The holiday season is magical but to be honest the big meals can be absolute chaos. Between events, travel, cleaning, and last-minute errands, the pressure to produce a fabulous meal can drain the joy out of your day.
That’s where make ahead dishes come in. If you can prepare the big stuff ahead of time – think casseroles, sides and desserts – the only thing you have to do on the big day is reheat and pull out your fresh ingredients. That clears up your head to relax and have fun!
I tried to pick dishes that not only tolerate being frozen and then reheated, but dishes that actually improve with this method! The textures and flavors meld to create amazing food and YOU get to enjoy your guests!
Why Make Ahead Dishes?
- Less stress on the big day, plus frees up oven and counter space
- Better flavor (the dishes I chose tend to develop deeper taste after freezing)
- Budget better by shopping and cooking in batches when there’s sales
Tips
- Cool completely before freezing to prevent ice crystals
- Use freezer-safe containers and double wrap when using plastic wrap or foil
- Label and date everything; bonus points if you attach reheating instructions to each dish!
- Consider double-batching family dinners as backups or as easy meals before the big day
