees during the day. This might mean bundling up a bit, but especially if you’re active and moving around, you may not even notice.

Use weather stripping or caulk around windows and doors. If it’s really cold, you can usually feel where cold air is coming in.

Close doors to unused rooms. Have your kids help you with this, especially if they’re at school during the day.

Unplug electronics when not in use. Sometimes televisions and laptops are called “electricity vampires” because they often steal electricity and we don’t even realize it.

Wash clothes in cold water. There really is almost no reason to ever use hot water in your washing machine, and doing it in winter just makes your utility bill higher.

Turn off the heated dry on your dishwasher. Open the dishwasher to let things dry or just grab a hand towel and do it that way.

Take shorter showers. You can also not turn the temperature on quite as high.

Set your water heater to 120 degrees if it’s not already that low. This is hot enough to work for showers and washing dishes but not too hot to scald anyone.

Use an electric blanket in the evenings if it’s feeling nippy inside. This uses much less electricity than cranking your thermostat up.
