We all have weeks that have little time for cutting coupons, and this was one of those weeks for me. Only July 4th we had a number of folks out for dinner and fireworks (legal here in SC). Time got very away from me thanks to a new neice, and a messy house so super last minute I ran to the store to get this weeks deals and a few other “have to have” items.
If you’ve ever listened in on our Monday night Q&A or attended a workshop, you know our goal in saving at the grocery store is to NOT have to have anything. We want to shop based on whats on sale, not off of what we need. Items we need cost a lot of money, typically never being on sale the week you need them.
Thankfully the things I needed were for a cookout, and that was the entire weekly ad at Publix over the weekend! We grabbed 20 ears of corn on the cob at 20¢ each ($4 total) plus a few other things like paper plates, cups etc. I also got any of the sale items we will use.
While I didn’t use any manufacturer coupons except those I found in the store on select products, I did have a competitor $5 off coupon that Bi-Lo mailed recently. Despite the lack of coupons, we still ended up saving half!
Publix Savings:
Total Purchase Value: $152.71
Total Spent: $72.44
Total Saved: $80.27 or 52.5%
This included a whole Pork shoulder that was over $35! I was kicking myself for not thinking about a few weeks ago when they were on sale for less per lb, but we were serving BBQ and needed meat. While that is a high price for a hunk of meat, it was so much that we served 25 people and still put some up in the freezer.
We had folks bring a side or dessert, so our total cost for a July 4th party came to about $45 including the paper goods, corn on the cob and a potato salad we also made. Thats right at $1.80 per person so not too bad. We have a different budget for hospitality (apart from my normal grocery budget) and haven’t had folks over in a while so it was good to enjoy sweet fellowship.
