Two years ago yesterday, Southern Savers was born.  I never really had a plan or even imagined where this would go.  It was just a hobby.  Today we have over 40,000 facebook fans and see over 1,000,000 hits each week.  That’s just mind boggling.  I’m so glad that the site helps so many people save money, and it’s been awesome and encouraging learning your stories.

To celebrate, we are hosting four days of 24 hour giveaways (today, Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday).

I have decided to take a break from just giving away grocery shopping money and giveaway some fun events that you can enjoy by yourself or with friends and family.  You will want to pay attention to all the giveaways because the final giveaway is going to give you a chance to get away and do some relaxing!

For the first day, enjoy a night out browsing books and great coffee.  Think of it as your personal quiet time.

5 Readers will win: istock_000007015213xsmall

I LOVE your site. My favorite book is My Sister’s Keeper…but I actually read it before she received fame for her book and movie. I have a sister who is a cancer survivor…and I actually wrote a book called, “My sister’s Keeper” about 10 years ago, before hers came out. The author is Jodi Picoult. What a cool thing that you are giving away gift cards to the bookstore!
Also, Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers is a must read for all women.

      Thanks so much,
      Heather Reid

    • Anna

    • Heidi S

Wow to narrow a book down for me …. to just one would simply be all but impossible, words are simply the windows to the world…..so I will drop in a few of my favorites – The Bible – inspired word of God; Southern Savers.com (savings and comments) Simple Abundance(or anything written by) Sarah Ban Breathnach; The Prodigal God (or anything written by) Timothy J Keller; Angels & Demons (or anything written by) Dan Brown; thought provoking essays, works and poetry by writers such as Thoreau and Poe and the list goes on…

On a final note – your website has been a lifesaver for our family. My husband was laid off (from a job of 14 years) a year ago and we exhausted many of our resources until he obtained a new position (lesser pay than before) with a ‘stable company’ – unfortunately 6 weeks ago – they opted to downsize, which for him meant last one in first one out. I am breast cancer survivor and I literally work for insurance for our family as a receptionist. We have one small child – my income hardly supports our family & his unemployment check is very small, we do not qualify for federal programs as our income is less than $100 above the national poverty levels (we are one of the many donut hole people). So your site is truely helping our family maintain food on the table and a roof over our heads.

Thank you so very much for all of the legwork you do for us, in helping us survive this financial economic crises….

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. This book is a few years old yet so poignant. I still recall the 12 year old soldier boy. There are so many great books out there. I would say though if I am recommending anything to anyone to read it would have to be the bible. It is full of amazing stories, from every Genre. If you haven't read the bible, or have and didn't understand it. Start somewhere like Romans, John. Sometimes it can be confusing there are so many other resources that can help you understand.
There are other books that spark my intrest, anything by Beth Moore or John Eldridge, and I really enjoy F. Rivers. Another of my fav's is Twilight… I was so anti Twilight and then I got hooked.

If you are looking for a deeper read try Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay and I just started The Shack which seems good. If you like murder/mystery novels, all of George Shuman's books are good: 18 Seconds, The Last Breath, etc. Ahhhh I could go on (mind you I read all of these in the last 2 months alone!). Hollywood hacienda… an upscale New York Gallery… a downtown
      dumpster… a Texas ranch.

      unexpected, life-changing love.”

God's In Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson. I live and grew up in Alabama. But at 24 I decided to head out to Michigan. While there I found this book and decided to read it. It was amazing to me that the writer could capture old southern ways in such a unique manner and stay true to real Alabama culture (even parts of history people don't like to talk about) It's an amazing story and once of the reasons I came back home after the snow melted. I must say by page 3 I was laughing so hard I could barely read the book and it kept my attention until the very last page.

I love children's literature (as a mother and former teacher) so some of my favorite there are: the series of books starting with “Click, Clack, Moo, Cows that Type,” anything by Dr. Seuss, “The Giver,” “Diary of a Worm,” and that only names a few. I also like books like “The Notebook” and “Susan's Diary for Nicholas.” Currently I'm reading “The Silent Gift” by Michael Landon Jr., which has been a fabulous book so far!

I am a homeschooling mom of 3 boys. I try to pre-read books to make sure they are acceptable before letting them read it. I have just finished “The Mistmantle Chronicles” series by M.I. McAllister. They are fabulous! Every chapter is exciting, pulling you into the story and urging you to find out what happens next. I found several correllations between their god (called “the Heart”) and Christianity.

    • Hmcgee1213

Something Borrowed Something Blue ….love that book!

    • nc_sunshine

I almost never read — it's so pathetic. I read utterly slowly, which is very frustrating, especially with a speed-reader for a husband!! However, my sister-in-law recently lent me “House Rules” by Jodi Picoult. I looked forward each night before bed to get to read another 10-50 pgs (I sometimes set out to only read 10 pgs and ended up not being able to turn out the lights!). It's an excellent read. I also love True Crime and (fiction) crime thrillers, as well as the occasional character drama (like Joy Luck Club).

    • L.

Dee Henderson is a great Christian fiction author who has a series of books about 7 siblings who adopted each other at an orphanage. Happy Birthday, Southern Savers!! My comment is actually a suggestion and that is to form a book club in your neighborhood. I did this 4 years ago, and we're still going strong, For this month's book, we all decided to read a different book, but by the same author (Diane Mott Davidson). This author's books always contain recipes, so each of us will bring a dish made from the recipe in our respective books to the book group.

    • Happy Birthday, Southern Savers, and thank you, Jenny, for all your hard work helping us all save money!! I love to read (although to save money, I get my books from the library!) and have a huge list of authors that I love and have read everything they have written. I think my current favorite, though, would have to be Harlen Coben. His Myron Bolitar series is incredibly entertaining!

    • Tina

    • Everyone needs to read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins!! SO good!

    • Heather

I am a Twilight Mom. Anyone who thinks this is lame and wouldn't give those books the time of day should really give them a try. I hated to read until these books and ever since I finished the Saga (I finished all 4 books in 6 days)I have not been able to stop reading everything I can get my hands on. After the kids go to bed, I read every night and I have the Saga to thank for that. If you're basing your opinion on the movies on whether or not you want to read the books, please don't. The movies (especially Twilight) were a HORRIBLE representation of the books and were laughable. Anyway, if you were on the brink of reading them and don't mind a little teen angst, then I highly receommend them!!!

I am currently reading HUMILITY True Greatness by C.J. Mahaney. It is full of Biblical truth regarding all areas of my life. Today I read, “…when you examine your words you'll discover your heart. Sinclair Ferguson writes that our use of the tongue “is the hinge on which the door into our souls swings open in order to reveal our spirit.”” Ouch! Truth hurts. I'm so thankful for God's grace.

One book I've been wanting to read is World Without End, but can't get myself to pay full price or find the time. So, if i win, i can justify paying the full price and finally read! p.s. it would be great to buy a workbook for my daughter to work on during summer break!

Tides of Truth series by Robert Whitlow: setting in Savannah & Tami’s hometown Powell Station. Book I : Deeper Water, Book II: Higher Hope, Book III: Greater Love. from Book II… There’s truth greater than your fears and worries, one of those truths is higher hope…It’s hope that can’t be destroyed by what happens on earth. Circumstances of life will challenge it, voices will deny it, but its walls can’t be breached unless we open the gate. It’s one of the three things that endure…. Faith, hope, and love. And you have to see it as a fortress, not a feeling; a place of security in heaven where the devil’s arrows can’t reach. The enemy has his strongholds. But God has prepared greater ones for his children. There’s where your mind has to dwell. (I love all of R Whilow's books!)

My Favorite book is Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. It is an amazing story which takes the concept of the Book of Hosea from the BIble and tells a beautiful story of the power of love and redemption. I actually buy this book any time I see it at a used book store because I always end up giving it away to someone else. I highly recommend reading it.

I spend much of my reading time trying to peruse and approve fantasy and sci-fi books for my four teen and pre-teen boys (so many of those genre are full of trash). However, my personal favorite fiction book is Teh Valley of Decision by Marcia Davenport. It's a good old-fashioned epic about a family living in my home-neck of the woods, Pittsburgh, during the beginnings and rise of the steel empires.

Okay I am a fan of non-fiction & autobiographies! For any history lovers I must recommend the following books:

I am currently reading No Surrender: My Thirty Year War by Hiroo Onoda, which tells the tale of the Japanese soldier that refused to surrender for 30 years while hiding on Lubang Island (Got it for $1.00 at the public library!).

Spider Eaters by Rae Yang about a girl growing up during the Great Leap Forward and Red Guard phase in China.
Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell is a fascinating account of an Afghanistan War vet.

      I could go on, but won't! :)

Happy Birthday SOUTHERN SAVERS!! Your site has truly been a blessing to our family…we’ve really been able to stretch our dollars and it’s been fun to share shopping strategies with friends and family. One of the first things I say is, “you’ve got to go to southernsavers.com, don’t try to do it all the first week–go slowly it can be overwhelming, but oh, so worthwhile!

Now, for the limited number of books I have time to read…my recommendations are “Circle of Quiet” by M. L’Engle for introspection, southern writer Bailey White for laughter, and my kids writings for helping me feel good about being a parent.

    • Katherine

The most recent book that I read was The Help. I honestly only picked it up because I had this idea that I would read off of the Best Sellers this summer and I was going to start with this book. I could not put this book down once I started reading. While the book is not a true story, you can not help but realize alot of the book probably did actually happen to someone. I highly recommend this book! It was a great beach read :)

    • Barbara

I love Nicholas Sparks books. They are so poignant while revealing various aspects of true love! Drinking a Starbucks while reading Nicholas Sparks would be priceless!

    • Debnjody

Just received a book that I pre-ordered in March that I have been waiting for years for. It's the last book in a series…The Unicorn Chronicles. I haven't start to read it yet because I decided that to really get the most out of it I needed to reread the other three books. I'm a little over half way through the third book and all I want to do is sit and read! They are a tween series so if you have kids in that age group (or you enjoy an easy read yourself) I highly recommend the whole series.

    • Emily

lately I haven't had time to read…. with the kids and work I am exhausted by the time I have a free moment and just want to sleep. But I am still into cook books. • Shirley

My favorite is Watership Down. It is a classic by British author Richard Adams. The book is about rabbits, yes, rabbits, set in their natural environment but given personalities, culture, language and mythology of their own. The book highlights a group of rabbits, their stories and struggles as they escape the destruction of their warren to seek a place in which to establish a new home, encountering perils and temptations along the way. I read this in middle school and have been in love with it since. Cheers

    • Rita Farver

My favorite book is a child's book called “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” It is a true lesson of life. If you give someone something they will probably want something else.
