Are you a hold out on switching to CFL bulbs? Or just need more?  Right now on Amazon you can get 16 GE Energy Smart Light Bulbs for $14.49 with free shipping if you have Amazon prime or a $25 order.

These are 13 Watt  and will replace any regular 60 Watt bulb.

I can’t pass up CFL light bulbs for 90¢ each!

    I used to use these when they first came out until I read how dangerous they can be (because they contain mercury) if they break. I’d rather not take the chance on one breaking! You can google the dangers of CFLs.

      Wow, I didn’t know these were dangerous. Googled it, now I do. But here is my dilemma: incadescent lights are cheap but inefficient, they have a short life span and produce a lot of heat. Led lights are very expensive ($35 per bulb on average), and are efficient in every way. CFLs are great priced with this deal, they are much more efficent than incadescent ones, do not heat up the house, last longer, etc… but they do contain mercury which is dangerous if the light bulb is broken. So here is my problem – we need to replace 30 or more light bulbs in the house. If I buy LED ones, which are the best, that will cost me about $1000. It will take years for us to save $1000 on the energy bill because of these bulbs. Incadescent bulbs keep burning out on us, and I am tired of replacing them. CFLs look like an only option for now, and I will be very careful to try and not break any, but I will be certain to check out other options out there.

      See my above comment to mommom8. We’ve broken 2 and there was no mercury inside. Nothing spilled out of the bulbs. Maybe the old ones contained mercury? Very easy cleanup because the pieces were bigger.

    Cool deal! We need to replace most of the lights in the new house. I also recently read in a magazine (Popular Mechanics) that we will be REQUIRED to get rid of all incadescent light bulbs in the household by the end 2012. Don’t know if it’s true, but switching to more efficient lights is a good idea anyway

      We aren’t going to be required to get rid of what we have, it’s just that legislation is in place to mandate discontinuation of their production.  2012 will be the end of production of 100 Watts, with lower wattage discontinued in subsequent years (2014 I think).  Incandescent bulbs are absolutely the one thing I can say I am hoarding.  CFL’s give me raging headaches.  I have switched two of my kitchen recessed fixtures to LED’s and the light output is amazing, however, $40 each was not!

        When I bought my house 25 years ago, the kitchen had a fluorescent light fixture. In all this time, I think I have replaced the bulbs once, maybe twice. And the output is great.

    I did an experiment a while back with these bulbs. I have a ceiling fan/with light fixture that needs 4 bulbs. In April 2010, I replaced the bulbs, except I put in 3 CFL bulbs and one incandescent.  The incandescent bulb quit working after about 3 months, the CFL’s are still burning. So, so far they have lasted almost 6 times the length of the regular bulb. This is in a room where, most days, the lights are on all day and much of the night.

      I put one in my outside lamp post when I moved into this house 7 years ago.  The light is on a timer to come on at dusk and stay on for 6 hours.  The original bulb is still going strong!!

    I continue to buy incandescent bulbs at least once a week, yes I’m hording.  I hate the new bulb….have you tried to sit next to one to read?  You have to wait for it to warm up before you can get a decent light. I like to be energy efficient but I have 8 grandchildren running around my house at times.I do NOT want the possibility of breaking a bulb containing mercury and have to spend hours following the directions to get rid of the breakage.  Just my view.

      I bet you haven’t tried one for quite a while; the early ones were not so great.  But there are now 150 watt equivalent  bulbs that are great for reading.  I like how much cooler the bulbs are especially during the air conditioning season.
       
      (I have occasionally gotten a “bad” CFL that has a delay or is dimmer than usual, and I take them back… )

      We’ve broken 2 bulbs at our house and there wasn’t any mercury inside. It was very easy to clean up – easier than an incandescent bulb because the pieces were bigger. I have 3 small children and I’m not worried about mercury because there was none. There’s not a warning on the box about mercury so I don’t think they contain mercury anymore? Maybe the older ones had mercury? Give the new ones a try. I don’t buy incandescents anymore. I love the fact that the CFL lasts soooo long without replacing. I haven’t had to replace one in 2 years.

        LOL you cannot “see” the mercury. It is a vapor that is part of the manufacturing process.

        The bulbs have always and do now contain mercury. There is some debate
        about how harmful it is to have a one-time breakage, etc. Certainly
        chronic exposure is more harmful, but it’s been indicated that the
        mercury never fully leaves the furnishing when there is a breakage, so
        it is present in whatever amount perpetually, just waiting to be stirred
        up.

        You are correct; there are no warnings. The EPA says these bulbs should
        be discarded in glass jars if broken because plastic bags do not stop
        the mercury leaching. For that matter, there are some states that do not
        allow the bulbs in the regular landfill, but most do. The cumulative
        effect of all that mercury in the landfill is a little disturbing. It’s
        most definitely an environmental hazard. Mercury causes some serious
        medical problems.

        I also will not willingly use these bulbs. I rarely use a 100 watt bulb
        but I buy extras each time I buy the incandescent bulbs.

    are these the instant-ons or the ones that have to warm up?  We have the latter in our bedroom and drives us NUTS waiting for them to turn on.  That was before they came out with the instant-ons, which we’ve put in the kitchen.  Much better, but they still dim sometimes. As far as the dangers, I do worry about mercury normally, but I have very rarely broken a light bulb in my life, so I think vs. the price of the LEDs, I’ll stick with the CFLs. When not in the budget, we buy the regular cheap bulbs for other lights and can’t keep up with how often I’m replacing those.

      I only purchased a few CFL’s before I realized how idiotic it was to claim to be helping the environment while filling the environment with pollution (They will ALWAYS break after disposal and leach into atmosphere unless they are taken to a dedicated lightbulb recycling center. I managed to break one while removing it from a light fixture. It literally broke apart merely from me attempting to reach the base to unscrew the lightbulb. I was fortunate I was not cut. Perhaps it was poor manufacturing and the truth is that there are no restrictions on how these bulbs are manufactured.

      To tell how often I replace a particular bulb, I write the date of installation on the silver metallic part with a Sharpie Marker.  These newer bulbs do last longer, but never as long as they say they will.
      A deal certainly makes it sweeter!

    According to what I heard incadescents bulbs will be eventually taken off the market and you will have to swithc to CFL or LED..
     
    If you are on Duke Energy then don’t forget to get your free CFLs from them. We got 12

    My local power company, Duke Energy, will mail a box of CFL’s to all of their subscribers.  Info on their website.  We had been switching over slowly, but now all of our lights are CFL’s and we have plenty left over.

    If you have Sam’s Club the have 8 pack of blubs for a 1.83 for the 60watts. What a deal becasuse I got three packs.
